day of Jesus' return not set in stone?

A couple of months back there was a sermon playing on the radio where the subject being taught was that God doesn't have a specific day in mind for Jesus' return and that when it happens depends on the attitude of believers.

I don't remember the exact verses cited to support this, but I do remember that the verse about Jesus not even knowing the day of His return was mentioned. And, the verse that talks about "hastening the day of the Lord's return" through prayer, specifically praying for the peace of Jerusalem if I remember correctly.

I'm not sure what to believe about the end times anymore these days, but this idea had never occurred to me before. And it kinda makes sense.

Thoughts?

Mar_13:32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

Most here know my views are partial preterist came for a strong dispensational pre trip background....
Ones views on ET are not unto salvation... For me the discussion is fun and interesting .... How we act and react to our brothers in the Lord is more important ...
We should do what we can to be ready for His return not so to avoid wrath but because He loves us

Here's what the bible says.

Matthew 24
36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.

The bible states that God does in fact have a day picked out and He's the only One who knows when it is.

Yeah, I don't think it matters what I believe about the end times anymore. It's not a salvational issue, and prophecies are honestly easier to understand after the thing they prophesy has already come to pass.

A lot of people say it could happen at any moment but I was thinking that's not necessarily true at this point in time because of the things that must occur before Jesus returns. Like peace in the mid east could really happen in the next 5 minutes. Unless God has planned to just to allow that to happen by snapping his fingers it doesn't seem likely.

I have to wonder if this knowledge has changed for Jesus now that He sets at His Father’s right hand. Eph 1:20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

I think the context in all cases behooves us to be ready for His appearing lest we be found wanting.

I've wondered that too, I think He probably does now.

I totally agree. One thing I may add is that we do not know the day or the hour but we, as Chistians, should be reading the scripture enough to know the season when the harvest is ripe. In other words, we know...it's close.

He'll return at the feast of trumpets, as Christ's return was foreshadowed by that feast. No man knowing the day or hour is because they started their month at the new moon, but most feasts were in the middle of the month when the start was determined two weeks earlier, so they knew the day. The feast of trumpets is the only one that began at the start of a month, so they did not know the day or hour of the sighting, and the start of the feast, but they knew when it was about to start.

So, what is Jesus telling us here? He's saying that by signs, just as the new month, you know when it's about to happen. Then... you WATCH for it, and get into position to wait.

Likewise, the return of Christ and the gathering of the elect is always expressed by the idea of trumpets sounding. And the bible indicates that's the time of year he was born, too. There's a set time for everything already mapped out.

First off, I don't believe in a pre-trib rapture, but even if it did exist, he isn't coming tonight, so live it up! (no, that's not what we should do, for we might die tonight, so be ready anyway-- just joking)

Both God and Jesus know the exact hour when Jesus is going to rapture the Church and when the Second Coming is going to be.

Hi questdriven

I think that the day of Jesus' return is set in stone and that only The Father knows which day and hour and minute it will be. When day one of the tribulation begins, Jesus, all of His Elect, all of the Holy angels and all the demonic angels will know the day of The Parousia. This is because the tribulation is an appointed number of days that will end with The Second Coming. The immediate concern really is when will day one of the tribulation begin because when it does all we will have to do is to count the days until Jesus' arrival. In the book of Daniel, Gabriel might have let the cat out of the bag when he said:

“I am going to tell you what will happen later in the time of wrath, because the vision concerns the appointed time of the end".

So the tribulation is "the appointed time of the end".

ap·point·ed
adjective: appointed
1. (of a time or place) decided on beforehand; designated.
"she arrived at the appointed time"
synonyms: scheduled, arranged, prearranged, specified, decided, agreed, determined, assigned, designated, allotted, set, fixed, chosen, established, settled, preordained, ordained, prescribed, decreed "at the appointed time"

Acts 17:31

31 because he has "fixed a day" on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

Rev 9:15

15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for "the hour", "the day", "the month", and "the year", were released to kill a third of mankind.

So it looks to me like there are specific "hours","days","months" and "years" that are "fixed" to occur at specifically preordained appointed times. Jesus said:

“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only".

Even though it has been around 2000 years since Jesus spoke these words and He has been sitting at The Right Hand of The Father, there is a reason why this statement is still true today. Jesus is our Savior. He is our High Priest in Heavens Temple. He has done everything He could possibly do to save as much of humanity as He could. Gabriel said that the appointed time of the end is the time of wrath. When this tribulation begins millions of people will die. Jesus, having been our intercessor since the garden of Eden, has a conflict of interest in being the One who "calls it". It will be The Father who gives the command when it is The Appointed Time and then "There will be no more delay". For sure Jesus knows the zone when it will start, the year and the month but that day and hour is set in place by The Father.

“It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority".

Just a heads up, don't confuse the Tribulation with the "day of the Lord", the latter being the wrath of the Lord and beforehand the wrath of Satan (c.f. revelation 12). The sum of the two consecutive events are 3.5 years, and the latter being one year. In a nutshell, the 1st four seals occur sometime before this, and may have been the source of the "7 year Tribulation" idea given that they actually occur before the Tribulation. Then the 5th seal is the Tribulation, the 6th is the heavenly signs, and the 7th seal is the start of the Day of the Lord, in which are seven trumpet and seven vial judgements before Christ comes back. The vials are nested inside the 7th trumpet and takes place in a very short time span, and the other trumpets are within that last year. The idea that this "day" takes a year can be found in various OT prophecies where the day of the Lord is considered a year, and also the day for a year idea in Ezekiel.

Hi Tim

My prophetic schematic is completely different from yours. It was imperative for me to define the phrase "the great and awesome day of the lord" because of Joel 2:31. I saw DCP bang his hand on his desk claiming that "the day of the Lord" is the one year period before Jesus' return. I think he gets this from Isaiah 34:8 "a year of recompense for the cause of Zion". I found something different. I'm dying to show it to you because it has a little bit of math involved with it but I don't think tonight would be the right time. It might leave a mark but it will prove beyond all reasonable doubt that the whole tribulation is 1335 days in duration. 1335 is the key that will unlock that old blood moon business.
