Comparing Bible Versions

I don't know if or if, then how long you've been saved but a cursory read of the NT teaches us to be careful in matters of this type. I do not use the NLT because it falls outside the KJV on the scale of w4w vs i4i translations. As I recall, the last time I looked at the scale the KJV and the NLT were not tremendously far apart on the i4i (i=idea) but the NLT
 
was further south than the KJV and the last time I checked there was one other w4w (w=word) translation reputed to be better than my MASB but I also could not find a copy to purchase then.

This sort of trashing the Word of God usually comes from the self righteous KJV Only crowd. Regardless of your motive here, you want to be careful. That study I mentioned also teaches us that we are to judge the fruits of the people we meet and this is not sweet smelling fruit.

My daughter teaches the Primaries Class and her primary text is the NKJV and when an illustration is needed she reads the children the same passage from the NLT so the children can get a good grasp and to confirm what she is instructing them is what God said.

There have, in the past few centuries been a few bad translations but just as God promised, they did not stand the test of time. If the NLT, is not true to the Word of God, God will strike it down.
 
That site that ostensibly "exposes" the NLT says this as one of their reasons...

Acts 12:4 - changes "Easter" to the incorrect "Passover" (See Numbers 28:16,17 and Acts 12:2 in the KJB)

The word that is translated as "Easter" in this verse is translated as "Passover" everywhere else. The KJV translators made a mistake. But the KJV-only crowd can't admit that there is anything wrong with the KJV, so they call any Bible translation that corrects this mistake "straight from Hell" and "expose" it. I wouldn't pay any attention to that crowd if I were you.

How does this contribute to the conversation?
 
I have posted this I think about 3 or 4 times on this board in the last 4 or 5 years, so because we have a lot of new people it is time to post it again.This translation when I first read it made me so mad I saw red. How could this fool of a man put this out as a Bible making people stumble. Let me give you all a example below. I post this every now and then so you all will know what is out there.This translation changes the original Greek and Hebrew nomenclature into modern nicknames. St. Peter becomes "Rocky," Mary Magdalene becomes "Maggie," Aaron becomes "Ron," Andronicus becomes "Andy" and Barabbas becomes "Barry."

A brand-new translation of the Bible – praised by Britain's archbishop of Canterbury, that nation’s senior Christian voice – flatly contradicts traditional core Christian beliefs on sex and morality.
Titled "Good as New," the new Bible is translated by former Baptist minister John Henson for the "One" organization, to produce what the group calls a "new, fresh and adventurous" translation of the Christian scriptures.

The 104th archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams – leader of the Church of England – describes it is a book of "extraordinary power," but admitted many would be startled by its content.
"Instead of condemning fornicators, adulterers and 'abusers of themselves with mankind'," says Ruth Gledhill, the London Times religious affairs correspondent, "the new version of his first letter to Corinth has St. Paul advising Christians not to go without sex for too long in case they get 'frustrated.'"


"The new version, which Dr. Williams says he hopes will spread 'in epidemic profusion through religious and irreligious alike', turns St. Paul's strictures against fornication on their head," adds the Times.
The One organization that produced the new Bible translation is dedicated to "establish[ing] peace, justice, dignity and rights for all." It is also focused on "sustainable use of the earth's resources," challenging "oppression, injustice, exclusion and discrimination" as well as accepting "one another, valuing their diversity and experience."
According to Ekklesia, a London-based "theological think tank" that supports the "One" translation:

  • The translation is pioneering in its accessibility, and changes the original Greek and Hebrew nomenclature into modern nicknames. St. Peter becomes "Rocky," Mary Magdalene becomes "Maggie," Aaron becomes "Ron," Andronicus becomes "Andy" and Barabbas becomes "Barry."
In keeping with the times, translator Henson deftly translates "demon possession" as "mental illness" and "Son of Man," the expression Jesus frequently used to describe himself, as "the Complete Person." In addition, parables are rendered as "riddles," baptize is to "dip" in water, salvation becomes "healing" or "completeness" and Heaven becomes "the world beyond time and space."
Here's how Williams, the top Anglican archbishop, describes the new Bible: "Instead of being taken into a specialized religious frame of reference – as happens even with the most conscientious of formal modern translations – and being given a gospel addressed to specialized concerns … we have here a vehicle for thinking and worshipping that is fully earthed, recognizably about our humanity."
In addition, notes Ekklesia, the archbishop praises Henson's translation for eliminating "the stale, the technical, the unconsciously exclusive words and policies" in other translations.

Mark 1:4
Authorized version: "John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins."
New: "John, nicknamed 'The Dipper,' was 'The Voice.' He was in the desert, inviting people to be dipped, to show they were determined to change their ways and wanted to be forgiven."
Mark 1:10-11
Authorized version: "And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him. And there came a voice from the heaven saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

New version: "Take a running jump, Holy Joes, humbugs!"

