Bible 101 Lesson 2B

Adam and Eve
Adam is created in the image and likeness of God from the earth. (Adam is a form of the Hebrew word for “earth.”)

From Adam, God makes Eve, the mother of all mankind and the appropriate companion for Adam.

God gave Adam and Eve the opportunity to have eternal life because they are allowed to eat the fruit of the tree of life. However, God forbade them to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil because it will cause death.

So what’s wrong with knowing good and evil? It’s not wrong; it’s just not their job. Their “job” is to know God Who is Good and life and truth and love. Also, they do not have the intellectual capacity of handle the knowledge of good and evil. It is too complex a subject for man who, unlike God, is not omniscient and Who knows every aspect of men’s hearts.

The temptation that the devil uses is that Adam and Eve would be “like God”. But, they are already “like God” having been created in God’s image and likeness. But it sounds like a good idea to Eve so she eats some of the fruit and gives some to Adam who also eats it. But Adam gets the blame for introducing death to mankind, not Eve.

Why? Maybe because Adam was bigger and stronger and could have stopped her but didn’t. He just watched while Eve did exactly the one thing that God said not to do. Then he did it too!

1Co 15:22a “For as in Adam all die,..”
and
Rom 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world,
and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—

Some symbols: (types, shadows, etc.)
Adam names all the animals. Naming the animals is the act of a ruler; Adam was made to have dominion (rule) over all creation.

Adam was made in the image of God and Eve is his wife.
Christ is the exact image of God and the Church is His bride.

Eve comes from Adam; he would lead mankind into sin and death.
Jesus comes from Mary; He would lead mankind into righteousness and eternal life.

There was a tree of life and a tree of death in the garden.
The cross was intended to be a “tree” of death but it became the tree of life.

The Devil
The devil doesn’t make anyone do anything. He just presents evil as a desirable thing. We have the power to decide to accept the devil’s offering of pleasurable sin or to reject it. The better we know God the better we are prepared to see the evil that the devil has in mind for us.

The result of sin

Gen 3:16 To the woman He (God) said:
“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children;
Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.”

Apparently, they were originally “equal partners.” Now man will rule over woman.

Gen 3:17-19 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:

Adam listened to his wife instead of to God.
“Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life.
Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field.
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread”

Whereas, in the garden, food was readily available and easy to get, now Adam will have to work very hard until the day he dies in order to have enough to eat. Adam and Eve wanted to be “like God.” OK, so go make your own food.

“Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.”

We will all die and our bodies will suffer corruption (will rot) and decompose back into the earth from which we came.

Jesus’ resurrection changed that. We will all be raised immortal and incorruptible. (1 Cor 15:52-53)

Adam and Eve are driven out of the garden and an angel is placed at the entrance to the garden to keep mankind away from the tree of life.

Why?

Because, now that man has sinned, it would be a hellish nightmare for mankind to have access to the tree of life and to continue to sin eternally. Death actually brings an end to sin.

When they are the forbidden fruit, they discovered that they were naked. They lost their innocence and were now subject to the temptations of lust and sexual misconduct. So God gave them skins of animals to cover their nakedness. That required that animals die to give up their skins.

Heb 9:22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. (RSV)

The Children of Adam and Eve

Cain and Able
Here we find that sacrificial offerings to the Lord have been established and that a blood sacrifice is required. (…for the forgiveness of sin…)

Cain brings vegetables and God rejects that bloodless sacrifice. When Cain pouts, God encourages Him to do the right thing and to guard against sin.

So Cain murders his “goodie-two-shoes” brother. Then there will be no blood sacrifice to compare with his.

God curses Cain by making him a “wanderer” but he also puts a sign of protection on Cain so that people would know that Cain in under God’s protection.

So, God protects the first murderer instead of putting him to death as the law of Moses will require?

Why?

Because; “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2Pe 3:9)

Eve has another son called Seth.
