are Golfers athletes?

What about bowlers?

Baseball?

What is the sport that requires the most athleticism?

I think all of the above are athletes. An athlete is someone who competes in some kind of physical activity.

I think the sport that requires the most athleticism is soccer. After watching the World Cup in 2002, those guys are awesome!

On a local radio station, they debate this all the time. One guy is sure a golfer is not an athlete, the other guy says a golfer is an athlete. The debate was a pretty good one.

Yes, I believe all but golfers are athletes. The sport, in my opinon, that requires the most, is soccer. I play soccer and must train 6 times/week.

I think golfers ARE athletes. Why would they not be? It requires strength, balance, touch, skill, mental acuity, etc. It is probably the only sport played primarily against one's self.

Competitive sports all have the same beginnings. Two men. One says to the other, I'll bet you I can________________ (faster/higher/longer/more) than you can...

Golf: I'll bet you I can hit this here rock in that there gopher hole with fewer hits than you can...

to be competitive in golf requires strength - not necessarily football strength, but strength nonetheless. Tiger Woods is the perhaps the strongest player on the tour and he uses it well. To hit a golf ball accurately out of 8" of grass requires incredible strength

I also believe that the above are athletes

But what I would like to know is.. would I be considered an athlete for playing marbles? hehe

God Bless, Scott :)

I think personally that someone is an athelete plays any type of sport, including golf, bowling, nascar, etc. To me, as long as it takes a certain amount of physical skill to play something than it should be a sport. With golf you're looking at concentration, a certain amount of strength, and a sound mind. Bowling requires patients and good physical skill in the form of coordination.

I'd have to say that out of all the sports I've played... Football, Soccer, Baseball, Basketball...I think Soccer by far is the most demanding. With sports such as football, you can be simply strong and be a good player (not dishing the sport by any means) but it's different with soccer. Just having speed, skills, or brains won't get you anywhere. You have to have a good balance of all three. Not to mention the fact that it's very physical without the pads of many sports. You're definitely going to garner a few knicks and knacks any time you play. It's a rought sport that requires a lot. I think you could probably compare Rugby along the same line as well. Very similar and perhaps just a little more rough with perhaps a little less skill and thinking (although still quite a considerable amount).

That would include programing :)

Strength: To stay up all night punching in strings of code when you know you have to be at work in the morning.

Balance: So you don't fall out of the chair.

Touch: Keyboard.

Skill: Without skill, you are only a copy programmer. You're only ability is to use library scripts and combine them to form some sort of program that works, half the time.

Mental Acuity: You know the code by heart. You are one of the very few who can do whole portions of code without having to look things up. By this definition you are a professional.

/eh...

The farthest I ever got was the app "Hello World". At which point I stood with my arms held high and screamed "TOUCHDOWN!".... And then the huge book proceeded into algorithms and it's been gathering dust ever since.

Golo doesn't require strength.

Do you mean golf? If so, that's ridiculous! Golf requires a lot of strength. It takes strength just to hit the ball as far as you want it to go, and it takes strength AND amazing accuracy to get the ball exactly where you want it to land.

Some people say that true athletes are those who play in a sport that requires skill, strength and endurance. Endurance being the key factor.

Would you disagree with this?
