Differences Catholic & Protestant

misconceptions and different interpretations prevent truth and understanding

in an attempt to understand each other please correct any of my assertions regarding your beliefs

p) protestant
c) catholic

p) salvation is a one time event
c) salvation is a life long process

p) can be saved here and now
c) full salvation does occure until the hour of death

p) once salvation is attained it cannot be lost, it is final
c) here and now we only have the grace of justification and we are in a state of grace in union with Christ & grace that must be increased or will be lost, and can be lost by deadly sin

p) perseverance is automatic, nothing can be done to lose grace, perseverance, or salvation.
c) perseverance is by living works see Dead & Living works.

Dead & Living works:

(works of the law)

Refer to the works of the mosaic covenant

(works of the flesh)

Listed in Gal 5:19-21 & Eph 5:3-5
these cause the loss of grace and the blessing of salvation in the kingdom of God.

Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. eph 5:6

(dead works)

Works that are good in and of themselves but are not in union with Christ and grace and have effectiveness to accomplish perseverance unto eternal salvation!

Apart from Christ: NOTHING! Jn 15:5

(living works)

Supernatural good works (gifts of God) accomplished in union with Christ and empowered by His grace with perseverance to the end of our life unto eternal salvation!

With Christ & empowered by grace: ALL THINGS! Phil 4:13

(the grace of justification cannot be earned or accomplished by any works, it is the gift of God)

By union with Christ and His grace empowering living works we will:

Abide in Christ and bear fruit:
Jn 15:4

This actually is fruit.
And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”

So no fruit is not even this.

I believe being sealed in Christ by the Spirit or born from above is a judgment already made by God, not man, and is forever. The lamb of God has taken away their sin and in Him is no sin and such a person will not continue to sin.
Can one who has no sin be considered unrighteousness in any manner?

Greetings, Don

I'm a protestant (though I must say before I even start that the term "protestant" is terribly outdated and generally used only by Catholics. I'm not "protesting" anything. We moved on).

But I believe in C here.
p) can be saved here and now
c) full salvation does occure until the hour of death

I also believe in C here.

I am so opposed to this doctrine that I think it is one of the most evil things being taught in Christendom today. This is a Calvinist teaching, and does NOT represent all or even most "protestants."

do you believe this verse of scripture?

Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.

I believe those who have been sealed in Christ by the Spirit will choose not to sin. They have a new heart created in them by the Spirit. What flows out of such a heart won't be bad fruit. A good tree doesn't bear bad fruit.
Someone who claims to know Christ but does not do what He states is a liar as John writes.

But John, not me, wrote this. Clearly a refusal to sin.

No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.

Those differences are oversimplified and are not universal.

In Romans 10:5-8, Paul referred to Deuteronomy 30 as the word of faith that we proclaim in regard to proclaiming that the Mosaic Law is not too difficult for us to obey and that obedience to it brings life and a blessing while disobedience to it brings death and a curse, so choose life! Dead works are not the works that the Bible say lead to life but the ones in disobedience to the Mosaic Law that lead to death. In Romans 3:27, Paul contrasted a law of works with a law of faith, in Galatians 3:10-12, he contrasted the Book of the Law with “works of the law”, and in Romans 3:31 and Galatians 3:10-12, he said that our faith upholds the Mosaic Law in contrast with saying that “works of the law” are not of faith, so that phrase does not refer to the Mosaic Law, which is why it is not of faith. If the works that God instructed His children to obey are works that lead to death rather than life, then that would mean that God would be misleading His children and shouldn’t be trusted.

Lots more differences than views on salvation.

I'd mainly caution that the topic of salvation takes more than a few favorite verses to be able come to a settled conclusion on. I mean, even Protestants quibble about whether OSAS is a true doctrine or not. I've spent years on this very forum watching people have heated discussions about this, back when Catholicism itself was a banned topic.
