There are several denominations that believe and teach that between death and resurrection that the body soul and Spirit sleep. Among these and most prominent are JW and SDA. People who do not believe in the Father, Son and Holy Ghost as the trinity do not realize that we ourselves are a trinity. (Paul said,"I pray your whole SPIRIT and SOUL and BODY be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ," 1 Thess. 5:23) The body contains all the senses, sight, hearing, touching, smelling and tasting. The spirit of man (our intelligence) is our reasoning, understanding, discovering, solving, either simple or complex (1 Cor. 2:11; John 11:33). The soul of man is the seat of emotions and affections like love, hate, sorrow and anguish (1 Sam. 18:1; 2 Sam. 5:8; Job 14:22; Luke 2:35; Psalms 107:26 Mark 8:36-37). Our Lord at Gethsemane (Mark 14:34)
DEATH, Nowhere in The Bible does it say that death is annihilation. The Bible speaks of three kinds of death. PHYSICAL DEATH: is separation of the spirit from the body. James says, "The body without the spirit is dead," James 2:26
SPIRITUAL DEATH, Means separation from God. Paul tells the Ephesians, "You hath He quickened, who were dead in your trespasses and sins." Eph. 2:1. And to Timothy he wrote, "She that liveth in pleasure is DEAD while she liveth. 1 Tim. 5:6.
ETERNAL DEATH, Is eternal separation from God with an everlasting punishment as the results of God's judgment. Rev. 21:8
Here is what Christ has done for us: We see Jesus (God) who became a little lower than the angels, (for a little while) for the suffering of death , that by The Fathers grace, that He should taste death for EVERY MAN, in whom he created all things. That He would be the captain of our salvation by suffering all things of men that He would be a better High Priest to sanctify us and being the Son of man and knowing our suffering, He was not ashamed to call us brethren. And He who sanctifies and those who were sanctified are the same, So that through His death, He might destroy him that had the power of death...the devil. And deliver them, who through the fear of death all their lifetime, subject to bondage, and to take them in whom were sanctified up above the angels with Him (Heb. 2:5-18) And our Spirit will forever be with the Lord unto the day of redemption (2 Cor. 5:8)
