Am I in the right place?

Hello all,
I entered this forum to explore if Christianity could be the thing for me. Coming from an atheist family, and never had been taught about religion, I have been wondering all my life. I am 61. This is a question that has been on my mind for a long time.
I am not a militant, anti-Christian agitator. I am a humble searcher, with the utmost respect for anyone with faith. I am also very shy, a loner really, and find it hard to talk directly to people. So I thought that this might be the place where I can ask questions, and hopefully receive some answers.

Hi Melisand, We take nature and our environment for granted, but if one would stop and think about it, it is proof of a creator. Just think, all the fruit trees there are and that they produce not only food, but they also produce the seeds to grow more fruit trees. Rivers and streams that that flow into the seas that never fill up. The universe and all the stars and planets...where did they come from. Science "so called" tries to answer these things, leaving out God. Science is guessing or manipulation of mans theories, The Bibles tells us how God made things, and it starts out with, "In the beginning God", not a philosophic argument for the existence of God. That is something you can start with. Get a Bible and start with Genesis, then go to the Book of John. You have us here to ask questions, but God will give the increase.

Agreed. I would think that even you have to admit something Melisand. Having a God that created everything makes a lot more sense than everything just appeared out of nothing and that we evolved from monkeys. If that were really the case then why isn't that still happening? Just my thoughts that's all. You don't have to agree with me but I sure hope that you find Jesus and it's good to have you here with us. :hug

Hey Melisande,

The thing that will find you completely in awe regarding God, is when you discover 2 things..

1.) He is real, He is really there, and He always is there hoping you would come to Him and be a part of His family.

2.) That He loves you, and you dont have to do anything to earn it., as God's love is pure and its unconditional......There are no expectations or hurdles or tests you have to meet or pass so that God will accept you..........He accepts you Melisaned, because to God, you are an original, one of a kind, special, and ........very special to Him.
He is not angry with you, and in fact, is very glad that you are sincerely seeking, as this is how you find the Truth.

Melisande, In this world, to try to find love, is to be judged, rejected, and hurt, usually.
This world is a cruel place, and people can be the most cruel, and in fact, a sensitive person, has the most difficulty here, as by nature, they are almost given to be harmed by such a world that is so full of Thorns and trouble.
But with God, with Jesus......they just love, and everyone wants to be loved, EVERYONE, as this is the universal condition..... and once you personally have the Love of God as your very own, you will understand why God is so Good, and Jesus is so wonderful, and it will all make perfect sense to you then....
Its all about Love.
God is Love.

blessings to you, seeker.....

WELCOME! :wave

The bible says, God is a spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
The new testament was originally written in Greek. This is a link to a site that features the Greek interlinear translation of the bible.
That way you can read what the English translation says and find the deeper meaning in the original Greek words.

God dwells within you and that is what you're feeling call you to seek him out in this later stage of your long life. The best way to know God is to be still and go within to discern his thoughts from those of your own. If you meditate , as Jesus did, that's a great way to start. I know new Christians and even seekers like yourself that begin this journey by journaling.
They write what they feel is God's words to them, his guidance and leading as they take time to be alone with that holy spirit and seek the leading toward true knowledge that he is there.

God is not a male by the way. The male pronoun is traditionally employed to refer to or describe God because men were in charge of writing what is today's bible. The same bible tells us God is a spirit. From that link to John 4:24
"Spirit" = πνεῦμα (pneuma)
Strong: G4151

