Every year once Easter approaches I keep thinking about this question. Obviously it was part of God's plan since Jesus chose His fate on our behalf, but why else? I read somewhere that it was partly because of the fact that they didn't believe that He was the Son of God and He got His power from Satan, and partly because of the fact that the religious leaders didn't want their status threatened,.. but I can never remember the other reasons why. :confused

Don't quote me on this but I think it boils down to their picking and choosing certain scriptures that fit their desires (something many Christian churches do too).
Basically, they expected a Messiah that would establish his Kingdom, destroying their enemies, restoring them to the promised land, etc etc. That was never Jesus' plan though. From the beginning, even back in Genesis, the plan was for God to provide man with a way to be reconciled to him, through the death, burial and resurrection of his son. It starts in the garden with the coats of skin or covering God made for Adam and Eve which required bloodshed. Abraham and Isaac was another picture of this arrangement.

In my other post just now, the verses in Luke show Jesus recounting all this to the disciples because even they didn't quite understand that he had to die, so that we all might have everlasting life.

So I think you're saying that their reason for wanting Him to be crucified is because of the fact they thought He was going to be some kind of genie granting their every wish and fulfilling their every desire?

Yes and no. In some passages in the old testament there are descriptions of a future, coming Kingdom where Christ will reign, so its true, but just not what he came here for the first time. That'll happen when he comes back for the 2nd time.
Some of them stuck around while he performed miracles and fed them, but didn't really get the point of his ministry.

So are you saying that they got impatient then?

Possibly. The others made a good point that the religious leaders didn't like Jesus and he openly rebuked him. That's why they tried to catch him with traps like judging the woman caught in adultery ( poor lady. We're still talking about it)
So I think it was a combination of leaders didn't like him, people we're disappointed that he didn't do what they expected plus a little mob mentality.

bingo religion wanted Jesus killed . Christ knew he had to die . it was prophesier at his birth. by simeon Luke 2 :25 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and [m]rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed— 35 and a sword will pierce even your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” Romans 5; 6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; [d]though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified [e]by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved [f]by His life. 11 And not only this, [g]but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

To the Religious leaders Jesus was very annoying. Jesus did it intentionally because He was upset with them.

The religious leaders were annoyed with Jesus but were more annoyed with the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire kept installing idols at every watering hole, hosted blood sport matches, set up brothels everywhere, taxed every road, and set up theatres.
Some Jews really enjoyed these things. (Except the taxes) Which is why the religious leaders were trying to desperately get the Jews angry with Rome.
So they thought that if they could get Rome to kill a minorly successful Rabbi that the people liked they could turn the tide in people turning their backs on God.

So the religious leaders picked Jesus. They felt certain that he wasn't the Messiah. (Boy howdy did they get that one wrong)

So they held a secret trial (kangaroo court) and got Rome to crucify Jesus. (Which violated their own laws to the extreme)
And it all pretty much backfired. Because Jesus rose from the grave. He was truly the Messiah.

So yeah, sounds like pretty much everybody is saying exactly the same thing. Jealousy was the major motive.
Well the Jews were planning on killing someone by agency of Rome...
They picked Jesus because He was annoying them constantly with his miracles.

Now that's where it gets a bit ironic. You would think if they already knew that He had the power to raise the dead and make blind men see again that they would want to get to know Him personally not want Him crucified.

Yeah...it wasn't like they actually had a reasonable excuse.

Causing a child to stumble (and hurt themselves) is one thing (and that isn't good).
But to cause Rome to crucify the Messiah?
There's no place to escape that one.

Well thinking somebody is crazy or annoying is no excuse to want them dead. Thankfully that doesn't happen anymore today. Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful that Jesus died for me and I love Him very much because He first loved me,.. it doesn't mean that I'm still not upset by it though because I am. :sad It was very unfair that He had to die because He never did anything wrong and lived His life perfectly.

It's our sin that caused Him to come here in the first place...so in a way I killed Jesus.
