Who is the Antichrist? We hear much talk on YouTube and popular movies that the “Antichrist” is a literal person who is to come in the future. He will deceive the nations and contribute to the destruction of the world. Sound familar? The question is, is this the truth?

Does or will such a man or entity really exist? Is he really coming or is he already here?

The answer will surprise you.

Here is what the Bible really says about the “Antichrist" and it will really surprise you to find out who invented this concept of an literal person called the “antichrist.”

The word “Antichrist” is only found 4 times in all of Scripture. It is not found in the Book of Revelation. It is not the same as the Beast.

1 John 2:18 Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour.

1 John 2:22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son.

1 John 4:3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.

2 John 1:7

For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.

John (an apostle ministering to the Jews) was using the term in a veiled response to apostate Jews who:

1. Denied the Father and the Son. Denying Christ is also denying the Father - they go together (John 8: 19, John 14: 7, John 16: 7)
2. Did not confess Jesus is from God. God the Father SENT the Son (the 2nd Person of the Trinity) into the world, in the flesh.
3. Denied that Jesus was the Messiah come in the flesh. To them, Jesus was just “another guy”. He was not God in the flesh to them.

The antichrist is not a single individual but anyone (apostate Jews and all) who denies the deity of Christ, the oneness of Christ with the Father and deny that Christ is the Messiah & was incarnate/came in the flesh. Muslims are the antichrist; Jews are antichrist, atheists are to, in short, anyone who denies these things is an antichrist according to the Bible This is what the Bible teaches.

It is not to be associated with the Beast exclusively; though he himself was an antichrist as well. (the beast will be discussed at a later date)

This is what the Bible has to say about the real antichrist. It is a "spirit" an "attitude" a "position of belief"; not a literal man who is coming in the future.

Now this position and interpretation of scripture is new. A man named John Darby in 1830 invented this new way of looking at certain scripture verses and with the help of the Scofield Bible later in the early 1900’s, went on to sweep America and the sleeping church with unbiblical hermeneutics.

We (partial preterists) call this Dispensational Theology.

This new and erroneous view has now swept America and has become the dominating theology despite being wrong. Christian Zionists (as we call them) in the USA use these interpretations to justify supporting Israel (wrongly so) among a host of other problems.

What else has this dispensational theology misinterpreted? Much.

I will next show you that the “Mark of the Beast” is NOT what you have been told!

Now you know.

Paloma,

I don't want to take a stand right now on the issue of whether there will be an antichrist in the future, I tend to think there will be. But I do want to support the idea that whether or not there will be such a person, there are now also people who are opposing Christ and are against Him. These are moved by the spirit of the antichrist. One does not exclude the other. This is what I wished to contribute to this question for now.

You are correct in this, but you have not taken it far enough. For anyone who denies that the Spirit of Christ has come to dwell within their heart and within their flesh is of the spirit of antichrist. It is more than just believing in the man of the virgin birth, it is believing in those things that He has promised, and believing in those things that He fulfilled through His death and resurrection. He has sent forth the Holy Spirit to come and dwell within our hearts, and that the Holy Spirit would teach us all things concerning Christ, and would reveal to us the Glory of Christ and His Righteousness.

So anyone who denies that the Spirit of Christ is present with them is of the spirit of antichrist. And it is my opinion and belief that anyone who is waiting upon the physical return of Christ coming in the clouds so that they may see with their own eyes and believe have never accepted the Spirit of Christ into their hearts, and are still guided by the spirit that is in the world, the spirit of antichrist. Now this may come as a shock to many, but I would tell you that the spirit of antichrist is from the Father, And like Micheal the archangel did not bring railing accusation against the devil (Jude), I would not bring railing accusation against the spirit of antichrist either.

This is what the Bible has to say about the real antichrist. It is a "spirit" an "attitude" a "position of belief"; not a literal man who is coming in the future.

1 John 4:4-6
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

John 14:15-19
If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

John 14:25-26
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

We (partial preterists) call this Dispensational Theology.

The position is not new. It's been around from the beginning of the scriptures.

The anti-Christ is first of all, a spirit, as noted by John, as you noted, in 1 John 4:3.

