I was just wondering because Joey and I hated school so much (except for a few things like finding each other) and we're sort of torn whether or not we would let any future children of ours dropout. On one hand we're saying sure go ahead since we both hated it and were forced to go, but on the other hand we're thinking that if we were forced to go through it then they should be too so what do you guys think about it?

I think I could write pages on this - so I will try and keep it short.

The first thing is the age of the child
In the UK it is illegal to leave school until the age of 16. Then until you are 18 you have you have to attend fulltime college, or apprdnticeship or trainee (this covers any type of employment as I know it.)

But the first thing I would want to know is why does my child hate school? Are they being bullied? Is the work too hard for them? Have they some kind of physical reason e.g. hard of hearing, bad Vision etc.
Is it the right school or would they do better at a different or special school? The reason they want to leave is very important.

If one of the parents is a qualified teacher and agreeable to following the curriculum they can be taught at home. But that is depriving them of the contact with other people.

What would they be doing if they left school?

Education is extremely important. Most problems can be sorted. If there is a learning problem take the child away from that school and take them to one that specialises in learning difficulties where they can learn basic things that will help them In life. Look for one that teaches capabilities at the child's standard.

Your laws may be different than ours.

18,they can as an adult withdrawal.they can before that lose driving license.

I would be against it but college is pushed here rather then trades imho.

Actually no, our rules are exactly the same (at least in the state of Ohio) where sixteen is the minimum age. Joey and I just hated school because we were bullied and we were forced to learn things that we had no interest in learning and won't help us in our day to day lives. If they focused on more life skills, how to treat each other as human beings and allow an elective of Christianity for those of us who have absolutely no interest in learning about the theory of being evolved from apes,.. then school would be a lot better imho. I'm not saying that I don't believe that science and Christianity can't go together because I do, but I still don't believe that we evolved from apes when the Bible clearly states that Adam and Eve were the first humans. Don't even get me started on college. :rolleyes

College is pushed here too , but I feel it's unfair to prevent someone of that age from choosing which they want to do. Advice and talking and listening is great but on the end I don't like young people being pushed into a career they don't want.
I am all for education but if they want to be a plumber, carpenter etc I think you should let them do it. College is too advanced for some people. We have a few that specialise for learning difficulties and that gives people an extra 2 years before being thrown into the big bad world.

I think everyone had to learn subjects they don't like. I hated art class because I Can't even draw a banana. I hated biology because they wanted us to cut up dead rats that were soaked in metholised spirit, to show us how their insides were formed. Yak!

As we got older we could drop the ones we didn't like.

If one only took things you liked..shoot I would have stayed home and mastered my martial arts.dad saw too it that I learned.

Life is like that .we must do something we hate but must. I hate asking a business, please pay your bill

I must say that English and science were actually my favorite subjects because even though with the nicer weather and I go outside a lot more during the summer,.. I really like writing stories and I absolutely love to read! :biggrin2 But yes, I still enjoy science even though I'm a Christian, I think that it's neat.

No offense or anything but that's sort of different. People need to pay their bills because people need to make money in order to make a living. How is understanding the revolutionary war, or remembering who all the presidents were necessary in life?

Yes that true. I would let them choose which career they wanted. People are usually good at things they like doing. Even in the career you choose there are bound to be things you don't like doing, but you just have to go ahead and do it.

I loved school and learning My favourites were religion, English, maths and geography.

That's why I gave up history I could never remember all those dozens of dates.

Ugh. I hate math even though I know it's necessary and geography comes in handy when your GPS breaks and you need to know how to use a map. Sadly, I wasn't even given the choice of religion though hence what I wrote of having to learn that evolution stuff even though I don't believe a word of it.

I can never understand why atheists get so upset when we mention Jesus and accuse us of shoving it down their throats when they are doing exactly the same thing with their beliefs. :nonono Too bad we could never drop subjects like you could unless it was an elective.

Fortunately we weren't taught evolution all them. years ago

Why vote if you don't understand the history of why laws are there.

Seriously ,that's very sad.I will die y life will be in some passage of a book ,not noticed by I die knowing I have set courses of men who may change, shape my country.

My love for history has lead me to want to learn about subjects I hated.

Theatre,drama.music

Why do you recall 9 11,that's history, move on ,you were there.100 years from now some teen will say that about that event.

My towns formation has the back drop of these events I can touch, talk to people who there.

The depression, my fil remembers
Ww2,local base,vets who trained here
Jim crow laws, segregation, old blacks still cringe at thoughts of that and struggle lettimg go because of what they went through, some can see and speak up and say it wasn't all whites. These I have met
Older events but none alive .

Ww1,civil war ,indian wars spanish colony era, roaring 20s.photo is a building of that time. The oldest theatre here had no sound, silent films, then was at first a play Wright theatre with orchestra pit .so yes, history shapes us,we shape it.

I can rant about how much local time of history here ought to be taught.

Buy a house here, references to pre colonial america with spanish measurements in the deed.500 years ago!

Good point there April.

When we were 14 at the school I attended we had to drop a few subjects, because they were adding new ones. I dropped French biology and history. You could specialise if you wanted to. If you wanted to do nursing you could start your theory trainng at 16 and stay on for two extra years.

I don't vote so that question doesn't apply to me and you don't need to know history to know 911 is what you call for medical emergencies. Although I will admit, some parts of history actually do interest me, it's just not my favorite subject that's all and I shouldn't have been forced to learn it. Things like the constitution and stuff, that's actually very important to me.

Jason I am very interested in history. We had to remember loads of dates for the exams and I wasn't good at that. They went back hundreds of years. But I still did read up on history at home.
