It's going to be a little confusing for those hearing this for the first time.
A few years ago I did some studying on church history and, I must say, it was very rewarding.
Here's a synopsis so it'll be easier to follow along:
Peter was one of the most important persons in establishing Christianity.
He eventually stayed in Rome and was ONE OF THE POPES.
Yes, there was more than one Pope.
Pope was an honorary title that was given to the most important Bishops of the time.
Bishops were mentioned in the NT...I leave that to the speakers.
The Bishops of the most important areas were those of:
ROME
ANTIOCH
JERUSALEM
CONSTANTINOPLE
ALEXANDRIA
5 in all.
It so happened that when there was a question regarding something important, the other Popes turned to Peter for advice because he knew Jesus personally and was very respected, so Rome became the head of the church - which was called the Catholic or universal church at the time (and still is).
At some point, it was decided that there should be only ONE Pope with total authority.
I believe it was after the 6th century, but I'm not sure and hope the speakers mention this.
I'm posting this because there's just too much misunderstanding between Catholics and Protestants,,,
on either side.
We should be more brotherly in Christ.
