Hi folks, I'm not sure what has happened to Karl. In his absence, I'll post some verses in Leviticus and provide John Gill commentary on them if that's all right.

Leviticus 2:1 "And when any will offer a meat offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon:

Leviticus 2:1
And when any man will offer a meat offering unto the Lord,.... Or, "when a soul", and which Onkelos renders "a man", so called from his more noble part; and, as the Jews say, this word is used because the Minchah, or meat offering here spoken of, was a freewill offering, and was offered up with all the heart and soul; and one that offered in this manner, it was all one as if he offered his soul to the Lord (s): there were some meat offerings which were appointed and fixed at certain times, and were obliged to be offered, as at the daily sacrifice, the consecration of priests, the waving of the sheaf, &c. Exo_29:40 but this was a freewill offering; wherefore it is said, "when any man will offer"; the Hebrew word מנחה, "a meat offering", may be derived from נחה, "to bring" or "offer", and so is a name common to offerings of any sort; or from הניח, to "recreate" and delight, it being of a sweet savour to the Lord, as other offerings were; others derive it from מנח, a root not in use, and in the Chaldee language signifies a gift or present, in which sense this word is used, Gen_32:13.

his offering shall be of fine flour; of flour of wheat, Exo_29:2 for, as the Jews say, there is no fine flour but wheat, and this was for the meat offering, 1Ch_21:23 and this was to be of the finest of the wheat; for all offerings, whether private or public, were to be of the best, and to be brought from those places which were noted for having the best; and the best places for fine flour were Mechmas and Mezonicha, and the next to them were Caphariim, in the valley; and though it might be taken out of any part of the land of Israel and used, yet it chiefly came from hence (t); and according to the Jewish writers (u); the least quantity of fine flour used in a meat offering was the tenth part of an ephah, which was about three pints and a half, and a fifth part of half a pint: Christ was prefigured by the meat offering; his sacrifice came in the room of it, and put an end to it, Psa_40:7 whose flesh is meat indeed, the true meat or bread, in distinction from this typical meat offering, Joh_6:55 the fine flour denotes the choiceness, excellency, and purity of Christ; the dignity of his person, the superiority of him to angels and men, being the chiefest, and chosen out of ten thousand; the purity of his human nature being free from the bran of original corruption, and the spotlessness of his sacrifice: and fine flour of wheat being that of which bread is made, which is the principal part of human sustenance, and what strengthens the heart of man, and nourishes him, and is the means of maintaining and supporting life; it is a fit emblem of Christ, the bread of life, by which the saints are supported in their spiritual life, and strengthened to perform vital acts, and are nourished up unto everlasting life, and who, as the meat offering, is called the bread of God, Lev_21:6 Joh_6:33.

and he shall pour oil upon it; upon all of it, as Jarchi observes, because it was mingled with it, and it was the best oil that was used; and though it might be brought from any part of the land of Israel, which was a land of oil olive, yet the chief place for oil was Tekoah, and the next to it was Ragab beyond Jordan, and from hence it was usually brought (w); and the common quantity was a log, or half a pint, to a tenth deal of fine flour, as Gersom asserts from the wise men, and to which Maimonides (x) agrees; and Gersom on the place observes, that it is proper that some of the oil should be put in the lower part of the vessel, and after that the fine flour should put in it, and then he should pour some of it upon it and mix it: the oil denotes the grace of the Spirit poured out upon Christ without measure, the oil of gladness, with which he was anointed above his fellows, and from whence he has the name of Messiah or Christ, or Anointed; and with which he was anointed to be prophet, priest, and King, and which renders him very desirable and delightful to his people, his name being as ointment poured forth, Psa_45:7.

and put frankincense thereon; on a part of it, as Jarchi's note is; and according to him, the man that brought the meat offering left an handful of frankincense upon it on one side; and the reason of this was, because it was not to be mixed with it as the oil was, and it was not to be taken in the handful with it (z); and the quantity of the frankincense, as Gersom says, was one handful: this denoted the sweet odour and acceptableness of Christ, the meat offering, both to God and to his people: it is an observation of the Jewish writers, that the pouring out of the oil on the fine flour, and mixing it with it, and putting on the frankincense, might be done by a stranger, by any man, by the man that brought the meat offering, but what follows after the bringing of it to the priest were done by him (a).

Hey all, thanks for your patience and prayers, wow, what a week!

Because of this virus I only worked a handful of days in December, I'm certain, because of your prayers, I was able to go back to work Monday, here is what I found.

