Yesterday, I saw a political ad by Joe Biden where he said that, if elected, on day 1 he would order a nationwide mask mandate. He was not wearing a mask when he recorded the ad so does that mean that it won't really be necessary to wear a mask until January 20? How does he know that masks would be of any value four months from now?

Now, one might ask if he was alone and social distancing when he recorded the ad. A valid question. Whether or not Joe Biden was alone or exercising adequate social distancing, the camera angle doesn’t prove one way or the other and be that as it may, it is really a moot point.

Six weeks ago, on or about August 13, Joe Biden publicly declared, “Every single American should be wearing a mask when they’re outside for the next three months at a minimum.” (August 13, 2020, Christina Wilkie, CNBC)

He also reportedly said, "Let's institute a mask mandate nationwide starting immediately, and we will save lives." Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris added, “That's what real leadership looks like. We just witnessed real leadership, which is Joe Biden said, that as a nation, we should all be wearing a mask for the next three months because it will save lives." (August 14, Grace Segers, Bo Erickson, CBS News)

Do Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris need a government mandate requiring them to do what they believe is the right thing to do? True leadership leads by example. Someone once told me, “The best leaders are those who are willing to go where they expect others to follow.” If they truly believe what they are preaching, at the very least, they personally would have been wearing masks for the past six weeks at all times outside of their homes without exception. But, clearly this is not what they have been doing.

Then there's the Nancy Pelosi incident with the hair salon. The salon was in lockdown as ordered by the state yet, although she didn't come out and say it directly, Ms. Pelosi apparently felt she was more special than the rest of society and it was okay for her to violate the law and get her hair done at the closed salon. Is she better than the rest of society? Let's not forget about the Mayor of Chicago earlier this spring who also visited a locked down salon to get her hair done. In her case, she did in fact say it directly that she was more important. These two hypocritical incidents were blatant insults to their supporters and the country as a whole.

I see a similar hypocrisy with those that promote national health care, helping the homeless, helping the poor, etc. If we truly believe we should be donating more of our income and/or time toward these things then what is stopping us from doing so now? Do we give all we can or do we only give enough to make us feel good about it? Do we need a government mandate to require it of us?
