This Week's Prayer Guide

Pronunciation note: in English, Taiyuan is pronounced roughly as “Tie you en”

October 12 - This week, pray for the needs of churches in Taiyuan. Pray for churches in Taiyuan to be transformed by the gospel of Christ.

October 13 - “I find many brothers and sisters are not prepared or planning to grow,” says one Taiyuan pastor. “Some don’t believe growth is possible. Many have settled into a ‘religious’ pattern: attend worship, go home; then attend again next time. But we haven’t considered that continuous worship and gathering before God brings growth—ourselves, our families, our children. We should form a Christian community, a covenant community, God’s kingdom among us. We’ve tried to preach this vision, but many don’t believe it or don’t care—they only believe in a ‘religious’ pattern.” Pray that the Holy Spirit would break through this ‘religious’ pattern and bring people into the transformative life of Christ.

October 14 - One Taiyuan pastor says, “Internally, another challenge is the low priority of church in people’s hearts. For many, church life and service are not primary—it’s just a part of life: after work, attend a meeting, listen to a sermon, and then return to ‘real life.’ Another tendency is “church hopping”: today here, tomorrow there—preferring not to be constrained while sampling different atmospheres. Few truly treat the church as home and invest themselves to grow.” Pray for more Christians in Taiyuan to have a vision for investing and growing, both in church and in life.

October 15 - “Historically,” says one Taiyuan pastor, “some charismatic groups in our region have roots connected to Watchman Nee’s ‘Little Flock’ movement. People here tend to be anti-structure and anti-denominational—especially opposed to Reformed churches. The Bread of Life movement was outspoken in opposing Reformed theology. So it’s particularly hard for Reformed churches to survive in Shanxi.” Pray for better understanding between churches of different denominations and backgrounds in Taiyuan, and for the gospel to always be transforming churches to look more like Christ.

October 16 - Because of increased pressure, a pastor in Taiyuan says that, “Evangelism is largely compressed into the workplace. Brothers and sisters boldly bear witness to their identity and live out the gospel there, praying to experience God’s work in them. Another setting is inviting colleagues, family, and friends to Sunday worship. These two—workplace and Sunday—are our main evangelistic platforms. But if we set out to evangelize in public community spaces, we’ll be stopped quickly—even security guards can detain you.” Pray for churches to find creative ways to be witnesses for Christ in the midst of this environment.

October 17 - “Beyond theological foundations,” says one Taiyuan pastor, “we also need the Spirit’s work—not in a charismatic sense, but the Spirit renewing lives with joy. If people can taste joy in the Lord each Lord’s Day, they’ll more readily bear witness at work and at home and respond to the church’s call to serve.” Pray for the Holy Spirit to be working in the hearts of Christians in Taiyuan, that more may truly taste the joy of the Lord.

October 18 - A pastor in Taiyuan says, “The hard part for pastors is that we can only be faithful; the results are in God’s hands. When lives are renewed, when strength is given, when people respond—it is the Spirit’s work. Otherwise, in ourselves we do not naturally respond. That’s our pressure: we long for the church to flourish and for none to be left behind, but results are not ours to control.” Pray for pastors in Taiyuan to be faithful to Christ and to leave the results to the Spirit, to not feel pressure but rather to be able to serve the Lord and trust him with the outcome.
