“Understanding What Really Matters”
By Zach Wood
Philippians 1:9-11 NLT
I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.

I had many mentors throughout the years of my young life take the time to instill great advice and wisdom in me. Whether it was my family, teachers at school, or youth sponsors at church, many took the time to teach me new and important things in life. Their wisdom helped me to understand what really mattered in life. When I would get off-course, they would lovingly nudge me to re-focus where I needed to be.

We all have had people, whom we love and appreciate, take the time to steer us in the right direction. We all need people who will care enough to help us understand what really matters. We need proper instructions so that we don’t go off-course. Understanding what really matters is vital to living a life of purpose. We don’t want to forget what matters and live the wrong way. However, so many of us end up going a direction we shouldn’t. Fortunately, we have loving friends and families who will see what’s happening and speak into our lives when we need it most.

We have so many different situations in life where we need to understand what is important. What should really matter to us? This is a question we truly need to be faced with every single day. We need to understand what really matters.

Paul wanted to make sure that people understood what really mattered. It was to love each other as Christ loved the church. Wow! What would be more important than that? Nothing! Loving one another is what is most important. Jesus Christ gave His life for us so that we could understand what mattered most. As we are celebrating Easter this weekend, we celebrate the greatest love to ever walk this earth. Jesus wanted us to grasp what really matters…Love. He gave us the greatest demonstration and lesson of love. What could be greater?

I need to understand what matters most. Every day, I need to be reminded that the way I love my family and others matters more than anything. They need to see God’s love through me. Jesus giving His life for us and being resurrected is the greatest story of love. Do we really understand what matters most?

May the love of Christ be all that truly matters in our lives as we seek to share His love with the world.

Love is the greatest commandment and love is what God is who gave His greatest gift of love in His Son Christ that all who will believe in Him will share that love in this life and through eternal life.

We can discuss scriptures, memorize scriptures, share scriptures, but if there is no love they are only words on paper.

1Cor.13:1-13
Though I speak with the tongues of men, and of angels, and have not charity, love, I am become as sounding brass, or a twinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge, and though I have faith, so I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing....

Okay, this does not sound right. How is love a "Commandment" isn't love a choice? I challenge the idea that you have to be told or even forced to love another human being, that in the Christian reality the capacity for love is not inherit in us without big brother.

Not sure who you are referencing as big brother, can you elaborate on who this is?

Love is a choice, but yet commanded by God and as it's part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit that dwells in those who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. If we are not walking in love then we are not walking in the Holy Spirit and are none of Christ own.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Matthew 22:34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. 35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Thanks Deb, you know more scripture than me. :thumbsup

You know more scripture than what you think you do sis. We can only gain more knowledge by giving time to read and study. I also learn a lot from others in here that have way more knowledge than I do. That's what this forum is all about is sharing and learning, plus discernment which is important.

Thanks but the only way that I "know" scripture is by looking it up. I don't really have anything memorized except John 3:16. Oh I remember hearing certain scriptures before but for the most part I can't recite them word for word or tell you the verses.

Even I can not remember all the verses I know and have to look up book, chapter and verse. I remember some words of the verse as the Holy Spirit will bring certain words to my mind and then makes me search.

Amen, that is when the Strong's Exhaustive Concordance comes in for me, I remember the verse and I can look a word up in the verse and lead me right to it.
Then again, I have debated a lot, and just about remember at least what book and chapter. Lol

Does the Bible or any religious book for that matter specify the processes that it "Command's" it's believers to perform. Or do these ancient documents just "Command" us to perform a function then leave out the technical specifications.

I really don't think that it's rocket science,.. we're just supposed to love each other and treat each other the way that we want to be treated.

And here I was thinking that you had the world's greatest memory. :lol

Unbiblically what is love? Under what conditions does it operate, and how do we suppose that we know what function of love is the correct function.

If I love you, my cat, my job, my daughter, my sport's team, my chicken dinner which of these love processes do I allow to function in which manner?

First being a Christian is not a religion, but one having a personal relationship with Jesus.

I don't know if you ever read the Bible which is the Christians instruction of faith and obedience to God and His Son Jesus in what He has taught all who will have ears to hear. Exodus 20:1-17 are God's commandments explained in detail. Below is a list of those ten commands given by God for His people.

Mt. Sinai Laws:
You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make idols.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.

Jesus gave us another command in Matthew 22:37-40 that not only should we love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, but to also love your neighbor as you love yourself

Jesus also said in Matthew 5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

We do not perform God's commands but respect and follow them for He first loved us before we loved Him.

Thanks Deb for responding to this since I didn't know how. :)

Nope, I've always had a problem with retaining things of what I learn. That's why I never did well in school. But repetition brings back many scriptures or at least parts of them when you use them over and over again.