We had one apartment on the first floor with a water leak that was leaking into three others causing damage, then there was another apartment with a leak in the hot water pipe so they didn't have any hot water, at one of my bosses house there was a broken drain pipe from their three kitchens that had been draining all of the water for eighteen years directly into the ground which caused a gigantic hole of about 15 cubic yards that went under the foundation of the house and swimming pool, first things was to drain the pool, and start filling the hole with melon sized rocks and then shoot concrete over them to build a firm foundation for the house and pool again, plus, I have eight kitchens to remodel the cabinets at the apartments, and start preparing an estimate to remodel a 2500 sq ft rental (that means removing everything except the concrete floors and walls) that needs to be ready to rent by June, whew, welcoming in the New Year, ...I'm busier than a tuba player three bars behind!

While I've been too busy and tired to even turn on the 'puter, let alone post, I have been reading, studying and praying over the Leviticus study, I'll post the next study, go do some chores and come back and answer your comments.

A big THANK YOU to all who have been praying for me, my last post was to Chopper Monday morning, not knowing the storm awaiting me at work, ...he said he would be praying for me and would announce it on the forum, here is some encouragement for you that have been praying for me, since the first day of this virus I felt there was a darkness hanging over me, an oppression, Tuesday morning I woke up and it was gone, there was a spring in my walk and more important I sensed the very close presence of my Lord, during this week I have woke up in the middle of the night and spent time in the Word, the message I was hearing is, you are in My hand, I am close to you, I am your Rock, no weapon formed against you will stand........., thank you my dear brothers and sisters for your prayers, I covet them whole heartedly and thank you for allowing me to be a part of this family.

Lord bless you all and keep you in His Word and Love,

Karl

We are going to study the second of the offerings, the meat offering, as it is called in the King James, but it is actually an offering of meal or grain. We are going to see each one of theses five offerings are an illustration or type of Jesus Christ, as we saw in the BURNT OFFERING it symbolizes His TOTAL DEDICATION, here in the MEAL OFFERING it reveals His ABSOLUTE PERFECTION in His ministry.

Lev 2:1 And when any will offer a meat offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon:

Again we read, when any will offer, this too is a voluntary offering and fine flour is to be used, a flour that has been well sifted to remove all of the lumps and impurities, this reminds us of how Jesus was sifted right after He started His ministry, after His baptism He was driven to the desert to be tempted, …sifted.

Oil was to be poured on it, oil in the Word is a type of the Holy Spirit, and we read the Dove descended on Him after His baptism, showing He was filled with the Holy Spirit to start his ministry.

Next we see frankincense was to be poured on it, incense is symbolic of prayer, which we know Jesus was/is in constant prayer, but what makes this word frankincense even more interesting and precious to us is it comes from a root word that means, the heart, putting it all together we see the ABSOLUTE PERFECTION of our Lord in His ministry of salvation for us, tried and sifted without fault or blemish, He willingly, from the love in His heart for you and me, offered up Himself.

2 And he shall bring it to Aaron's sons the priests: and he shall take thereout his handful of the flour thereof, and of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest shall burn the memorial of it upon the altar, to be an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD:

The person offering the fine flour was to bring it to the priests and they would take a small portion of the flour and oil, but they took all of the frankincense, showing us the totality of His love for us, it was to be burned on the Alter and here we see it again, this offering was a sweet savour unto the LORD.

3 And the remnant of the meat offering shall be Aaron's and his sons': it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire.

What was left was for Aaron and his sons; we are called a Holy priesthood 1 Pet 2:5 and that speaks to me of this verse,

We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle. Heb 13:10

Those of us who have been made priests by Jesus Christ to serve our God, have the right to feed on our Lord, the meal offering by faith, which others do not have the right, it is a thing most holy, which for us speaks of COMMUNION, and it should be held in holy reverence by everyone that partakes, because it is most holy that is why Paul gives us this warning and states the possible results in our lives if we don’t,

Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 1 Co 11:27

The first offering of fine flour was straight from the mill, in its raw, uncooked state, now we will study the four kinds of cooked bread and the three cooking utensils which were used to prepare the offering and their significance.

4 And if thou bring an oblation of a meat offering baked in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, or unleavened wafers anointed with oil.

This offering was baked in an oven, a tannûr in the Hebrew which is similar to a tandoor that is used in Indian cooking, there was to be no leaven in the bread, leaven in the Scripture is always symbolic for or type of sin, leaven causes a putrefying reaction in the flour which makes the bread rise, sin in our lives causes us to puff up, to become prideful, but we know the wages of sin is death, and pride comes before a fall. If it was cakes, kind of like Naan bread today, it was to be fine flour with the frankincense (oil) mixed in, if it was an offering of wafers, or thin cookies as we would say today, then the frankincense was to be poured on top of them.

