I am a fantasy writer, though I don't write Tolkien-esque sort of Fantasy-I write my own.
my first work is about an alien race that comes to earth (after their empire fell in their solar system) about 50 million years before man was created (this book fallows evolutions time line) after abolishing technology and embracing their "religion" (they worship a bunch of "star gods" who are actually infact just hyper evolved aliens)
bad things happen and most of them die and the story comes into our age where they have to adapt to our presence
I will publish my first book soon enough (not sure when) but it is a cool thing methinks.

You should read Genesis chapter 6 along with some of the early beliefs of what this chapter means, you may find some interesting similarities to what you are talking about ;)

yeah the idea of deity did play a big part in inspiration-these star gods-aren't God, they are "imperfect beings created by imperfect beings" as they tell one of the characters
they actually talk about human religion, calling it "an odd thing in our world" though they claim to have created man-most of the aliens are skeptical (humans have no idea)
