Edward is correct. Magicians call the framework a "suspension", and this kind requires some prep work, as the foundation he's locking into with his right foot is buried underground.

Check this one out. It's called a Blaney Ladder Levitation and costs $6,000. This one drove me so insane that I actually paid for the explanation. It is a marvel of engineering.
