I think the soul because it raises a person’s consciousness to a new level above time. When living in the present a person doesn’t lament the past or stand on his toes to see the future. This person doesn’t see himself as a miserable sinner to be exploited, but a divine being to be loved.

The soul is similar to a mountain peak that has been hidden in the clouds, but when the sun (or the Son) melts the clouds away, the mountaintop receives the full light of the sun. Love burns away ignorance and illuminates the mind with unity and the presence of God's pure consciousness that gives rise to a mind that is capable of seeing a totally new dimension. On the mountain peak of the soul one can see a new horizon in the clear, upper, rarefied air of pure consciousness where one is able to guide the mind’s activities in a new direction that one has never before known. In this way God gives the spiritual mind new instincts to prepare it to move in a new spiritual consciousness.

"What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole word, and lose his own soul?"â€â€Mark 8:36.

Psalm 35:9 And my soul shall "spin around" in the LORD

Ezekiel 18:4, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die.†Psalm 49:15 promises, “But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave.†And speaking of Jesus’ death, Isaiah 53:10 and 12 says, “He hath poured out his soul unto death; thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin.â€Â

Nephesh, the Old Testament Hebrew word nephesh and New Testament Greek word psuche translated in the Bible as soul

Job 10:1
upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul .

NRSV I loathe my life; I will give free utterance to my complaint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul

Psa 6:4

KJV Return , O LORD >, deliver my soul

Psa 33:20

KJV Our soul waiteth for the LORD : he is our help > and our shield .

NRSV Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and shield.

Psa 124:3,4

KJV Then they had swallowed us up quick , when their wrath was kindled against us: Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul

'soul' in the bible has been quite rightly translated "life".

"what profit a man if he loses his own life (soul, psuche)

The key to find out what "Nephesh" is can be found in

DT 12:23 The "nephesh" (life) is in the blood

Soul in essence means the physical life bound up with the body.

gentle folks,

i think soma here is trying to fuse in together christianity and new age beliefs.

and i won't be surprise if he practiced TM to communicate with the divine (God)

frankly, i don't think it can be done. sooner or later the two will contradict and clash.

new age is too focused onto self while christ teaches unselfishness.

as to soma's inquiry which is more important (religion or the soul), i'll say for better or for worse their lot are fused together

perhaps one should carefully consider also the question... in what manner of belief one soul can be saved?

Soul [OT=Nephesh NT=Psuche] should always be translated soul in my opinion. Life is an exceptable translation but not is not entirely correct.

“You don't have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.†-- C.S. Lewis

The soul is you... you are the soul. You have a body and a spirit but the soul is the real you. Prehaps the soul is equal to conciousness.

When some Christians don't know something, are afraid or confused, they always say it is New Age, TM, the devil or the boogie man. We are talking about the soul, if you don't understand then read, think and be open. The soul walks with God so don't be afraid. How do you get TM from left field? That is a whole other thread, which you could start. This is about soul.

Soul and Religion

I think the soul is more important. I have always viewed religion as the nourishment for the soul and the way to help one's soul find direction on the path to God.

One lives out the souls convictions in the form of religion. Why is religion such a bad word these days? I'm a religious nut, in fact, most of us here are.

Peace,

I think religion is good if it puts God in your heart, but your soul puts your heart in God. Some churches today use religion to mask a political agenda. The soul has no political agenda.

Hi,
According to those scriptures, how could the soul be the 'real you' or consciousness say in the light of DT 12:23 and Lev 17:11? The idea that we are incarnated souls (the real you trapped inside a mortal body) is the product of Greek speculation rather than hebrew thought. Life is exactly what 'soul' means in the bible at its core, and the living individual themselves in the physical sense.

Soma: My question probably got swallowed up in the larger posts. What do you think is the differentiation between the soul and the spirit?

Thanks

Genesis 2:7 "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul" (soul = nephesh in Hebrew).

The soul is life to the body.

"Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit (ruwach - Breath of Life) shall return unto God who gave it" (Ecclesiastes 12:7). When God "taketh away their breath (ruwach), they (men) die, and return to their dust" (Psalm 104:29).

James 2:26, "For as the body without the spirit is dead..."

John 3:6, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."

God is spirit so to walk with God and communicate with God one must walk in his spirit.

The soul that gives life to the body; and spirit to communicate with God.

As I have stated to you before soma, you cannot divorce spirituality from theology and doctrine, not in Christianity anyway. The moment you do, your spirituality becomes next to useless.

Thankyou Soma

We stand on completely different premises and it sounds to me as though you are trying to mix the entities.

To me, since it is the Spirit that gives birth to our spirit then we are dead without it. The soul counts for nothing since it is of the flesh (body).

Regards
