Should We Feed the Homeless?

The city commission voted Oct. 22 in favor of an ordinance that limits where outdoor feeding sites can be located, requires the permission of property owners and says the groups have to provide portable toilets, the Sun-Sentinel reported. The law took effect last Friday.

The new ordinance is part of a broader effort to deal with homeless people. The city has also made it illegal to sleep in public places downtown and to beg for money at major intersections.

Translation: Homeless people aren't allowed to gather anywhere where we might see them. If we hide the problem, maybe it will go away.

rollo is unaware this isn't new in florida nor the us. in Orlando this law is seldom enforced. I know a cop there and he has arrested a few for that crime of being homeless and said he hates that law and also only does it where he must. he says its a pointless law that doesnt really solve the problem ie no homeless in areas where the wealthy can see them or anyone that has a problem. its sad.

We're living in days where they call good evil, and evil good. :shame
this isn't new. back in the 60's and prior and up to the 90s they were forced by the cops to leave, they weren't arrested but were cuffed and taken out of town. they got the hint and walked on thru.

yup. its likely a law similar to the ones in Orlando, Daytona. the reason for that is because the homeless use the homeowners bushes as a latrine. so rather then simply arrest the offender they ban feeding them unless its in a park. I understand why in part. so then why not make a rule where those that feed homeless in mass such as church on the street must provide a simple porta pottie? but that would make sense. cant have that.

James 2:15-17 ESV
If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

Whether it's rarely enforced or not, the fact that this ordinance was conceived of, let alone passed, speaks to the attitude of civic leaders towards people who don't enhance the beauty of their streets. This blight has to go! :rollingpin

I know a guy who's dedicated his life outside of work to helping the homeless, and he strongly discourages giving them money. Assisting them in getting to good organizations is much more effective, in his opinion. That said, it's hard to find the flaw in giving them food that can't be exchanged for vices.

It looks like there will be a little more work that needs to be done on our part but we need to study the law and find a way to make an impact within it. These things are meant to discourage us but we cannot allow it to stop us.

I don't give a rip about man's laws...it's God's laws I follow and if I see a fellow human being hungry I'm gonna feed him. Jesus orders us to do so and I fear Jesus more than any man! How about them apples?

I know this is going to sound messed up but I actually look forward to being arrested and killed for following God's laws. I'd be in good company too! Saint Paul, Saint Peter, John the Baptist to name some...

One of the wonderful things about my church is that they feed people on Tuesdays and Thursdays and give away food on Thursdays.
The grocery stores in the area help very much.
The people who come through our doors would not be welcome in some other churches.
There are many churches in my county that help the poor.
I lived in a highly populated county for 23 years and never saw anyone reaching out to help the poor.
And there were plenty of poor people.

The picture above says it all.
If we care, we will help, somehow, some way.
Even a little bit, God sees it and will bless you.

(Romans 13:1-2) I am with you as a last resort with no other options but if there are ways to get the job done without being arrested, you can still continue to be a blessing. After being arrested that is one less person around feeding those that are in need.

You have a good point. Our church has to follow a few simple laws when we feed homeless people, so we do.

That makes sense. As you can tell I have a tendency to just charge in like Braveheart.
I need to balance my "enthusiasm" with wisdom.

Instead of Churches closing their doors and looking the other way they need to come together as the body of Christ they are suppose to be and devise some plans on helping those in need. There are many that live on the streets because of life circumstances and can not even get a job because they have no physical address or phone number. The government just makes it harder for those who want to help themselves, but can't for technicalities that stop them.
