Christian friends,

I had this article published today in On Line Opinion, "Why I am not a theologically liberal person." I expect a lot of resistance from theological liberals and agnostics/atheists.

Please join the battle with me in apologetics for Jesus. You will need to create your own pen name in On Line Opinion.

I like this dialog about heresy.

The research article on hairesis by Schlier (in Kittel, vol. 1) states that its 'usage in Acts corresponds exactly to that of Josephus and the earlier Rabbis' but the development of the Christian sense of heresy does not parallel this Rabbinic use.

When the NT ekklesia (church) came into being, there was no place for hairesis. They were opposed to each other. This author states that 'the greater seriousness consists in the fact that hairesis affect the foundation of the church in doctrine (2 Pt. 2:1), and that they do so in such a fundamental way as to give rise to a new society alongside the ekklesia'(Schlier).

Surely that is what we see in the Uniting Church today in Australia (UCA) with its support of theological liberalism's unbiblical doctrines and most recently endorsing homosexual marriages conducted by its clergy in its churches?

From the NT, heresy also is used to mean what Paul called strange doctrines, different doctrine, doctrines of demons, every wind of doctrine, etc. (1 Tim 1:3; 4:1; 6:3; Eph 4:14), as contrasted with sound doctrine, our doctrine, the doctrine conforming to godliness, the doctrine of God, etc. (1 Timothy 4:6; 6:1,3; 2 Tim 4:3; Titus 1:9; 2:1, 10).

Therefore, the UCA, in supporting same-sex marriage and the anti-supernaturalism of theological liberalism promotes heresy. This heretical poison will destroy the potential of any church or denomination for growth. According to the Christian Research Association, the UCA lost 31% of its attendance from 1996-2006.

Heresy kills denominations. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, heresy is the "belief or opinion contrary to orthodox religious (especially Christian) doctrine." A second definition is: "Opinion profoundly at odds with what is generally accepted" (Oxford English Dictionary 2021. "heresy.")

However this statement … Heresy kills denominations, seems diametrically opposed to the very definition of heresy.

Heresy is what creates denominations.

A denomination is just another term for sect. It’s a group or division within the body of Christ, based on a different belief or doctrine.

Heresy creates division, the very thing a denomination is.

Who gets to decide what is or is not heresy?

Who gets to decide what is or is not the Christian faith?

The Holy Spirit, as taught in the New Testament.

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. John 16:12-13

Can you demonstrate how the Holy Spirit defined heresy and settled what is or is not the Christian faith throughout history?

For example, when Arianism was rampant in Christendom in the fourth century, when, where and how did the Holy Spirit intercede and condemn it?

You are right in saying that you expect a lot of resistance from theological liberals and agnostics/atheists. First of all, you're joining theological liberals and agnostics/atheists, which is totally wrong. Theological liberals believe in God; agnostics/atheists do not.

I skimmed through your article, which is so biased and error-filled that I stopped reading part way through. Would you be interested in reading my article about theological conservatives having absolutely no idea what they're talking about?

so every Christian should be identical and perfect in the bible understand ,worship styles and no possible cultural influences in your view.

I can assure you black and Hispanic believers are not quiet in worship and whites are .in general this is true . I know black believers who are Anglican and sound Pentecostal ,haitan Methodist who are the same .

there are variations here .liberty in the nonessentials .

Jesus, Paul, and others were considered to be "theological liberals" by the religious conservatives of their time. They didn't agree with the false doctrine of those who claimed to know the truth.

A prime example from Scripture of religious conservatism...

Matthew 12:9-14, "Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus, they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”

He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus."

Where did I say that?

It’s about doctrine. Are we following Christ’s doctrine or man’s?

Please read what the Spirit of Christ through Paul taught us about this subject.

Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 1 Corinthians 1:10

Jason, if you don’t like God’s plan for His Church then take it up with Him.

Amen. The Pharisee’s plotted to kill Jesus Christ, because they didn’t like His doctrine.

Antichrist.

The question is where do you, Jaybo, stand?

Will you submit to and obey His doctrine or will you follow the cultural liberalism that has infected the Church.

Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 2 John 9

Will you follow the spirit of antichrist, or will you choose to love and obey the truth?

  • because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12

Will you submit to and obey His doctrine or will you follow the archaic conservatism that has infected the Church? Will you follow the spirit of antichrist, or will you choose to love and obey the truth? You are equating liberal theology with the spirit of the antichrist, just like the Pharisees. I know the truth that is in Christ. Do you want to join me or stick with your OT judgmental ways?

Do you want to join me or stick with your OT judgmental ways?

Can you please refer to the post in this thread where I quoted Old Testament scriptures in a judgmental way?

I would answer with just one verse...

All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, (2Ti 3:16)

The theological liberal targets God's Word in any way he/she can.

crossnote,

These secularists in "the Comments section" have no regard for the Scriptures as breathed out by God. Scripture tells us how to approach them:

15 but in your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defence to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behaviour in Christ may be put to shame (1 Pet 3:15-16 ESV).

This is an opportunity for us to engage in "defence to anyone who for a reason for the hope" you have. I encourage you to join with me in the ministry of apologetics in On Line Opinion.

This Australian secular e-journal is open to receiving creative (and provocative) content in an article.

JLB,

In NT Greek, the term from which we get “heresy” is hairesis. Arndt & Gingrich’s Greek Lexicon (1957:23) states that hairesis means ‘sect, party, school’. It was used of the Sadduccees in Acts 5:17; of the Pharisees in Acts 15:5. Of the Christians in Acts 24:5. It is used of a heretical sect or those with destructive opinions in 2 Peter 2:1 (“destructive heresies” ESV).

The article on hairesis in Kittel’s Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (1964:182f) states that its “usage in Acts corresponds exactly to that of Josephus and the earlier Rabbis” but the development of the Christian sense of heresy does not parallel this Rabbinic use.

When the NT ekklesia (church) came into being, there was no place for hairesis. They were opposed to each other. This author states that “the greater seriousness consists in the fact that hairesis affect the foundation of the church in doctrine (2 Pt. 2:1), and that they do so in such a fundamental way as to give rise to a new society alongside the ekklesia” (Kittel 1964:183).

From the NT, we see the term, heresy, being used to mean what Paul called strange doctrines, different doctrine, doctrines of demons, every wind of doctrine, etc. (I Timothy 1:3; 4:1;6:3; Ephesians 4:14), as contrasted with sound doctrine, our doctrine, the doctrine conforming to godliness, the doctrine of God, etc. (I Timothy 4:6; 6:1,3; II Timothy 4:3; Titus 1:9; 2:1, 10).
