Can christians smoke cigarettes and still be christians?

There is so much made about this, I'd like to know what you all think about it?

Thank you.

I smoke :-(

I "played Christian" for a couple years, then I was finally able to come to full and true repentance about 8 months ago. Can't quite kick the habit. I definitely consider myself Christian. Think about it...smoking used to be so very, very common and acceptable, particularly for men. My grandfather smoked like a chimney up until the mid-to-late 70s, and he was a Christian.

I have a friend who is closer to our Lord than ANYONE I know - and he smokes like a '74 Vega ....

I don't like it, I don't think God likes it - but I know of no one closer to our Lord than him.

good reply Christ_empowered.
smoking is an issue with traditions and society.
the Turks use to gather together, smoke and discuss things, then go and worship together.
you've got the North Carolina church out in the tobacco fields smoking, and the Southern Cal church condemning smokers.

Smoking like a '74 Vega...ha ha ha!

I remember those cars.

They might not be Christians until they are in between cigarettes.

Every place you give to the flesh, is a place of good things and victory from God your missing out.

Heb_12:1
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

So giving into those Weights would hinder our race for doing all God has set for us to do. That can't be a good thing.

Mike.

Probably due to he will meet the Creator sooner then those who don't, don't ya think?

All serious though, quitting about a year and a half ago, I feel 1000% better and more alive then in years past. Does God want us to smoke, I would say most definitely not. But can Christians smoke? Sure, but does God support a habit that is known beyond a shadow of doubt in science is harmful to our health? The whole present your bodies as sacrifice thing comes to mind Romans 12:1.

Of course Chrisitans can smoke cigarettes. It's not a healthy thing to do - I gave up smoking 40 years ago - but there's nothing inherently un-Christian about smoking. Christians have a lot more important issues to consider than smoking or not smoking cigarettes.

I was about 40 when i figured out a person could be a 'smoking christian' smoking is not directly condemned while gluttony is ... shall we have another potluck

no a christian should not smoke nor should we gossip, back bite etc

When we point out to people that smoking is harmful to our health, we must also remember that Monosodiumglutamate (MSG), high fructose corn syrup, and partially hydrogenated oils have all proven to produce cancer cells and a slew of other health problems.
Have you eliminated these products from your diet?
Have you shared the health issues with others?

I tend to think that smoking is a society issue today and the church is making the most of it, rather than the other way around.
I tend to think that people who get lung cancer from smoking also have dietary issues that were never resolved.

Yes, Christians should be allowed to smoke.

Should they? No. It makes for a lousy witness.

I went to this silly little home church once. It was run by a renegade wanna-be pastor and his wife, and attended by his adult kids (don't remember anyone else being part of it). Their home reeked of tobacco and I thought to myself, "and I'm supposed to expect them to lead and instruct the people of God while they themselves are in utter bondage to tobacco?"

We all have our things that we struggle with, but Christians in bondage to the flesh in such a visible and outward way makes for a terrible witness.

The motors they used in those things were good for about 50,000 miles. The bores in the block would wear out by then and make them smoky beaters (we used to have another phrase for a worn out beater, but I haven't used it in years and realized I probably shouldn't use it here, lol).

I remember seeing a 1975 Cosworth Vega in Berrien Springs, MI in 1980 and thinking, "wow, that is totally cool." Ah, the good ol' days. I miss 'em dearly.

You had President Clinton asking the Christian Coalition to help get legislation through Congress to protect children from cigarette addiciton.

And you had the Christian Coalition, many of whose voters lived in the North Carolina tobacco belt, telling President Clinton they weren't interested.

It either isn't a 'Christian' issue at all.

Or else the 'children of this world are wiser than the children of light'...(Luke 6.18).

Progressive Era: Various 'causes' get adopted by Progressive activitsts: these include trying to stop black people from having children, anti-smoking and Prohibition.

Early 20th century: a woman gets arrested in New York City for smoking a cigarette.

World War One: Huge numbers of women send cigarettes to troops stationed in France.

1920s and 1930s: Huge numbers of women start smoking; tobacco corporations hold classes to teach women how to smoke; while bootleggers make money, as do Canadian distillers, who, while Prohibtion is in force in Ontario, can make money exporting their wares 'elsewhere'.

....1930s, 1940s, 1950s: Havana, Cuba becomes a vast drinking, prostitution, and gambling center.

1959: Promises are made to 'clean things up' by a certain guy called Castro; he doesn't, however, ban cigars.

Early 21st century: Californian municipalities try to ban smoking outdoors and drive-thru restaurants (including in San Bernadino where drive-thru restaurants started).

(The pendulum swings like a pair of drop earrings...)

smokes like a '74 Vega ....

My parents bought a 74 Vega new. The station wagon type, puke green.
Ha, it's funny you should say this. I was going to comment on the fact that a lot of them were that gross green color. I'm of the opinion that alone doomed the car. When kept in good shape, and not colored green, they were pretty cool cars.

When I bought my first car, it was a choice between a silver '73 Vega, and a maroon '74 Nova SS right across the street. Both were $1500.00. I went with the Nova. But the Vega had my serious consideration. It really did.

so dont exhale ?

In a variation on President Clinton's 'I smoked marijuana but didn't inhale', the Canadian Federal Opposition Leader Justin Trudeau said he has smoked marijuana while he has been a Member of Parliament.

I guess it now goes on his Homeland Security file.

Someone has suggested that if Mr Trudeau (yes, the son of the smiling guy from 30 years ago) becomes Prime Minister of Canada and is prevented from entering the US because of his marijuana record, maybe the US President of the day had better go see Mr Trudeau in his office in Ottawa, Canada instead of inviting Mr Trudeau to visit him in the Oval Office.

(Meanwhile, the Premier of Ontario, Ms Wynne, said she did it, too. :chin )

Well there is a thing called Christian liberty. I don't think anyone who smokes isn't a Christian, but it's certainly not a healthy thing to do with your body, and should be avoided. Our bodies are temples for the Holy Spirit.

Sounds about right, I reckon!

If you haven't started to smoke, better not to.

Blessings.
