Born Into Sin

Someone said something on the forum that I thought was very interesting.

If we are born into sin, how come we cannot be born into that particular sin?

For instance, this is coming from an ex-homosexual, it's still a battle every day, btu getting easier and easier. Is it possible I was born into that particular sin? I didn't choose to be a homosexual, really I tired hard NOT TO BE when I was. I hated it. I also had an issue with LUST. Is it not possible I was born into LUST. (The iniquities of the father is passed down, my mother and father had that problem too).

So really, is this a viable question?

I think that to say we are born into sin without being born into particular sin is a statement that falls apart upon analysis. As always, when presented with a claim that "X" is the case, we need to ask ourselves "what does it really mean for X to be the case?".

In this context, I would argue that there is no such thing as a "general, non-specific sin". A sin without specificity is a truly empty concept. The term "sin" really refers to a collection of behaviours / attitudes, from which no generalized sin can be abstracted. As soon as you try to do so, you inevitably end up "naming" a specific sin (e.g. the sin of rebelliousness).

I think there is every reason to believe that people are born with certain predispositions. Why would a person choose to be a homosexual, given all the societal rejection this will bring about?

EXACTLY!

I never chose to be gay. I HATED the idea. I felt so horrible inside! I never CHOSE it. It just happened, I tried to stop it, it took a LONG TIME to make it stop.

Many of our behaviors are learned very early in life before we really have memories. Or influnced by trauma in our childhood. So that you didn't ever know you weren't gay proves little.

But in reality it matters little. It has been shown that children of alcoholics are much more likely to be alchoholic. So do we say, oh well they should continue to be alcoholics because they were born that way. Whether it is a learned or inhereted behavior in some fashion, genetic or otherwise, one does not let cancer run amok simply because it is a genetic form. It still needs to be cut out and Christ's grace has the power to do so.

Blessings

Exactly. If someone were to grow up in an alcohollic home, the Bible says teh iniquities of the father are passed down. (Only Chris can take it away)
