I was just wondering, what do people think about people naming their sons Jesus? Sure in Mexico it's a very popular name but it is with the Spanish pronunciation of Hey-Seuss or something like that. Also there was this story that reminded me of this kind of thing as well. For the record I actually like the name Messiah and it's not like they're actually calling him the Messiah. :rolleyes

It's crazy how names are interpreted differently between cultures and their religions.

I remember that story. It is insane that you can't call your child Messiah, but you can name them ESPN, Ima Hogg, and other highly inappropriate things. I suppose with names that common sense goes a long way.

Philippians 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

I see nothing blasphemous within the scriptures in naming your child Jesus as that is a an English name just like other names for Jesus like Emmanuel and Joshua. Giving these names to your child just means they are named for Jesus, not that they are Jesus. Like parents who have a son and name him after his father as he is not his father, but carries his name in honor of him.

Why would anyone want to call there child Jesus or Messiah.
Have they no memory of what kids are like with anything odd or strange.
Either they are trying to anoy God or they have unknown desires to control God.

I know the generation before mine would name their kids before birth. My mother's name was Billy Neal. They changed it only to Billie, but not more than that after her birth. She hated Billie and chose Neal in her adult life. They never let her forget she was a disappointment for not being born a boy. That messed her up in so many ways and the trickle-down damage was more like a snowball effect. Yeah names are important. What was that Johnny Cash song???? ..A Boy Named Sue?

You know, people name their kids Mary, Joseph, Daniel, James, etc. too. How is that any different?

That's sad =/ my husband and I had a friend decide she wanted to be a man because her parents were so disappointed she wasn't born a boy.

I also had a teacher with a boy's name picked out. When she was born a girl, they kept the name anyway.

My husband and I pick out one girl name and one boy name before our babies are born. That way we got the name covered. Not sure why others don't do that if they are waiting until baby is born to know the gender.

Simple because kids are familiar with those names are arn't do likely to assume that someone with a strange name is strange.

Strange and different are two entirely different things. There's stranger names then Messiah which I still think is a rather nice name btw. :) Example: Blanket Jackson. :rolleyes

"Christ" is another language (greek) for "messiah" which is Hebrew.

Peter is Greek for rock...Just like Cephas is rock in Hebrew.
But what is unique is that a "Peter" is maternal firstborn in Hebrew. (Paternal firstborn got all the privileges in Jewish culture)

Doesn't matter what you name the kid.
Its who the child is that matters. And giving children unique names almost ensures that the child will grow up to be discriminated against and become nothing later in life.

She shoulda named the kid Benedict Arnold...or Judas...he would have had a better chance in life.

I once joked with someone in my Sunday School class about how if my wife and I had a little girl baby we would name her Jezebel Delilah...in keeping with the "JD" theme of our names.

for some reason she was shocked and appalled but couldn't give us a reason not to. My wife and I just laughed over that one. Dunno if we are ever going to have one. Its still in the realm of possibilities but highly unlikely.

dunno what we would name the tyke. But certainly not anything like this woman did. She is an idiot.

Apparently then so am I because as I said, I actually like the name,....

I understand why people do it. But we, including any offspring we procreate are sinful. It does a disservice to God's name by making it common.

"Thou

Everybody has a right to their opinion but Prince is a name and that doesn't mean that they are a real prince. However that's not the point. You didn't have to call the woman an idiot because there might be people on here like me who actually like the name,.. and I must admit that although I wasn't upset by it, it still sort of hurt to be thought of as an idiot when the person who said that is supposed to be my best friend. :sad

Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain...

That means don't make any of God's names common or of no special value and Don't give God a bad name...

It's one of those things that carries with it the death penalty.

I know that you are smarter than that.

When we think of the name "Messiah"...it means Jesus...the One who died for our sins who is God, the Son.

I like the name "Messiah" as well...Same as Emmanuel. (God with us)

There are a lot of names that are great and unique for your children that would hold special meaning for you and your husband and your child. Justin, Nathan, Maybe one after me...John(Loved by God)....I have had great use out of it...so maybe that one is worn out by now.

But how about Wolfgang?
Maybe "Vale" (an Old English word for a place that people would anchor their ships to in a storm)...we call it something along the lines of a valley today but it isn't exactly the same.

"Throng" is another great name that means a wild and uninhibited party....

Its one thing to like the name...its another thing altogether to saddle your own child with the standard. It would mean that you don't like your child very much. Children are horrible about teasing each other over anything. (They learn it from their parents)
I would want to give my child every opportunity to succeed and not be burdened by my junk. I am sure that you would feel the same.

And what this lady did was indeed saddle her child with automatic discrimination, harassment, embarrassment, teasing and anger. I know that you weren't thinking about those things. And I wasn't calling you an idiot. You know I wouldn't do that. But I was her.

Yeah, I like the name Emmanuel as well. I just don't really consider that name or the name Messiah taking the Lord's name in vain as to me that is saying "Oh my God" or using Jesus' name in anger. However, I might name a future son after you,.. but I prefer Jack which is a nickname of John but it can still be used as a regular name. :) So yeah, I see where you're coming from, but hopefully you see where I'm coming from and I feel a bit better now. :hug

Very funny, Whats funny is, people don't name their kids Jesus, even false messiahs do not call themselves Jesus, its weird, i have talked to a lot of people and none of them have called or known a Jesus other than the one preached. Its really interesting. Apparently Jesus name was not actually Jesus but Yeshua, which translated in english is Joshua. Same name is me, what a privilege.
