The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

Hey All,
The Holy Spirit is mentioned in the Old Testament.

Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

I would offer that the Spirit of God is the Holy Spirit. (If you want to deny this because it does not specify "the Holy Spirit," I won't argue. I just disagree.)

Genesis 41:38-39 And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:

The Spirit of God was in Joseph. Not around, not close by, in.

Exodus 31:1-3 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah:
And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, (Also reinforced in
Ex. 35:30-31)

Bezaleel was filled with the Spirit of God, and given the spiritual gifts of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and workmanship. The Holy Spirit gives these gifts.

Nehemiah 9:19-20 Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.
Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.

The spirit the children of Israel was given instructed them, and nouished them.

Psalms 51:11
Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

David believed he had the Holy Spirit with him. This psalm ask God to not remove Him from David.

Isaiah 63:9-11 In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.
But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?

So Moses was aware of the Holy Spirit; as he wrote of Him. Isaiah says the Holy Spirit was put within Moses. When the children of Israel rebelled, it vexed the holy Spirit. Vexed means angered, or enraged, or furiated.

There may be other examples. But I believe I have offered enough to draw a conclusion.

The Holy Spirit is not a New Testament concept. The personal indwelling can be found in the Old Testament.

I just thought this was pretty cool.

Keep walking everybody.
May God bless,

Scriptures that refer the Holy Spirit as being God in the OT and NT

Psalms 139:7, 8; Zechariah 4:6; Isaiah 40:13 John 14:17; 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:10, 11; Luke 1:35; Ephesians 4:4-6; Romans 5:5; 1 Corinthians 6:19; Ephesians 1:13; 1 Thessalonians 1:5; Titus 3:5; 2 Peter 1:21; Jude 1:20

This has the potential to be a very good study.

IMHO the Holy Spirit on someone still gives the potential for spiritual gifts.

Galatians 4:4 kjv
4. But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5. To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Now this bumps up against the New Testament, but Jesus came under the law.

While the Holy Spirit worked in the Old Trstament the minds and hearts of Prophets were not as involved as the New Testament. I will wait till later to go on with the discussion.

Hey All,
That would be an outstanding study. I would love to see the gifts of the Holy Spirit being exercised. We know that Abraham, for example had the gift of faith when he took Isaac to be sacrificed. Daniel had this gift as well. What about the other gifts? Please pursue this.

Keep walking everybody.
May God bless,

Let’s start here
2 kings 4:34 kjv
34. And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm .
35. Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

There is much more that happened about this incident. Communication with God etc.

Note there were several physical things that went along with the miracle of raising the dead. Remember too that Jesus (who came under the law) spat on the ground and put mud in the eyes of a blind man.

There were works of the law. I do not know of a clinic that warms the dead by warming bodies. I would say that reading the whole story, this was spiritual. The exact same as New Testament? No. Very similar? Yes.

Start. A words of knowledge next?

I decided to detour before the word of knowledge.

John the Baptist might have to come first.
John the Baptist was super special. Of John Jesus Sait:
Luke 7:28 kjv
28. For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
29. And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
30. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

Luke 1:15 kjv
15. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

Jesus was born under the law and had the Holy Spirit descend on him and remain (after he was older), John tells us this.

So we will try and not look at the use of post Pentecost spiritsu gifts (though not that much difference).

What is still a mystery about John the Baptist is his inner Holy Ghost was not connected to his carnal mind. This can be another thread.

So do we want to list the spiritual gifts, and then go down the list in the Old Testament? This is my first organized attempt.

Oh well I ask then do it myself.
1 Corinthians 12:8 kjv
8. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9. To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10. To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

Then we can organize the Old Testament officers. (Here I will need help)
The OT changed over time (Give us a King)

The gentiles were ignorant about God’s order of leadership, thus the following:

1 Corinthians 12:28 kjv
28. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

The Old Testaments lists may be slightly different?

Seems like you guys are only interested in spectacular gifts like tongues and stuff in Acts.

Exo 31:1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2 "See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship . . .

Exo 28:3 So you shall speak to all who are gifted artisans, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron's garments, . . . .

All these other "artisans" has the same Spirit of God for all manner of workmanship. Why not try to look for a God given and God honoring gift that is practical, rather than one that will make you cool?

Let’s do word of knowledge and word of wisdom.

One example could be a Prophet telling knowledge to a King. A Prophet telling a King what he should do about the knowledge he was already given.

These were not advice based on rumors or carnal reasoning, but correctness straight from God.

Which are basically the examples in the first post. You done good.

The first post is about knowledge wisdom understanding from God.

But yes maybe Joseph telling Pharoah about the coming famine was a little more spectacular, but the physical and spectacular happened in Egypt. We do not wait for Acts to see supernatural.
