We sometimes pass on misinformation without knowing.
Sometimes we tell lies without knowing. Is that a lie?
A lie is deliberately misleading someone else in order to gain something for ourselves. Such as prestige or to influence them to our way of thinking. Exaggeration is like Lieing perhaps?
I can tell you about my childhood in such a way, that might draw pity. If I only focus on the times I suffered. In fact the suffering was only minimal. 95% if the time was joyous.
But is that my interpretation? Has my memory gone? It's impossible to give you a 100% accurate account of my childhood.
Just discovering how others' childhood was much more traumatic than mine, confirms my opinion.

My avatar is a lie. It's not a photo of me. But it's closer to how I feel than my real face. My real face is a smiling mask then? Interesting.

Here's a controversial assertion. We need to lie in order to survive.
Optimism is a form of lying. Saying to yourself "come on. You can do this."..when deep down you know you can't.

"God exists. You know he does. And he loves you to death.!"
Is that a lie?
It's not a fact. But an act of faith.
I tend to look for evidence that faith is based on fact. Look at the beautiful weather this morning.
Someone let me have a great sleep last night. It wasn't through my own efforts.

People like to use the term lie too freely. By definition a lie is knowingly making false statements therefore spreading misinformation unknowingly is not lying.

So Muslims and Buddhists are not telling lies when they talk about their religion?

No, unless they know they are speaking untruths. There's a difference between being mistaken or misunderstanding or being misled. How can you hold someone accountable for something they knew nothing about? Claiming someone is lying is an accusation of intentional wrong-doing.

At one time the general belief was that the earth was flat. Were they lying or were they mistaken?

Thanks for this WIP. People approach me on the street and ask for directions when all my thoughts were somewhere else other than the map of the area. I found myself sending them in the opposite direction to where they should go. This happened to me many times until I stopped helping out in that way. I began to think that these people assumed I purposely lied about knowing where their destinations were and sent them the wrong way.

Satan is the author of deception and lies. Satan can convince us that something is harmless when it's not. Satan can tell us not to stand up for ourselves, when we actually need to stand for truth.
Satan tells us to cave in to desire. Eat that extra cheese cake. Drink that extra beer. Act on that wicked thought.

If it wasn't deliberate it wasn't a lie.

Motivating oneself is not lying. Many times, you surprise yourself that you actually did it, even though you first thought you could not.

Misinformation only leads to untruths unless you check out the facts for yourself so you know what you are speaking about. It also leads to gossip in untruths about another. Learned that lesson a long time ago. Many are indoctrinated in that which they grew up believing until someone else points them in the right direction. (speaking of life in general and also religion). Lies, even what we call a white lie to make another feel good is still a lie as people, especially a child of God, needs to be speaking truth. Not in a way that will hurt another, but by being humble considering another's feelings as you speak truth.

I'm the type that wants to know and hear truth even if it is uncomfortable to hear or comes against what I thought I already knew to be truth. It makes me a better person in my awareness of certain things, but I never take anyone's word for anything until I examine it for myself by examining myself being truthful to myself.

Denial is a lie...a big one. If one is unable to handle/recall the truth, they create an alternate truth in order to function/cope. I did this for decades.