GK: G4460

wind, air in motion, Jn. 3:8; breath, 2 Thess. 2:8; the substance spirit, Jn. 3:6; a spirit, spiritual being, Jn. 4:24; Acts 23:8, 9; Heb. 1:14; a bodiless spirit, specter, Lk. 24:37; a foul spirit, δαιμόνιον, Mt. 8:16; Lk. 10:20; spirit, as a vital principle, Jn. 6:63; 1 Cor. 15:45; the human spirit, the soul, Mt. 26:41; 27:50; Acts 7:59; 1 Cor. 7:34; Jas. 2:26; the spirit as the seat of thought and feeling, the mind, Mk. 8:12; Acts 19:21; spirit, mental frame, 1 Cor. 4:21; 1 Pet. 3:4; a characteristic spirit, an influential principle, Lk. 9:55; 1 Cor. 2:12; 2 Tim. 1:7; a pervading influence, Rom. 11:8; spirit, frame of mind, as distinguished from outward circumstances and action, Mt. 5:3; spirit as distinguished from outward show and form. Jn. 4:23; spirit, a divinely bestowed spiritual frame, characteristic of true believers, Rom. 8:4; Jude 19; spirit, latent spiritual import, spiritual significance, as distinguished from the mere letter, Rom. 2:29; 7:6; 2 Cor. 3:6, 17; spirit, as a term for a process superior to a merely natural or carnal course of things, by the operation of the Divine Spirit, Rom. 8:4; Gal. 4:29; a spiritual dispensation, or a sealing energy of the Holy Spirit, Heb. 9:14; the Holy Spirit, Mt. 3:16; 12:31; Jn. 1:32, 33; a gift of the Holy Spirit, Jn. 7:39; Acts 19:2; 1 Cor. 14:12; an operation or influence of the Holy Spirit, 1 Cor. 12:3; a spiritual influence, an inspiration, Mt. 22:43; Lk. 2:27; Eph. 1:17; a professedly divine communication, or, a professed possessor of a spiritual communication, 1 Cor. 12:10; 2 Thess. 2:2; 1 Jn. 4:1, 2, 3

That spirit is alive within all of that which was created by its power and will. He knew you by name before that spirit ever created anything at all. And now he's calling you to know this. May he continue to bless our journey to reunion with the truth and the life. I am glad you're here.

Sooooo,
Ask a question...
Whatcha wanna know?
The head shaving forum and tambourine lessons are great here....oh wait...we don't have those. We don't do those things.

What we honestly do is focus ourselves to be humble (because we are not perfect) and to love (because love is awesome) .

Our lives are no longer ruled by our fears and wants. The things we want most in life can't be purchased with money...and we can't fix it.
And we do believe in Good. Good isn't relative. It is highly defined and yet flexible at times. Most of the prudent seem to intristically know what is good and what is not.
We use a lot of metaphor and idioms of speech. So please ask whatever.

But rest assured that since God is personal that everyone feels their answers are the only ones... and all of us are deeply flawed.

I've been a believer most all of my life and I still ask lots of questions about my faith and what it is I believe. I chew on ideas a lot. And generally I don't let it go until I find something of an answer. Some questions may not lead to definitive answers. But they open doors to new insights and of course, other questions. Welcome to the forum.

My questions are many, but I guess that the most important one, for me, is; How is it possible for anyone/someone to place ones trust in someone/something that comes with so many questions in the first place. Don’t get me wrong, I firmly believe that all Christian believers are Christians. But why is the Christian faith so fractioned? It makes me confused. Don’t get me wrong here. This is no criticism. Most religions are devidided into fractions. But it seems to me that Christianity is the most broken up of all. What if I listen for the voice of Christ in the wrong ’language’ so to speak? What if I go to a Catholic Church to find Christ, and he is in fact calling for me from a Baptist Church? This is my first Big question.

Basically, I guess, I am trying to understand how I could receive the faith if I am doubtful where to find it
Hi Meliesande, The only way your going to know God is to read His word. Read the Book of Matthew. If you do not ask yourself, who is this man (Jesus). Then I do not know what else you can do...we can pray for you, but it is ultimately up to you to decide...but you have to read the word of God,,,That's where it starts.

Hi Melisande
I agree with what Douglas posted. Read Matthew and pray for guidance. Study the bible and then look for a church that fits in with what you find in scripture. I believe the Holy Spirit will guide you to where God wants you to be at that time. Then keep on studying, never stop seeking, because it is a lifetime of learning.
When you read Matthew you will begin to know about God and get closer to Him. He must be calling you.
God Bless

Welcome Melisande. I look forward to your questions.

Would you be so kind as to let us know if the answers we provide are helpful or not?

What 2 Qs would you say are at the top of your agenda in finding out more about Christianity and the Christian life?

Sincerely,
Oz
