I've always wondered if there are actually an legit jobs (sources of income) that can be found on the internet and can be done from home. Everything I've read about is either a gimmick or asks for a start up fee.

Anyone have any knowledge in this area?

The only things I know about are stuff like Mary Kay, Avon, Candelite, Pampered Chef....etc. I have a friend that is making a killing off Mary Kay. She works full time, but is quitting it soon. She's only been in it a few months and is already now a team leader. And she only has to put in a small amount of time. Once she built up clientel (spelling?), they now buy through her catalog or website. Or the call her up and tell he what they want. She's put a lot of dedication into it though. You can't sit back and expect it to sell itself.

I'm checking into selling Discovery Toys. There's a start up fee for the kit though of $149. Same with Mary Kay, Avon, Candelite, etc. As for those work from home things where you make thousands of dollars over the net....those are scams. The thing with startup fees for Mary Kay, Discovery Toys, etc is that if you decide to quit, the products are yours to keep. Whereas those website things usually have the startup fee for "training materials"....not something that could really be used.

Not the same, but when I was a kid I could make $50 mowing a yard, and I was really pretty awful at it (now I get upset if one blade is out of place in my own yard LOL). I had three neighbors' yards that I mowed about once a week, made a nice killing my 8-10th grades. One of them didn't take 30 minutes to do, one took about 3 hours. Then in 11th grade I got a retail job making $4 an hour waiting on customers...

Lakesider,

It's amazing what you can make doing odd jobs!

I'm getting ready to quit Bath and Body Works. Kailey starts kindergarten and Courtney (my 3 year old) will be in the preschool program Mon, Wed and Fridays from 8:30am-11:30am. So, I'm going to clean homes! I already have one potential client....my current manager! She'll pay me $60 to do basic cleaning. So, I can drop the kids off at school and be done cleaning in time to pick Courtney up at 11:30.

Right now, I don't even make $60 a week sometimes :-?

I hope to get 2 homes a week. One on Monday and one on Wednesday.

Darkcell,

Lakesider had a great idea! There's a guy in our neighborhood that cuts peoples lawns and they pay him. It takes him about an hour. Can't beat that!

He also gets jobs for pressure washing siding, driveways, etc. He has gotten so many "odd jobs" that he is making a KILLING. He just made $14,000 in less than 2 months building decks on an apartment building. He's not a pro....no business license, etc. He just does good work and people pay him for it.

Another guy in the neighborhood has a pretty good steam cleaner. He printed out flyers and passed them out advertising that he's steam clean their carpets. He's now got some jobs lined up.

Plus, it's all tax free. You just have to make sure the people don't claim it on their taxes. I'm going to start cleaning a couple homes a week while the kids are in school and they won't be writing it on their taxes. If they did, I'd have to get a business license.

A guy in my neighborhood cuts lawns in the summer and plows driveways in the winter (I am a client). His prices are reasonable, but I do not know how much he makes (he has a job working evenings).

As for taxes, according to the IRS website, you need to pay a self-employment tax if your net earnings are more than $400. Also, if a person pays a household employee more than $1300 a year, they are required to withhold social security and medicare (and possibly unemployment tax) on your wages. It does not seem fair. A lot of people do not abide by the IRS's rules, and most do not get caught, but I do not want to be the one that the IRS does track down.

Also, your manager may promise that she will not report what she pays you, but if she happens to see a benefit to her and reports it, you will be left on your own. I do not want to imply she is not trustworthy, or that she would do something like that, but you never know.

Sorry for the doom and gloom, but I would rather have this news than have the IRS banging on my door after the fact.

Well, you might take a look at the Web Hosting Industry. It's quite an active business for the most part if you know how to get into the right places. I work from home myself and we rent our servers out from a big datacenter in Dallas Tx. along with colocation. You could quite easily be a Sales Representative or heck even a Support Rep. and make a fair salary provided you find the right companies. It might be worth a good look if you're knowledgable in computers and internet. Otherwise, I would definitely advise against it if you're not. You can learn of course, but it takes time and I just don't think it would be feasible if you're looking for some fairly quick income.

All the business advice that I've received says, beware. There may be one legit paying job in a hundred, but 99% of them are scams or ripoffs, require a franchise fee or an initial investment in inventory, or offer a year or more of fee-based "training" which may or may not qualify you for a job that may or may not exist. Some still play the old MLM racket of building a downline to pay you a percentage of their take (after which, you pay a percentage of your take to your "management".) There are still Ponzi schemes out there posing as legitimate businesses. If it seems too good to be true, don't even think about it.

