First, what are the idols that people worship today? The things that I can think of from the top of my head are, money, sex, possession, emotion, and maybe laziness? Is or can laziness be an idol? What else am I missing? Please list ALL that you can think of or know.

As always, thank you for your time and assistance in advance.

Movie Stars , Music Stars , Tik tok and youtube sensations , TV stars , Sports figures , Politicians , Government leaders , Military leaders , Religious leaders and ?.

How about our own life? Are we truly willing to lay down our life for Him or have we done so?

"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment."
Matthew 22:37-38 NKJV

Could you clarify more on what you mean by youtube senstations? Also, are all social media idols? If it is, would it still be if I am connecting with other christian believers to talk about things like in this forum? Do you mean it becomes an idol when you use it the most of the day just for entertainment when there is better things to do?

The youtube stars with LOTS of followers can be idols . But this is lot about the person doing the worshiping , almost ANYTHING can be an idol . All you have to do is place it above God in your life . Did I help any ?

How I see it, it always depends.

One person's idol might be the television, but that might be money for another.

I don't watch a whole lot of television. I'm in no way, shape, or form attached to television. I could live without one. Is it nice to have, though? Of course! But I rarely use it. I usually hear more television from the kids and myself than I do for myself.

I think almost anything on this Earth can be an idol if someone pays it more attention and respect than to God.

The internet totally used to be my idol. I used to have a huge problem with internet addiction. Even though the stuff I was doing was forums, chatting, doing artwork, and listening to music - it still became an idol that was hard to part with. I always have to think twice before jumping on the computer because it seems to have this power that can sap me in for hours. My days are generally more productive so I don't feel that need to jump on the computer if I"m busy with other things.

I think a idol is anything that is put before Gods grace and mercy. Something seen as more interesting or impressive. It could be anything at all.

Material things can be idolized.
Cars, jewelry, furniture, paintings, a garden!,
Anything material, clothes, make-up, etc.

I believe it's fine to have these thing.
At what point do they become idolized?

This is not 100% clear to me.

IOW, how does one love a thing more than God?
Can a Christian even do this?

I often wonder if I was truly given a choice between having some material thing, lifestyle, spouse, child, etc., and God which would I choose?

"He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me."
Matthew 10:37 NKJV

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple......So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple."
Luke 14:26, 33 ESV

For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
2 Timothy 3:2-5 ESV

Happily, we aren't given that choice...
unless a person wishes to become a Catholic Priest or Nun.
They truly have a decision to make, but for most of them it's an easy decision.

Also, I think some things are easier to give for God than others...if the choice DID have to be made.

Lifestyle could be sacrificed for God,,,but a spouse to have for life?
A child?

That would really be a decision that we THINK might be easy, but I doubt it would be...merely because we're here in this Now and we still carry around our carnal selves that crave companionship and children.

Jesus was the only "human" that was perfect.

And, I think we never know how we would react to any situation until we are actually faced with it.

God accepts us with our defects and must surely know that in our heart we love Him.

Apparently, it is possible somehow.

Do you think a Christian person can love a material thing more than God?

What does it mean to love God anyway?
Do we demonstrate our love by following His ways?

What if we had our choice to have an ugly car but keep our belief in God
or
Have a beautiful car and lose our belief in God?

I do believe I would choose the first.
This is a demonstration of love, isn't it?

Or even no car at all.

LOL
I wouldn't be able to get around....but God provides.
I actually have a sister in law that took buses for years because she felt that having a car was a luxury.
(any car - she's born again as is my brother).
Even with no car, we can still praise God.
