The False vs True Gift Of Tongues

The gift is for a purpose just like all the others from the Holy Spirit and not just blabbing unintelligent with no understading, it had to be able to communicate the gospel not just nonsense noises.

Isaiah 66:18
For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.

Acts 2:4-8
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

Acts 2:11
Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

1 Corinthians 14:23
If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

The gift of tongues was the many languages that were there at the time of the different nations, so it was given for this purpose, and it has been distorted with the babbling many use today.

The way I see it, the gift of tongue is the talent of communicating and preaching, it's the confidence, the courage and the skill to speak out what God has put on your mind. When God appeared to Moses in a glowing bush and tasked him to deliver Israel from the Egyptians, Moses was intimidated and anxious, he thought he was tongue-tied, that he didn't have this "gift of tongue" to do the job, he was not a good orator, God picked the wrong man, He should send somebody else. God did send Aaron his brother to assist him, but God didn't take this as an excuse. Ultimately, Aaron spoke to the Israelites as Moses's spokesman, but Moses must face the Pharoah and relay God's message to him.

Then Moses said to the Lord, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”So the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord? Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say.” But he said, “O my Lord, please send by the hand of whomever else You may send.” So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses, and He said: “Is not Aaron the Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well. And look, he is also coming out to meet you. When he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. (Ex. 4:10-14)

The problem we face today is that people are coaxed into babbling if not outright possession by 'unclean spirits', to 'prove' themselves, and of course this is not of God to say the least..

Their gibberish is irritating and meaningless, especially in form of repetitive chanting.

There's one denomination I know of that really pushes speaking in tongues as a means of proof of having received the Holy Spirit.

This is the part that I can't agree with.

I agree with that denomination in every other way.

Can you provide a passage which mentions speaking in tongues to support that? That seems to me to simply have the ability to be a good communicator, which anyone can posses or work at on their own.

What the Bible shows is that the gift of tongues is the supernatural ability to speak in a language unknown to the speaker (Acts 2).

There’s no bible passage that mandates this supernatural ability must be repeated in every congregation. Later in Acts, when a new believer was baptized, they immediately praised god in their native tongue when they emerged out of water.

I probably never came to a head on this subject.

When looking at this years ago, on youtube, there were those who practice Kundalini Yoga.

They babbled as Well- I think it was called releasing the serpent within.

So if unbelievers practiced the same thing I questioned could it be of God?

.......

For myself I know the Bible can be a 👅 tongue I do not understand. Yet when God reveals understanding it has meaning.

Spiritual gifts as far as I know were never meant to build up a believer but to uplift, teach, and encourage others.

Yet my mom in her own testimony said She was singing and tongues came out of her.

And my sister in a lock- in overnight fast I believe said she spoke in tongues once.

My mother also waking up from a dream saying she believe she spoke in what sounded like some Egyptian language.

Maybe there are just special experiences people have...IDK

There is a gift of communicating and preaching , not necessarily speaking in tongues .

Ephesians 4
1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

That is a problem.
The gift of tongues is just that, a gift from God...and can't be taught or coaxed.
Some receive multiple "tongues" or in this case, languages they can speak in.
But that kind of tongues is in addition to the kind of tongues every believer receives after receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Spiritual gifts as far as I know were never meant to build up a believer but to uplift, teach, and encourage others.
As a believer I have been encouraged by the knowledge that I have been blessed with Gifts of the Holy Spirit .
But am I above any other Christian , no .
The empowerment through the Holy Spirit is there for all Christians but do they accept it .
The more Gifts you are given the more responsibility you will have . Does your mission as a Christian increase , yes it does . God is there to help us with our increased responsibility .

So are you saying that if one does not speak in tongues (ecstatic language)they have not received the gift of the Holyghost?

My brother is a minister He asked for the gift of tongues didnt receive ..so He did not receive the gift of the Holy Ghost?

Speaking in foreign language is a gift, speaking gibberish is demonic.
Speaking in tongues in a language unknown to you as the Holy Spirit gives the utterance is a Gift of the Holy Spirit .

Speaking in a foreign language is something you can learn .

I don’t see how “You don’t know what you’re talking about” is a gift. Parroting something you heard mindlessly is one thing, speaking aloud eloquently with confidence and understanding is another.

I don’t see how “You don’t know what you’re talking about” is a gift.
This is what took place in the second chapter of Acts , they that were filled with the Holy Spirit spoke and knew not what they said but those who understood and spoke the languages knew .

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

Acts 19:1-6, Paul at Ephesus. The local disciples only knew John the Baptist before. Paul baptized them in the name of Christ, laid hand on them, they received the Holy Spirit, and “they spoke with tongues and prophesied.”
Okay, but how does that support your statement:

"Later in Acts, when a new believer was baptized, they immediately praised god in their native tongue when they emerged out of water."

First, there is nothing in the passage to suggest they spoke in their native tongue(s). Verse 6 clearly states "they began speaking in tongues," which, going back to my original point, is only ever defined as a supernatural gift of the Holy Spirit to speak in a language unknown to the speaker. Second, it wasn't immediately after they were baptized, but rather "when Paul had laid his hands on them," not that that really matters; it just doesn't support your assertion.