But if you must go that route, do your research. Call the BBB. Check Dun & Bradstreet to see that the company is solvent. Search the net for disgruntled former employees. Ask your city business license office about the number of such businesses opening/closing. Write up a prospectus, and ask your bank if they will give you a small business loan to start such a business.

Take the whole deal to the Lord and commit it to Him. If He doesn't want you stewarding His goods in that direction, He should let you know.

And if you decide to start a home-based computer sales & service business, I have a couple of roomfulls of spare parts that I'll sell for $10K.

Did you or do you run a computer business? If so, let me know how it worked out for you.

Our family (both husband and wife) works for the military and are separating soon, due to family constraints and other issues. We have researched work from home businesses for a little over a year now and have come across a great Christian network marketing business that we both felt comfortable with. Yes, we both looked at Amway, quixtar and such. But we just felt a lot more comfortable with investing our time in this program. It is called spread the word ministries and offers tons of Christian media as well as the opportunity to expand your business through other Christian contacts. We have both been in the military a long time but are not able to retire since we are not going to make the 20 year point. Now, we have invested a lot in the stock market, and lost a lot, and some in real estate, and done moderately well, and we felt that for a work at home business this was a great opportunity and investment. Now we don't want to force any one to invest any time or effort in anything. But if you want to work from home and think that this may be something you may be interested in, you can check out our website at http://foodforthesoul.spreadtheword.com Feel free to surf to check out the quality and content, and just in case you are interested, check out the link in the top left of the homepage (or please e-mail us). We hope this helps with any questions that you all may have with working from home opportunities. Best wishes and prayers for the best, The Williams Family (food4yoursoul@hotmail.com)

You can make money by working at web hosting companies. I used to work at one, but today they filed Chatper 7, so not anymore. :crying: :crying: :crying:

I know that this thread is old, but I wanted to have my say!

I have started working from home recently, and have found with a little hard work, there are legite business models out there, and you can make money.

I did 6 months of research, and finally found the right one for me. In my first month I made a couple hundred dollars. Doesn't seem like much, but I only worked for a few hours! Plus the tax breaks I am eligable for now will make a big difference come tax time again.

The best thing about it for me though, is I get to help other people, and it doesn't cost anyone anything. Training is ongoing, and free, and that means alot.

If anyone is looking for a good opportunity, with no money racket, no MLM, no selling or stocking products, let me know, I would love to share it with anyone, and then let God tell you if it is right for you, not anyone else!

My brother got me into cash flow notes acouple of years ago. I still work full time though, why? I have no idea. I work for about an hour a day finding cash flow notes on real estate properties. I find them and contact the Realtor Company I signed with and I get money off the top. My largest cash note was $7,775. And I worked maybe 2 hours to locate and cash in. So far in two years I have made roughly $74,000. I just bought and moved into a new home the week before last. It's 2 story, 4 bedroom, 3 bath, double car garage. I bought it at $182,000. I'll have it paid off less then 10 years. There are many sites on the internet that can help you learn about Cash Flow Notes and how to get involved. There are no sales involved. All you do is find cash notes and turn them into cash. You're helping other people while you do it. No one wants to sit on a cash note. So it's a win win situation. One problem though, depending on where you live there is alot of competition on these cash flow real estate notes. My way around it??? Moble Home Parks. It's a hidden gold mine..

Well, Atonement, it sounds like you were fortunate in finding a good job you could do at home. I wish there was something that's not a rip-off I could do at home that doesn't require a lot of computer knowledge. I was a janitor most of my life, and no one ever called me smart. However, I was smart enough one day to call upon the Lord and claim Him as my Saviour. Anyway, I could sure use a little extra income. My retirement check barely does it here in Florida.

The truth is, you don't need any real estate knowledge, or any higher education. Anyone can do this. As I said there are alot of sites on the internet, just type in cash flow notes on your web browser and click go. I was amazed how easy it is, and how much "little time" I need to put into it. It's not for everyone I'm aware of that. But it's worth at least looking into it. It's not like that "No Money Down" crap you see on TV. There are many risk involved with that. And cost a bundle. With this job you just find the cash notes, call your local Realtor and cash in. 3 simple steps. Do yourself a favor and look into it, it might do you and your family a great deal of freedom from stress. Good Luck

Hey, Keith.

I've been trying to get Notes discussion going for some time now.

I'd be happy to have you share some wisdom at:
http://real-estate-investors-resource.c ... m.php?f=15

I had a section on mobile homes for a while, too. I recently changed hosts and lost a lot of threads and data in the transfer. :sad The forum was much bigger and more active at one time. I'm hoping folks will find it again and start contributing.

I'd be happy to start another section on MH if you feel like sharing.

Hope to see you there, bro! :biggrin