New: "Meanwhile Rocky was still sitting in the courtyard. A woman came up to him and said: 'Haven't I seen you with Jesus, the hero from Galilee?" Rocky shook his head and said: 'I don't know what the hell you're talking about!'"

KJV: "Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: [It is] good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, [to avoid] fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband."
New: "Some of you think the best way to cope with sex is for men and women to keep right away from each other. That is more likely to lead to sexual offences. My advice is for everyone to have a regular partner."
1 Corinthians 7:8-7
KJV: "I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn."
New: "If you know you have strong needs, get yourself a partner. Better than being frustrated."

ok, tob is the word full of only English speakers? I mean if I was only able to use Hebrew then I would the entire bible in Hebrew. but it known that the nt is in greek and that doesn't and cant be translated literally from greek to Hebrew
there has to be some thought translation along with literal. besides modern Hebrew isn't the same as biblical Hebrew. sure they have some things in common but like koine greek,middle English its not spoken.'

common translation from the lxx for the Name of God. kuryous. that means Lord. the Hebrews did that on purpose so that the greeks wouldn't defile the Name and they use Adonai and other names of God in place of the YHWH.

KJV translators did not make a mistake. The word Easter does belong in the KJV, but depicts the evilness of Herod who celebrated this pagan holiday they called Easter and not that of the passover.
Acts 12:4 And when he (Herod) had apprehended him (Peter), he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.
 
I only use the KJV plus the Jerusalem Bible as the Jerusalem Bible gives more clarity to that of the old English of the KJV
 
the man herod lived in jewry. do you think that the jews would defile the temple with that? that my friend is EXACTLY what the AOD is. but we have a record of what the romand did that is the event of the aod. in order to worship the god ashtart. the jews would have to allowed him to do that.they wouldn't have. they were corrupt but did you ever hear them being called idolaters after that sort?

think about that. herod had such control of the Pharisees he had them killed. so if they remained after that, the people killed those that perverted the torah. that is why the man hillel sent men to teach the Pharisees the law. so that the people wouldn't kill them. gammelel his grandson was the one whom taught paul. paul would aslo have to enter the temple when that was going on. as it wouldn't just be ashtart, as they also offered children to that god tammuz.paul entered the temple for a nazarite vow.

Intending after Easter to bring him forth - Μετα το πασχα , After the passover. Perhaps there never was a more unhappy, not to say absurd, translation than that in our text. But, before I come to explain the word, it is necessary to observe that our term called Easter is not exactly the same with the Jewish passover. This festival is always held on the fourteenth day of the first vernal full moon; but the Easter of the Christians, never till the next Sabbath after said full moon; and, to avoid all conformity with the Jews in this matter, if the fourteenth day of the first vernal full moon happen on a Sabbath, then the festival of Easter is deferred till the Sabbath following. The first vernal moon is that whose fourteenth day is either on the day of the vernal equinox, or the next fourteenth day after it. The vernal equinox, according to a decree of the council of Nice, is fixed to the 21st day of March; and therefore the first vernal moon is that whose fourteenth day falls upon the 21st of March, or the first fourteenth day after. Hence it appears that the next Sabbath after the fourteenth day of the vernal moon, which is called the Paschal term, is always Easter day. Good for you for_his_glory, TOB, you, and me are KJV Bible enthusiasts. IMO it still remains the most trustworthy and preserved Bible that we have. I don't pay any attention to the opponents and bad-mouthing of the KJV. Most of them are simply repeating something that they hear. If they want to know the Truth, they should go to the thread that TOB started :The Amazing Westcott & Hort Magic Marker Binge" on his #1 post, at the bottom, there is a web site that has some major errors of the Westcott & Hort translation of the Egyption based manuscripts, if they dare!

The word translated as "Easter" in Acts 12 is πασχα (Pascha). Everywhere else where "Pascha" appears in the Greek, it is translated as "Passover". The word "Pascha" in Greek is even derived from the Hebrew word "Pesach", meaning "Passover". I'm afraid there's no way to deny it. It's an incorrect translation.

Herod’s father was an Idumean who converted to Judaism. As Herod had favor with the Jews he was still clung to Rome and embraced Greco-Roman culture and religion.
 
This translation changes the original Greek and Hebrew nomenclature into modern nicknames. St. Peter becomes "Rocky," Mary Magdalene becomes "Maggie," Aaron becomes "Ron," Andronicus becomes "Andy" and Barabbas becomes "Barry."

I know that he was, but that doesn't negate what I said. adam Clarke's commentary says what is fact, its correct to be Passover.he posted the greek in the textus recipticus.
