A "generation" is actually a rather aproximate amount of time...and the variations were rather wide.
According to Hebrew custom a Generation was the father's age from birth to his age at the time his first son was born.
So in Abraham's era it would be approximately 100 years. And we see God's prediction as to when the Israelites were to leave Egypt right on the money at roughly 490 years...still inside the fourth generation according to Isaac's birth.

For others an approximation of the average male having a male offspring it would be after 40 years of age...men usually couldn't afford the high bride price for a wife until they had worked for several decades. Which is why there were so many widows in the Gospel narratives. It wasn't always this way but was a peculiarity of economics during Jesus' ministry period. Also the tradition caught some merit from the Story of Ruth being a great romantic love story that is equivalent to most little girls notion of princesses and knights in shining armor is today.

So... either way you want to slice it the Temple was destroyed almost 40 years after Jesus'ministry... satisfying the near term to mid term (depending upon how you classify his prediction) prophesy He made.

Thank you for the reply. But, do you have any positive reason to support your position that Matthew 24 speaks of a future generation. Your only explanation for your position that this isn't about the first century is "not all things were fulfilled" which is a negative reason. Do you have anything other than denying these these had happened. An Atheist reading your post would just decide that Jesus gave a failed prophecy because these things didn't happen when Jesus said they would.

Can the destruction of the Temple be repeated?

This generation means generational line of those who follow Christ and endure all things until the end of days and Christ returns.

Matthew, Mark and Luke are three disciples who wrote of the same witness as they testify of what Jesus gave as answers to the three questions the disciples asked Him. When shall these things be? What shall be the sign of they coming and the end of the world? Matthew 24:3

The first thing Jesus proceeds to tell them is that there would never be another physical Temple of God built again and then proceeds to speak of the beginning of sorrows, Matthew 24:4-8, Rev 6:1-17, and not to be deceived nor be troubled for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

Matthew 24:9-26 Jesus tells the disciples of the afflicting trials and tribulations that the abomination of desolation that Daniel spoke of, Daniel Chapter 7, 9, 11; Rev Chapter 13, that they and we who are still alive at this time must endure all the persecutions even to death while preaching the Gospel, Matthew 10:28, even as the Gospel is still being preached during the six seals, seven trumpets and seven vial judgments until Christ returns.

Jerusalem has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times

The Temple in the OT was the sanctuary of God here on earth as God from His heavenly throne (sanctuary) worked through those He chose to be His servants (priest) here on earth. In the NT Jesus spoke of the temple being his body and that he is the chief cornerstone, John 2:19-22. Eph 2:19-22; 1 Peter 2:5. We who are in Christ indwelled with the Holy Spirit are now that temple of God not made of stone built by hand, but built of the foundation of Christ being our cornerstone, 1 Cor 6:19; 2 Cor 6:16. We are of the heavenly sanctuary where Gods seat is from above as we reign with Christ here on earth.

There is no purpose or reason why an actual Temple would have to be built for the veil has been torn from top to bottom, Matthew 27:51, and God is no longer in a Temple of stone built by hands.

Another rebuilt temple is required only if you are a dispensationalist as they take what Daniel said in 9:27 and 12:11 to be a third Temple, but nowhere in these two verses does it speak of a third Temple.

4th.

Solomon, zerubbablel ,and herods, the second temple was destroyed ,herods was still being built when Jesus was crucified, they built the temple part ,courts etc first but added a bigger wall for protection plus, ornate Ness.

Are there no Bible-believing Christians in this forum? Why not? Have they all been banned? Why have I not been banned? I see that in this forum "Full preterism is heresy. Postings will be closely moderated, subject to quick deletions." Believing Jesus when he said his generation is when the events of his sermon would come to pass is not "full preterism". Isn't anyone here going to respond to incredible nonsense, abuse of scripture, and rejection of fact presented by Dianecook, post #12: "1, Can you show me where they had a Jewish state [Judea]?..." The lack of intelligent (and honest) life in this forum is embarrassing.

There is nothing in dianegcook post that had anything to do with full preterism. Could it be possible you lack the intelligence to understand what she posted is truth? Instead of judging others you need to discuss your differences in the unity of love.

I am,close to what tertil is,I,haven't fully, found the early chirch to see ad 70,like the preterust do ,but its not exactly with out support .

I knew that, but what are you speaking about a 4th? Do you mean a 4th temple being built after the second one that Herod the Great was renovating that was destroyed in 70AD?

yup that is what they say.

Who say? It doesn't matter how many temples they want to build as none of them will ever be built on the original Temple mount as the Muslims will never surrender the Dome of the Rock over to Israel, but this is all another topic so back to the topic at hand.

1) "This" is word meaning a thing that is present or near. Compare to the word "that" which used to indicate something already mentioned that is more remote in time.

Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. Luke 20:34-36

  • But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;

”That age” refers to the age to come which is in the future, not the past.

If people still marry and are given in marriage then it is still this age.

This age refers to both past as well as present.

So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place.
Luke 21:31-31

  • when you see these things happening

Jesus said those who “see these things happening” the signs He gave, this generation that sees these happening will not pass away until till all things take place.

It’s clear that “this generation” is a reference to the generation that “sees these things happening”. A future generation that is living at the time of the end of the age, when these things shall happen.

Jesus was teaching His disciples privately in the Olivet Discourse about the end of the age and His coming.

The prophecy from Zechariah 14, specifically indicates these things.

Most preterist’s don’t understand this, mistakenly attributing the events of 70 AD to that time.

The surrounding of Jerusalem by armies refers to the events of Zechariah 14, and not the events of 70AD.