We may also observe that Satan is against God, and that Satan is unseen, as an adverse spiritual entity who also enters peoples hearts to blind them and to steal Gods Words from them. (all the seed parables, especially Mark 4:15 as this pinpoints Satan's entry INTO man's hearts) and this exercise is done largely as "temptation" which everyone is "subject to."

So do the math from there.

There will be "no individual man" in the external senses as "thee anti-Christ." That is a chrisitan fairytale for selling creative fear novels of sensationalism.

The reality is much closer to home for everyone.

Actually, many church fathers spoke of the antichrist as being a person, although it was speculative.
It was Luther and the Reformation that put it on the Roman Catholic Pope.
This followed with the Presbyterians and the Anglicans calling the Roman Catholic Pope the antichrist.

However, the generalized Roman Catholic belief is that the antichrist will be a Jew, possibly from the tribe of Dan, who will claim to be the Messiah and try to fulfill political aspirations as well as rebuild the Temple.

After I posted in this thread on July 22, it came to my mind that the Spirit of Christ that abides in us is stronger and greater than any spirit that opposes Christ. This is of encouragment to me when I consider issues that I have no control over, or when my kins asks me to pray for them, and I fear their request is to big for me to even bring before God in prayer.

The antichrist is not a single individual but anyone (apostate Jews and all) who denies the deity of Christ
How come I have the idea that it's more like people who say that Jesus did not come in the flesh then? Where, O where could I have come up with that idea? I thought it was from an authoritative source? and yet my brother (God-speed to you, by the way) comes to teach it is the denial of the Deity of Christ?

Is it possible that I am confused? Perish the thought. If a first confession of His Deity came from Thomas the Confirmer (I think he would like my title better than Thomas the Doubter) and if He said rightly only after he stuck his fingers into the wound (after seeing the Resurrected Christ WITH HIS OWN EYES) -- the John 20:26-28 confession, "You are my LORD and my GOD...

Then comes my question: Are you absolutely certain that John was wrong when he said, "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God"?!?

Just because John didn't use the actual word "Antichrist" you want to say that the test is the Divinity of Jesus? Really? I mean, are you certain? Because if you are, I'm outta here. No sense trying to convince the unwilling, right?
_______________________________________

But before I depart, what about Jesus talking to Peter? Prior to this discussion even Peter (who had not yet been filled with the Holy Spirit as was promised) was asked, "Who do you say that I am?" And Jesus kept asking almost to the point that Peter was vexed before the elicited response came.

And He continued by questioning them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered and said to Him, "You are the Christ." And He warned them to tell no one about Him. (Mark 8:29 - some uncopyrighted version)

But now you are here saying that not only will we be required to have the full revelation of who Jesus is but that if we don't we are the Anti-Christ or of that ilk? I object. I do object most strenuously. But if you want to ignore my objection? That's okay. Really, it's not up to me to teach you ALL THINGS. That is the job of the Holy Spirit. Not me. But seriously?!?

Let me close by saying that I very much appreciate your efforts and would ask you to consider prayerfully my rebuke before you respond.

O my... This thread will be moved to End times... I sure hope you are up for the battle.. :)
What? Did you see me coming? No need for the rolling pin here, a single whisper from any or any hint that the truth that rings in my heart is not welcome? I'm outta hear. Nobody will correct me twice.

I think we need to be careful of reading scripture in isolation because of a word. Just because 'Antichrist' appears only 4 times in the Bible doesn't mean it is not referenced elsewhere using other words. It's like reading the Old Testament and saying the words "Jesus Christ" don't appear, therefore there is no reference to Jesus in the Old Testament. The exact words of Jesus were:

KJV - Luke 24:44
And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

I need to thoroughly study this area in more detail, so thank you for the post. I just think we need to be mindful of dismissing something because we have focused on the word itself in insolation.

Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. 1 John 2:18

The Antichrist will come, which means he will appear, and be revealed to the public as the Antichrist or false christ, which is to say he will be a counterfeit christ.

The Jews who deny Jesus as Messiah or Christ, are waiting for "their" messiah, whom they claim will come to the Temple, which is why they are planning the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem.

This false messiah is called by several names by Paul...

  • the man of sin
  • the son of perdition
  • the lawless one

1 Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you,
2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come.
3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,
4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God...8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4,8

Daniel calls him the prince who is to come...

26"And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate." Daniel 9:26-27
