Hello all
I'm a pretty new Christian still seeking answers to some of my questions. My question is this, does Baptism in the Holy Spirit happen when you ask to be saved by Jesus or is this a seperate event? I can't get clarity to this question, thanks in advance for the feedback.

God Bless

Pardon my chuckle ... If there is 20 Christians in a room and you ask that question most likely you will receive 20 + different answers...
Some say yes some no .. God will always be true to us and gift to us what we need...

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit comes after a person is born again.

Baptism in water is a separate Baptism.

1 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." 3 And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." 4 Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. Acts 19:1-6

and again -

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, 47 "Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days. Acts 10:44-48

How could those with Peter know the Holy Spirit had been poured out upon the Gentiles?

For the heard them speak with tongues...

Tongues is the evidence that someone has been Baptized in the Holy Spirit.

Jesus said -

16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; Mark 16:16-17

These are some of the scriptures about the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

There are more.

Bless you as you seek Him.

John 6:29 Jesus answered, "This work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

John 14:15-17 "If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever - the Spirit of Truth

Jesus commanded the above and then this is what happens when you believe entirely.........he is the literal Son, died and after 3 days raised from the dead, ascended to heaven....his body isn't here on earth.

You will know when you have been given the Holy Spirit, it's the moment you REALLY believe. As real as you asking us this question.

All I teach is all I have for an answer and that answer comes from my, personal, experience.

December 31, 1989, I was playing my last professional gig in, of all places, Porky's, located in Humble, Texas. Humble, pronounce with the silent h because it is named for the Cockney Englishman that established the same, once, major oil company.

At fifteen minutes to Midnight (Midnight, bar time) I began the traditional Aulde Lang Sine, ringing in the New Year for the drunks. It is important that you understand I was a fighter with knuckles, all, scared and the MS I'm being exterminated by did notput the scars on the outside of my head, ok, I was a typical Texas, wannabe Country musician.

As I sang that number a gentleman that had, always, avoided challenging me, my size and rep were in timidating, danced his wife closely past the stage and flipped me off.
for the first time I, just, smiled at him, finished the song and left without doing the other two sets and without any paycheck but having, just then, added, unreliable, to my reputation resulting in being Black Listed with all the clubs in SE Texas.

At that, very, moment I was saved and knewe the Holy spirit had just indwelt me, a condition that is, for the Christian, not reversible. If I recall, correctly, that was Saturday night and that, following, morning I entered Service for my Lord and I began my Eternal Life.

I pray this helps you to understand, if you are saved, you carry the Holy Spirit into everything you do. Ask the Mods. here and they can testify, I am not always the best example to follow but I am guilty of trying to follow Jesus.

May God pour the Blessings and even more on you and yours that He has smothered me and mine with. Amen!
