My mom is doing some travel for her work. She's at some little island in the Caribbean (I know, right?). Anyway, her flight has been delayed, so she may not be coming home for a little while yet.

What are some recent problems you've had with flying?

I remember back in the eighties I flew for the first time. I flew from Texas back home to PA. I had to change planes twice. I really enjoyed the flights looking out at the clouds as they looked like mashed potatoes piled high and thought that was pretty cool. We landed, but when we landed the pilot hit the runway so hard the oxygen mask fell down and I freaked out inside a little as I had to get on another plane to Pittsburgh airport and I was a little scared, but had to get home. I've only flown once since then and love to fly and look at the scenery down below and up in the clouds.

I haven't flown in over 20 years. Not because I'm afraid of terrorists, but because of the lack of routine maintenance on the planes. I've seen too many airplanes fall out of the sky for no good reason.

I suppose if I had to fly, I would. But if I had a choice, I'd take a boat.

yeah, I always thought that if I had to go somewhere...I'd try to go by train or boat of some sort.

train. might as well drive. from Miami to Jacksonville from the day the fec was laid till service stopped in the mid 1960's it took over twelve hours.

wow...didn't know that...
im not an expert on trains but I have read up on the history of the one that splits my town. it hasn't been upgraded and it hasn't moved its location. in fact once it had two tracks for continuous north and south bound travel and some areas had three tracks for passing. yes trains pass. my avatar is actually the towns railroad station it has two tracks near it and if one is that interested I can post the older days with it there in the original location to the time of now with just a remnant of the spur for the rail service building.

I took a train from St.Paul, MN. to Sacramento, CA. It took 3 days. I liked it. I got to see things I never would've seen had I driven.
you wouldn't see much in my state from the way the fec line goes. it used to go to the keys and that was gone by the 1920's and us1 was put in its place. both I-95 and us1 and its predecessor of the atlantic hwy and Dixie hwy follow the tracks. if you know my state history that was the only way to travel to florida and in florida quickly and to move materials , save steamships.

Can you still get a suite on a train? Like in the old movies from the 30s?

in my town and only for the fec railway there is no longer passenger service. its not worth it. Amtrak still runs but that goes from Miami to dc. I could beat the train from start to finish to Miami.if the fec line still ran it cant go faster then 45mph.

take a gander at how many stops. take special note when it hits these towns and villages; Sebastian,Roseland, Wabasso,Quay(Winter Beach), Gifford, Oslo.

Quay I mentioned as it is the older name of Winter Beach and it is where st.lucie county(we were a part of that and prior it was called mosquito county) got its supplies by boat. the docks aren't there but there is a memorial to that and it was used up to the same year the train was finished to vero at least. I would have to check to be sure. but my avatar is about this time. zoom in out and you will see no power lines but a telegraph line and also the background building still is around and is a boarding room as it was then.
