Any of you smoke?

I'm a vet,one learns to compartalize death quite well.its a habit I have never unlearned.I say my goodbyes and when the time to remember hits I act on it .jaci was born a few days after my grandmother's passing.funny ,I will see a family friend tommorow who called me to tell me via her phone she had passed.
You've mastered it well. Much better than I have. As a ghetto street cop that dealt with more dead bodies every month than most non-military people would in a lifetime I had no problem compartmentalizing death just like you are describing, as long as it wasn't anyone I knew personally. But when it's personal I still go to pieces even over the death of a pet! That's why I turned down a job with the county sheriff; because they handled the areas I lived in and I was afraid of getting an assignment where I live then having to deal with terrible things happening to friends and others I might know. I've never had the talent to compartmentalize that very well.

As for smoking, I never have because I've got just enough of an allergy to something in cigarette smoke that it makes it unpleasant enough for me to never have started. But I don't condemn those who do smoke as long as they are respectful of not inconveniencing others with it and if they are Christians they aren't so addicted to it that it stops them from doing what God has called them to do. I do things that are not good for my health too just because I enjoy them, so how can I condemn someone for enjoying smoking? I don't recommend it and support anyone in their efforts to quit, but I'd be a hypocrite if I condemned them for it.

Heb_12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Any weight will keep you from progressing in the will of God, and you only hurt yourself. It will also start to show up in your doctrine if you don't do something about it.

Mar_3:35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.

Joh_7:17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

When someone has crazy doctrines, that someone has allowed weights and sin to set them off course. They are missing out, and can be self deceived eventually if they don't make the corrections.

Some take it a step further, they don't even consider the plan of God everyday, all day. Just get to church on Sunday's when they feel like it.

A weight can be anything we don't fully see at first. Something God would like to correct, and let me make this clear. God does not require everything to be perfect at once, He walks you through and brings the next thing up once we have overcome the other. He knows we are flesh and flesh is weak.

A weight is a habit to make provisions for the flesh.

Here are some example weights.

1) Staying up to late, not being ready to go in the morning.
2) needing way to much wake up time to get the day started.
3) Needing ME time to function properly.
4) Cell Phone glued to the hand where you answer a text or call when talking with someone else.
5) Smoking or anything that you have allowed yourself to crave in place of resting in the Lord.
6) Always having to make sure everyone knows your right.

These are just examples, I am sure everyone can think of a bunch more.

Mike.

What if they aren't weights?

Most of these things you have mentioned are individuals personality quirks.

But if a person drops them to do a task set before them by God....IE a mission trip...then I really don't understand how they are weights. More like dropping those things makes people Borg drones.

I smoke but only because its addictive.

OK, I really don't have a good excuse, my will power must be set on lazy mode.

Sometimes, often, my resolve to "not smoke" has been firm and resolute.

Where it breaks down is under severe duress. And yes, I have had no small amount of severe duress applied during the times I've relapsed, as previously noted.

People do handle stresses differently. Smoking is one of those outlets. The other factor can be social, such as the cigar smokers. When I wasn't smoking I was not a freakazoid "ex smoker" complaining about everyone who does. I grew up in the construction business. It's a pretty hard and hardly lot of folks. Very course and rough around the edges. Things that bother soft people don't bother bother construction people.

I also have an exceptionally strong 'bonding' personality i.e. I will put myself in others shoes in order to relate, and not come of as a hypocrite stuffed shirt holier than thou self righteous twit.

The whole cigars can make your lungs bleed if I inhaled thing scared me away from them!
I don't know of anyone that inhales a cigar but I've heard of it being done. I could not do that.

A weight is something that would hold you back or delay a more important task, being a habit you developed. You know these by a violation of conscience.
If you find yourself saying, "why did I stay up late again, I wanted to work in the garden this morning." "I was on the phone with the for 3 hours, I was planing to get the dishes done but now have to pick up the kids and start dinner."

These can be weights depending on the person and what their conscience is telling them.

1 Corinthians 7:1
Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.

Violators please raise your hand.

1Co 7:1 Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
1Co 7:2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

You should not be touching women Smaller, you should be only with your wife.

1Co 7:5 Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.

Thayer Definition:
1) illicit sexual intercourse
1a) adultery, fornication, homosexuality, lesbianism, intercourse with animals etc.
1b) sexual intercourse with close relatives; Lev. 18
1c) sexual intercourse with a divorced man or woman; Mar_10:11,Mar_10:12
2) metaphorically the worship of idols
2a) of the defilement of idolatry, as incurred by eating the sacrifices offered to idols

You commit none of these having your own wife or husband. This is not a weight, this is blatant sin and leads to death.

I take Paul's statement at face value for what it says. Paul's approach to marriage was this: Marry if you must. But it is better for some, spiritually speaking if they don't. Paul never married. His statement is valid for his perspective of starting point. As believers we understand the Spiritual Marriage Principle is the Church's members and Christ as the priority Marriage.

Yeah, in a perfect world with perfect people we would all live up to this, wouldn't we? But in the imperfect world that imperfect me lives in I'm not qualified to pass judgement on others hearts for the things they do that are not specifically condemned in scripture.

Right, and we would not judge anyone. God does not even require everything to be fixed at once, nobody would make it. It seems to me though when I think I got one thing fixed the Lord had been dealing with me on and I think all is good, I come to find something else He wants to mention. It seems like there is always room to change that a bit and do that a bit different.

As I said, we all have a conscience and it's important we don't leave things on it. That is different for everyone.

Seems to be the way it always works for me too. :yes

Must be a pretty wimpy cigar! The ones I have would choke me out if I inhaled.
See, ya learn something every day! Years ago a friend who smoked cigars gave me one to try. I figured the reason it just about killed me was that I wasn't a smoker so just not used to it. Now I've learned that I guess I wasn't supposed to inhale! :shrug :shame

One thing that you can say about regular smokers...

They don't succumb to peer pressure.

Which isn't a bad thing... especially when trying to live a Christian lifestyle.
Oh I know most Christians believe it to be some kind of sin...but in what fashion I'm not sure.
A weight?
I don't buy it.

There are some Christians who consider it a sin as I have been told by few along with "You will smell like hell when you go there"

Well balanced sight above.

I've known more than a few dedicated believers who were "healthily" well into their 80's and 90's and smoked. I'm more apt to view believers who are overly attentive to what they perceive to be the sins of others as hypocrites regarding their own sins. So in that way the habit can run those kinds people out of the closet for viewing as a warning to avoid them and their hypocrisy. I'll readily admit that a large part of the "habit" is social bonding with what many believers consider to be the "lesser class" people. I don't see things that way nor do I live my life that way. I live with common people who have common traits and practices, mostly working class. Romans 12:16 is how I live my life. It also happens to be "where" I grew up. I come from hearty peasant farmer/construction stock who don't look kindly on religious hypocrites and speak "rightfully" against such, particularly behind their back.
