Does Your Child Know The Code?

Girl, 10, avoids abduction, stranger didn't know code word

+
Ajax - The 10-year-old Ontario girl not only managed to thwart the abduction attempt but was able to give police a description of the man, his vehicle, a woman sitting in the car and a partial license plate.
It happened on Monday around 3:30 p.m. after classes finished for the day at Applecroft Public School in Ajax, Ontario just east of Toronto. When the 10-year-old walked out of the building, she was met by a man she did not know. The man told her he was sent by her mother to pick her up. He then pointed to a car in the school's parking lot and a young woman was seated in the passenger side of the vehicle.
The girl and her family had a secret code word. She was told if someone was ever sent to pick her up, that person would know the word. So she asked the man what the code was. He gave her the code word. She told him he got it wrong.
The man then went back to his car and drove away. The girl went back into the school, reported the incident and police were called. Not only was the girl able to give Durham Regional Police officers a description of the car, the man and a vague description of the woman, but she attempted to memorize the license plate number. According to police, she got the numbers wrong but they are analyzing various permutations and combinations of the letters and numbers she gave them. Police believe it is only a matter of time before they identify the vehicle and the culprits.
Durham Regional Police officer David Selby told CityNews a female presence leads children to believe they are safe if they go with them. According to Selby, most children have strong female role models and trust them more than they would males.
Abductions by men who are accompanied by a woman are not unknown in Ontario. On April 8, 2009, eight-year-old Tori Stafford was led away from her Woodstock, Ontario school by Terri-Lyn McClintic and was later raped and murdered. McClintic and Michael Rafferty are currently serving life sentences for first-degree murder.
And in April 1992, Kristen French, 15, was kidnapped, held and later murdered by Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. Had Homolka not been in the car, French may not have approached the vehicle.
Police are looking for a white male with a medium build. He was unshaven and wore a grey hat, blue scarf and a green jacket. He also wore red and black high-up sneakers. The woman is in her late teens or early 20s, has long blonde hair and was wearing a purple and pink hat.
The car is described as a small blue-grey two-door with a dent on the rear bumper just to the left of the license plate.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Durham Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
