This Week's Prayer Guide
Pronunciation note: in English, Taiyuan is pronounced roughly as “Tie you en”
October 19 - Churches in Taiyuan have often experienced heavy persecution. Just last week, after these prayer requests were originally collected, one church in Taiyuan was raided by the police. As of this writing, eleven people remain in detention, including a breastfeeding mother. These brothers and sisters will remain in detention for fifteen days, after which they will either be released or charges will be brought. Please pray for their release, for their safety, and for no further action to be taken against them.
October 20 - A pastor in Taiyuan says, “The biggest change these five years is that house churches—especially in Taiyuan—have faced comprehensive attention and pressure. For our church, under these broader movements, we suffered two major rounds of persecution in the past five years, with heavy impact: we lost our meeting venue and our fixed worship place.” Pray for this church, that they would continue having ways to meet together and minister even after losing their meeting place.
October 21 - “We’ve experienced significant persecution,” says one Taiyuan pastor. “Pastor Y’s church was hit; ours was too. Personally, I was detained four times in one year. Brother Z was imprisoned for two years.” Pray for believers who are detained or imprisoned in Taiyuan to know the Lord’s comfort and presence, and for the churches to be praying for them.
October 22 - A Taiyuan pastor says, “With tighter online religious regulation, local authorities have increased attention on churches. For example, last month, two or three sisters from related churches were warned at home by state security simply for forwarding a prayer request on WeChat. Now their churches have split into small group gatherings of just a few people, moving increasingly underground.” Pray for believers who have been pressured by the police or who are being monitored online to be wise and faithful, and for this pressure to cease.
October 23 - A pastor in Taiyuan reflects, “Pray for my family. After the impact of persecution, there are many areas that need healing, recovery, and restoration—my inner life, my wife’s health, and our children’s hearts. Our son is 25 now, but the shockwaves hit him hard—his faith has waned significantly. That has pained me deeply these two years. Please pray for our family’s recovery—that our spiritual condition would be restored.”
October 24 - “Shanxi and Taiyuan have been dominated by a power of death,” says one Taiyuan pastor. “There have been many killings here over the last one hundred years, including the slaughter of missionaries. That culture of violence and toughness seems to rule many. People think death is powerful. But the gospel they most need is that the incarnate Jesus died for them—and by his death destroyed the one who has the power of death. Shanxi and Taiyuan have experienced death, but if people can see in Jesus’ death the destruction of the devil’s dominion and receive freedom, no longer enslaved by fear of death—that would be a vital encouragement to Taiyuan.” Pray that God would encourage the people of Taiyuan with the good news of Jesus’ victory over death.
October 25 - A pastor in Taiyuan says, “The people in my church strive to face family and work with joy. Even during the pandemic, they did not lose heart. Even when we hear another church is being persecuted, our members are not alarmed—they say we must hold fast to our faith. If it comes to us, we’ll face it; if not, we’ll press on. That encourages me.” Praise God for faithfulness in the midst of persecution, and pray for believers in Taiyuan to not lose heart and always be reminded that Jesus is still king!
