I recently went to a mega church where the preacher had a personal body guard. I know of at least one other church in our area where certain members of the staff carry pistols.

And when we visited IHOP in KC, they had a "church" police department, complete with uniforms and marked cars (at least one).

When did this stuff start up, and why?

A couple of reasons I can think of.
1. They are afraid.
Someone has threatened their lives.
2. They are afraid.
People may come up to them and ask questions about what they are doing that they don't want to answer.
