The thing about the Pharisees… is they were given the Word of God but could not receive it, because they preferred to sit in the seat of Moses. The thing about the modern Pharisees in Christendom today… is they don't know or think that they are Pharisees, and they become greatly offended at a word. Such were the characteristics of the Pharisees when Son of Man was among them.

The thing with the Pharisees is that they like to sit in the seat of Moses. But what does it mean to sit in Moses’ seat? A Pharisee who sits in the seat of Moses is one who studies the words of the book to derive its meaning; judging the very word of God. What the Pharisee fails to understand is that they can’t hear the words of God when they themselves sit in judgement over the word of God, no matter the pretense of prayer; for this too did the Pharisee do openly.

If we have studied the scriptures intently, then we are all Pharisees in one form or fashion.

But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

When you read those words, if you hold yourself as one like Jesus scolding the scribes and Pharisees, then you have not received the word into your heart. Instead you sit in the seat of Moses interpreting the word of God, turning over stones looking for the words that fell by the wayside.

But if when you read those words and your heart is prepared as the fertile soil, then you will receive those words with joy into your heart like they were meant to be received: as the Pharisee and as the hypocrite!

They have not known nor understood:
for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see;
and their hearts, that they cannot understand.
And none considereth in his heart,
neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say,
I have burned part of it in the fire;
yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof;
I have roasted flesh, and eaten it:
and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination?

shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