This speaks of the humanity of Jesus, He was 100% human, and the baked in the oven cake speaks of the heat used to form His character, as a young boy and later as a young man He was obedient to His parents, the thin cookies speaks of the flattening He under went in obedience to His Father during His three and a half years of ministry. Heb 5:8

5 And if thy oblation be a meat offering baken in a pan, it shall be of fine flour unleavened, mingled with oil.
6 Thou shalt part it in pieces, and pour oil thereon: it is a meat offering.

We would call the pan a griddle and the offering would resemble a pancake, again without leaven and oil mixed in, it was to broken apart and not cut.

7 And if thy oblation be a meat offering baken in the fryingpan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil.

The frying pan would be better known to us as a pot filled with hot oil and the flour and oil mixture would be fried in it, …like hush puppies.

Here we see the same type of sacrificial oblation or offering that was presented to God in the story of Cain and Able, …it was a gift to God in recognition of who He is, GOD, …and a material, physical expression of the worshiper’s desire to gain favor and blessing.

In the BURNT OFFERING a life was sacrificed, blood was needed, sin was transferred, atonement was made; the MEAL OFFERING consisted of ingredients taken from the soil, they had to be cultivated, it took time to prepare them which expresses the devotion of the one offering and the desire of their heart to give a gift to God in worship.

The raw flour, Naan bread, thin cookie, pancake and hush puppy all speak of how we are all different, we have different gifts, different characters, and God recognizes that and true worship from our hearts might not manifest itself in the same way, but the elements used will always be the same, …pure and undefiled, …in spirit and truth and it will be a sweet savour unto the LORD.

In the BURNT OFFERING we see the TOTAL DEDICATION of the life of Jesus to His Father, in the MEAL OFFERING we see His ABSOLUTE PERFECTION in His walk and works to His Father.

Tomorrow’s study, Leviticus 2:8-16

Lord bless you all.

I am the bread of life (table of showbread)
I am the light of the world (seven branched lampstand)
His body was the veil that was rent in twain (on the cross) opening the holiest place to man.

The ark of the covenant is the prophetic depiction of the tomb where his body laid three days and three nights with two angels in attendance

In the passover, the blood on the door post and lintel was prophetic of the recycled timbers from the temple remodeling (under Herod)...

The skins used in the tabernacle symbolized the death of the living rather than the stones of the temple that were never alive.

EMPTY_CROSS.jpg

Good input, thanks, yes the objects in the Tabernacle all depict different aspects of Jesus.

The only thing I might add is the blood on the door at Passover,

And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the basin; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. Exo 12:22

the movements suggest a Cross...., starting with the blood in the basin that was by the threshold going up to the lintel and then descending to the right and left just about shoulder height, the form of a Cross, ...Jesus Christ is our Passover Lamb.

Karl,
This is fantastic stuff, loving how you are drawing out all the symbolism and comparisons, it's absolutely beautiful, how can it not be, when it was all in the Lord's design.

Maybe there is nothing here, but does anyone think there is any significance in why the Lord wanted the wings to remain attached? My understanding is, they were to make slits, but to keep the wings attached to the body. Why do you think this was the case? There wasn't much meat there to bbq.

Not to run your study adrift, but I can't help to wonder if there is any significance here to Christ.

Thanks.

No problem Jessie, ahh, but wings are tasty!

One of the requirements of the sacrifice was no bones were to be broken, with the wringing of the head the head is separated from the neck, not cut, just like the bullock, lamb and goat were separated at their joints, the spreading of the wings signifies Christ's outstretched arms of the Cross, ...which are still outstretched today to anyone that can hear and receive the Gospel message.

This thread is temporarily closed for right now. Karl is very sick and needs all our prayers. The virus has returned and Karl can hardly walk even with crutches.

We both fear that the virus is the devil's work to stop Karl from teaching. You all know how hard physically it was for me. For some reason, your prayers for me were sufficient to allow me to teach. So, if someone else would like to teach Deuteronomy, let either Reba or I know. The Bible studies are the responsibility of Reba and me.

I will pick up where Karl stopped in the Matthew thread. I'm going to need your prayers again because when I stopped teaching, I started feeling a lot better. I'm prepared to resume teaching, with your prayers for protection from the devil. A hedge of protection would be nice.
