Sun into Darkness, Moon into Blood.

This has been quoted word for word from the old testament in the new testament in Acts 2. My question is, is this a sign for teh end of days? Or was this when Jesus arose from being dead?

17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: 19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come: 21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

So, will the sun go dark and moon to blood before Jesus comes for his second coming?

This is from my study Bible (Macarthur). I skipped some of it.

2:17 last days. This phrase refers to the present era of redemptive history from the first coming of Christ (Hebrews 1:2, 1 Peter 1:20, 1 john 2:18) to His return.

2:17-18 Dreams, Prophecy, Wonders, signs (I'll skip this part unless you really want to know)

2:19 Blood...Fire...Vapor of Smoke. These phenomena are all connected with events surrounding Christ's second coming and signal the establishment of the earthly kingdom: Blood (Revelation 6:8, Revelation 8:7-8, Revelation 9:15, Revelation 14:20, Revelation 16:3); Fire (Revelation 8:5, Revelation 8:7-8, Revelation 8:10); and Smoke Revelation 9:2-3, Revelation 9:17-18, Revelation 18:9, Revelation 18:18)

2:20 Sunn...Darkness...Moon into blood. CF. Matthew 24:29-30;...Day of the Lord...The day of the Lord will come with the return of Jesus Christ (cf. 2 Thessalonians 2:2, Revelation 19:11-15)

err, so does this mean all this will happen in the last days, before Jesus' second coming?

Yes it did happen in the "last days". Hebrews 1:1-2 tells us the "last days" were in the first century. All the events Peter described happened and most can be found in the book of Acts.

Verse 20 is figurative language found numerous times in the OT. It is not literal language. Heavenly bodies are often used to symbolize nations and Kingdoms. What verse 20 is describing is the dissolution of the Mosaic economy/Old Covenant. Tht occured in the "last days".

Read Is 13 for an example. Pay particular notice to verse 10.

MacArthur is great, but his eschatology is way off.

Julian:

If you are still looking at this thread, the answer is BOTH. Such an astronomical phenomenon happened at Christ's death, but will again in the end times. In addition, if you read the "sun-moon" passages carefully, each one is describing something different suggesting multiple events.

Prophecy oftentimes has multiple fulfillments.

So I dont gotta worry till the usn goes dark and teh moon into blood?

Julian

I would not wait on the sun going dark and the moon turing red.

My reading shows that to be about 3 1/2 years after the rapture.

Ok then, LOL, I will do more research int it. Don't worry, I wanna come up with ya guys, and right now I am! LOL.

This language is not to be taken literally. Is. 13 describes the destruction of Babylon by the Medes 2500 years ago, it is described using simialar language:

Isa 13:10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

The judgment on Egypt was similarly described:

Ez.32:7 And when I shall extinguish thee, I will cover the heavens, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give its light.
8 All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord Jehovah.

And you were there and know first hand these things didn't happen.

Julian

You stay with the literal.

God dose not write fiction, man dose.

And you were there and know first hand these things didn't happen.

Sad thing is, I think you are serious. Right?

I guess this literally happened to Edom also:

Is. 34: 4 And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll; and all their host shall fade away, as the leaf fadeth from off the vine, and as a fading leaf from the fig-tree.

Do you not allow the use of apocalytic/figurative language in the Bible?

Nahum 1
1 The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
2 Jehovah is a jealous God and avengeth; Jehovah avengeth and is full of wrath; Jehovah taketh vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.
5 The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt; and the earth is upheaved at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.

I love all those who say they take the Bible literally, then deny the simplest of words:

Rev 1:1 A Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave to Him to declare to His servants things which must shortly come to pass. And He signified it by sending His angel to His servant John,

Rev 1:3 Blessed is the one who reads and hears the Words of this prophecy, and the ones keeping the things written in it, for the time is near.

All of the sudden literalism is thrown out the window.

You will find this is still going to happen.

Rev.6:12-16

All that is said will happen.

Compared to eternity how long is 2000 years?

yours and Gods time table aren't the same.
