Geocaching

Who's heard of geocaching? Does anyone do it? I just found out about this yesterday, and today after church I set out with our dog Murphy and made my first find. Very cool.

For those interested but don't know, people place geocaches all over the world. There are millions of them hidden and likely some right under your noses without you knowing it. When you download the app, you can see roughly where they are hidden all over the world and near by. So you go (however you want) to that area. When you're within 30 feet of the item, the app notifies you, and then your job is to find it. They can be boxes of all sizes. The one I found was like an old camera film container.

Whatever it is, you open it up and sign the sheet where other people have signed. There are also little objects that you can take and replace with your own. And then you register in the app on your phone that you found it and send a thank you to the person who hid it. There are graduated hints if you can't find it, but it's fun to keep looking without them. The one I found was hidden about 18 months ago and had about 25 people who found it before me.

If you like community-based puzzles, you might really like this! It's neat thinking this is happening all over the world.

Never heard of this.

But it sounds almost like the latest Pokemon game.

Can you geocash a lost soul?

I did it for a brief while as there was GPS on an old Palm Pilot I had, and a big public park a block from my old apartment. Hid stuff in an old surplus green ammo can. It was fun unitl some kids stole the whole can.

Geocaching has actually been around since before gps. I know of several in Colorado, but its been years since I've cracked one open.

It's pretty popular in my area where there is plentiful, beautiful, and open public lands. For those of us who love the outdoors, it is an excuse to get out.

Funny how there is a subculture doing this kind of thing all around without you being aware if it. I just happened to see someone post a map of these "boxes" all over my area, and I was intrigued. I love puzzles that make you work, and it's cool to head out with my dog. It's good exercise for me and gives her some running around time.

KevinK that's a bummer that it got stolen. There must be others around you. Go get em!

...I didn't know that.

Yep, and it was done with maps. You had to know someone who was into it, to be able to get a map for locations. I was lucky that way. I like to leave bic lighters in them because that's really useful in the mtns.

There was one inside a cave we went to.

Sssssh, it's supposed to be a secret you know :p You are supposed to get the caches without the mugglers noticing anything.

I'm a geocacher. Same nick as in here :) Feel free to add me , I barely have any geocaching friends :p

You have waaaaaaay too much time on your hands......

It's not that hard if you want to do it.

In a way I do that. Look up old local history and if possible find it. I use topos.no map but arial imagery used to make a map.it helps I know my county and can make out terrain features.
