The First Coming of Jesus Christ, YHWH

“13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord (Yahweh) their God (Elohim). 17 He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord (Yahweh).” (Luke chapter 1)

Here we have the birth of the Prophet, John “The Baptist”, who was sent to proclaim the First Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

John here has in mind, the passage from the Old Testament Prophet, Malachi;
“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the Coming of the Great and Dreadful Day of Yahweh. And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.” (chapter 4:5-6)

Clearly, The Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, is The Coming of Yahweh. There can be no doubt about this, with Luke referring directly to the passage in Malachi, as fulfilment in The Coming of Jesus Christ.

In verse 17, this is even clearer. “He (John), will go before Him (YHWH, Jesus Christ)”, and, “to make ready a people prepared for the Lord (YHWH, Jesus Christ).”

Some, who oppose the Bible Teaching, that Jesus Christ IS YHWH, and coequal with God the Father, have tried to weaken this reference in Luke, by arguing, that the “before Him”, cannot refer to Jesus Christ, as He has not been mentioned before this, in this passage. It is very clear from the opening verses of this Gospel, that Luke is writing historically, as is the entire New Testament. Luke is giving his Account of what took place before, during, and after, the Birth of Jesus Christ. It is abundantly clear from all who reads the words in the passage, 13-17, that Jesus Christ is the main Subject, and, that John is referring to Him, before Whom, he is the Fore-runner.

Further, in the same chapter, Luke tells us;

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; For you will go before the Face of the Lord to prepare His Ways, to give knowledge of salvation to His people By the remission of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God, With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace. So the child grew and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel” (Luke 1:76-80)

Here we have another Prophecy in the Old Testament, from the Book of Isaiah, that is directly related to the First Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the Way of the LORD; Make straight in the desert A Highway for our God” (Isaiah 40:3)

In this verse, we find the Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, where He is clearly called, both. Yahweh, and Elohim.
We also have the Four Gospels, who are very clear, that the Coming of Jesus Christ, is the Coming of Yahweh. Not God the Father, but the Lord Jesus Christ.

“for this is he having been spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “A voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the LORD, Make His paths straight.” (Matthew 3:3)

“A beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, Son of God. As it has been written in the Prophets: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your Way before You. A voice of one calling in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the LORD, Make His paths straight.” (Mark 1:1-3)

“As it has been written in the scroll of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the LORD, Make His paths straight; Every valley will be filled, And every mountain and hill will be made low, And the crooked will become straightness, And the rough become smooth ways; And all flesh will see the Salvation of God.” (Luke 3:4-6)

“He said, “I [am] a voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the LORD, as Isaiah the prophet said” (John 1:23)

I each case, there can be no doubt, that Yahweh is meant. Not someone who “represents” Yahweh, But, Yahweh Himself, as Jesus Christ, Who is the Eternal I am, in the Eternal Godhead.

We also read in Isaiah, where we have Yahweh, Jesus Christ, as the Speaker, Who says, of His own Coming.
“Draw near to Me, hearken to this; in the beginning I did not speak in secret, from the time it was, there was I, and now, the Lord God has sent Me, and His Spirit” (48:16)

This is God the Father, Sending Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, which is clearly taught in the New Testament.
This is not the Prophet Isaiah who is speaking, nor any other human, as these words are clear;

In verse 3, “I have declared the former things from the beginning”, and verse 5, “I have even from the beginning declared it to you”. In verse 12 and 13 the Speaker says, “Listen to Me, O Jacob and Israel, My called; I am He, I am the First, I also am the Last. My hand has also laid the foundation of the earth, and My right hand spread out the heavens”. In verse 15 we read, “I, even I have spoken, yes, and I have called him”. In the very next verse, we read, “Thus says Yahweh, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: “I am Yahweh your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you by the way you should go”.

Other passages in Isaiah also to this in chapter 48.

In Isaiah 41:4, we read, “Who has performed and done this, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am He”. And, 44:6, “Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god

Only One Who is Himself Yahweh, could have Spoken these Words.

It can be only because of a persons personal theology, or Christology, like the false cults, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, etc, that such clear Bible Testimony on Who Jesus Christ, really IS, can be rejected or disputed. The Bible is very clear on the fact, that Jesus Christ, as the Father, and Holy Spirit, is Yahweh, Almighty God.

Greetings SolaScriptura,
Jesus Christ, Who is the Eternal I am, in the Eternal Godhead.
I prefer the translation of Exodus 3:14 as "I will be".
The Bible is very clear on the fact, that Jesus Christ, as the Father, and Holy Spirit, is Yahweh, Almighty God.
There is One God, Yahweh, God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ is a human, now exalted to sit at the right hand of God in God the Father's Throne, and Jesus is the Son of God by birth, character and resurrection.

Kind regards
Trevor

Greetings again SolaScriptura,

Matthew 6:9 (KJV): After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

John 12:27–28 (KJV): 27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. 28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

John 17:1–6 (KJV): 1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. 6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

Kind regards

The angel told Elizabeth that John would come in the spirit and power of Elijah.
And Jesus, referring to John, had said Elijah had already come.
Jesus referred to John as Elijah because John had come in the spirit and power of Elijah.
So, why can’t Jesus be referred to as YAHWAH if he had come in the spirit and power of YAHWAH?

Answer that.

Greetings LeviR,
So, why can’t Jesus be referred to as YAHWAH if he had come in the spirit and power of YAHWAH?
Answer that.
I am not sure if you are directing your comment and question to me or SolaScriptura. We all need to reconcile the verses that SolaScriptura quoted and the ones that I have quoted. I can agree in part with your suggestion, but I do not consider that this is the complete answer. Instead, I consider that Jesus is the major development of the Yahweh Name.

Kind regards

The First Coming of Jesus Christ, YHWH

Jesus is LORD; YHWH

Jesus referred to John as Elijah because John had come in the spirit and power of Elijah.
This is the closest to a contradiction in Scripture because Jesus is quoted as saying His cousin John the Baptist is not Elijah.

Jesus calls John “Elijah” because John came in Elijah’s spirit and power. John denies being Elijah because he is not Elijah the man.

No contradiction — just two different questions being answered.
