Matthew 5:27-28
New King James Version

Adultery in the Heart

27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

My first reaction to this is "thought police".
Hey I haven't committed the act yet. I just had a wicked thought. That's all.

And sexist. Can't wives have wicked thoughts about men who are married to someone else? Yes it happens.

Ok, now if I am really trying to see the constructive view of this verse, I will suggest that God wants us to strive for pure thoughts. Fair enough. But why didn't Matthew write this, in the first place?

We need to purify our desires.
And only a saviour can save us from impure thoughts.
We need to be transformed.
For some of us, it doesn't happen overnight. It's gradual.

This was revolutionary at the time. The Jews were just focussed on the law. To be told that intention was just as important as being caught doing the wrong thing, was shocking. Who is this Jesus character? Does He think he is God or something? How dare he say that!

My view is that (Matt. 5-7) are the laws of the Kingdom. That Kingdom is what was being offered to Israel, as promised in the Old Testament.

They definitely are more strict than the Law of Moses. They do reach to the intent of the heart. These are not in place now as Israel rejected the King.

They will be in place, I believe, when the Millennium reign of Christ begins on earth. (Rev. 11:15) (20:4-6)