Behold, the day of the LORD is coming,
And your spoil will be divided in your midst.
For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses rifled,

And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
Then the LORD will go forth
And fight against those nations,
As He fights in the day of battle.
And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
Which faces Jerusalem on the east.
And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two,
From east to west,
Making a very large valley;
Half of the mountain shall move toward the north
And half of it toward the south.
Then you shall flee through My mountain valley,
For the mountain valley shall reach to Azal.
Yes, you shall flee
As you fled from the earthquake
In the days of Uzziah king of Judah.
Thus the LORD my God will come,
And all the saints with You.

the context of the day of vengeance ,and also Matthew 24 can't be used to support this .

why?
Jesus mentions to different events and horses ,yeah I read old stories of traveling before car locally a two hour ride to go 25 miles via oxcart to school or even longer days to ftdrum to winter beach .

Jesus mentions standing on,a roof top,to hide ,with modern armies that's less protections .an armed tank cam easily, see you ,a drone could snipe you .

yes but you claim that Matthew is talking about this ,do you, think, that when Christ returns salvatiom will be offered to those outside of isreal who managed to deny jesus then ?if so why does Jesus mention that when He comes back its to judge ?

one reason I'm,amil

Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place."

Jesus meant the generation of his day, the First century, because:

1) "This" is word meaning a thing that is present or near. Compare to the word "that" which used to indicate something already mentioned that is more remote in time.

2) Jesus told his disciples that the Temple would be destroyed. The Disciples asked when it would happen. If Jesus meant a future generation, then he didn't answer the question.

3) Everything Jesus said would happen did happen before his generation passed. The Temple was destroyed and Jesus came in judgement. The word "come" is often used in both the New and Old Testaments as a figure of speech for judgment.

What is your argument that Jesus meant a future generation? Do you have any argument other than claiming that such-and-such hasn't happened yet? Do you deny the Temple was destroyed? Do you deny the meaning of "this" I presented? If Jesus did answer when, then when? Do you deny the Bible uses "come" in other places as a figure of speech for judgment, or that it can't be a figure of speech here? Do you have a positive case, rather than just denial of my three points?
All those things taking place in the 1st century is not a possible answer.

My reasoning would be a 1st century fulfillment of ALL,(more than the temple), those things is not a possible answer. While the generation in which all those things takes place is a possible answer. In other words all those things happen within one generation.

When Christ returns on the last day at the end of the seventh trumpet sounding it will be for final judgement as at that time the door of salvation is closed forever.

We do not enter the Millennial Kingdom here on earth in our natural bodies, but in new glorified bodies, 1 Corinthians 15:51-54. When Christ returns in the air on the last day we are then caught up to meet Him in the air and so shall we ever be with the Lord as He has made us unto our God kings and priests and we shall reign on the earth as we rule with Him over the nations as His enemies have become His footstool in the end of days, John 5:28, 29; 6:40; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18; Rev 5:10; Psalms 110:1-4; Hebrews 10:12, 13.

Matthew 24:29-31; Rev 19:11-21 Jesus descends down from heaven with His army of the host (angels) of heaven as while remaining in the air He sends His angels out to the four corners of the earth to gather His own to Him. He will destroy the beast and false prophet casting them alive into the lake of fire, Rev 19:15, 16. The remnant in Rev 19:21 are the world leaders of every nation on the earth that have followed after the beast that rules their government. The remnant will be slain by the very words Jesus speaks of their damnation as the fowls will be filled with their flesh and at that time Satan will be chained and bound so he can not interfere with the ungodly people that are still alive on earth that become the footstool of Christ. Then the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ and He shall reign for ever and the saints will begin to rule over the nations here on earth, Rev 11:15; 5:10; 20:1-3; Matthew 5:5.

Rev 20:7-10 Those that have rejected Christ that still remain on earth after the beast, false prophet and all the ruling leaders from every nation that followed after the beast are destroyed are those who are the numbering as the sand of the sea. These are the enemy of God that Satan uses to battle against the saints during the battle of Armageddon that are camped upon the breadth of the earth after Satan is released for a season, Psalms 2:7-10; 110; Ezekiel 36; 37; Rev 20:7-9. The saints are camped not only in Jerusalem the beloved city of God, but also throughout the breadth of the earth. It's only the 144,000 generational Jews that believe in Christ that have returned to Jerusalem. After the 1000 years are fulfilled Satan is set loosed for a season and goes out to deceive the nations as he gathers the enemies of Christ to battle against the saints as the numbering of unbelievers is like the sand of the sea. As the enemy surrounds the camp of the saints God sends fire down from heaven and destroys the enemy and Satan is cast into the lake of fire. Zechariah 14:1, 2; Luke 21:20 and Rev 16:16 mentions the battle of Armageddon when Christ and His army of angels return as Christ plants His feet on the mount of Olives for the final battle as Gog and Magog found in Ezekiel Chapter 38 is the battle of Rev 20:7-9.

(IMO 1000 years is a figurative number, not a literal number. It is figurative like the numbering in Deuteronomy 7:9; 1 Chronicles 16:15; Psalms 50:10; 90:4; 105:8 Ecc 6:6; 7:28; Daniel 5:1; 2 Peter 3:8.)

Mat 24:33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
Mat 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

Does anyone think that even though Jesus was talking to His disciples that day during the Olivet discourse, answering those three questions they asked telling them of all things that must come first before His return that the ye and this generation could possibly mean not only in the oral that day, or just their generation, but being everyone throughout all the generations up to the time of His return?

Yes interesting point seeing as Satan created the first city, I believe that rulers of all nations are somehow bound to satan in some way shape or form. There is imminent destruction with regards to the ruling of a nation. However the angels do return to save humanity at the end.
