    This is confusing for sure... I do not understand why anyone who is wholly dependent on Jesus' forgiveness would turn his back on that dependency and declare that his rightness with God is because he does what is required of him.

    Actually, in a strange way, you are right. Since I am saved, I don't need to "participate", "abide", "endure", or "persevere" in order to be saved. And if you are not saved, none of those things will help you.
