Since the moment we first came to Christ, there has been an updraft of the Holy Spirit, a constant drawing from God lifting us upward toward the fullness of His Presence.
Man was created in the image and likeness of God. (Gen 1:26)
The exact demonstration of that likeness was provided by Jesus on the mount of transfiguration.
Mat 17:2 Jesus "
... was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light."
While many do not respond to the call, that verse describes what all of mankind is called to be.
Peter described our goal as to "
..become partakers of the divine nature." (2Pe 1:4)
And Paul taught that the purpose of the ministries of the church is to guide believers to the goal of attaining the "fullness"** of Christ.
Eph 4:11-13 (RSV)
And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness** of Christ;
** Scripture provides a clarification of the word, "fullness.: (Greek: "Pleroma", πλήρωμα)
Col 1:19 (RSV)
For in (Jesus) all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
Col 2:9 (RSV)
For in (Jesus) the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
Of course we cannot become gods by
nature, that is, having the same divine
essence as God, because our nature/essence is that of a creature. It is impossible for creation to change its essence from creature to divinity. But it is God's will that we fully participate in His uncreated "energies." (As in the power of his grace by which He created heaven and earth; by which He spoke through the prophets; by which the Son of God was conceived in the Virgin's womb without seed; by which the Son of Man rose from the grave on the third day....) It is His will that we become perfect images (icons), exact replicas of Jesus in every aspect except having a divine nature/essence.
Paul said that we, the church, "
...are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones." (Eph 5:30 NKJV) He said that, as a husband and wife become one flesh, so the church, in a profound mystery, becomes one flesh with Christ. (Eph 5:31-32)
No, we are not called into relationship with God through Christ
ONLY to become better morally or
ONLY so that we can "go to heaven instead of hell". We are called to be the exact image and likeness of God, of which Jesus is the prototype. That was God's original purpose in creating mankind in
His image and likeness and God will bring His will and purpose to fruition in the saints when Jesus comes to rule forever. He's already begun the process; it starts at the moment one is born again.
that's how I see it.
