I keep seeing confusion by some on what the breath of life means with how God breathed into Adam's nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul.
Heb 4:12
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
KJV
The soul and spirit are often confused with each other, but in reality they are separate things, yet permanently connected together. The joints and marrow is about the flesh body which one's soul with spirit inhabits while alive here on earth.
In Ecclesiastes 12:5-7, we are shown that when the flesh body dies, the "silver cord" being loosed, it goes back to the earthly elements where it came from, but our spirit goes back to God Who gave it. Some confuse that "spirit" there with a life-giving force that God gives all living things, animals, plants, insects, etc. That is not the 'spirit' that is meant there.
In 2 Corinthians 5, Apostle Paul revealed that if our earthly house (flesh) were dissolved, we still have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Paul was pointing to the "spiritual body" that he had covered back in the 1 Corinthians 15 chapter. So by the time one read this in 2 Cor.5, they should have understood that point. And Paul was speaking of this other house from God not made with hands, in the PRESENT TENSE, like we already have it.
And we do already have that spirit body dwelling inside our flesh today, as it is about that "spirit" mentioned in Ecclesiastes 12:5-7. Our soul is attached to it, which Jesus revealed that only God can kill our soul, as it does not die with our flesh (Matthew 10:28).
This is why per 1 Peter 3 and 1 Peter 4, that Jesus at His resurrection went an preached The Gospel to the "spirits in prison", which actually were those who had died back to the flood of Noah's day. That Jesus would do that at His 1st coming was actually Old Testament prophecy in Isaiah 42:7, about releasing the prisoners who sat in darkness in the prison house, i.e., Satan's prison house in the heavenly dimension. Then 1 Peter 4 confirms that The Gospel was preached to the "dead"...
1 Peter 4:6
6 For, for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
KJV
Per God's Word then, depending on which dimension of existence you are in, for there are 2 different ones written of in God's Word, if in this earthly dimension your type body is a flesh body for your soul-spirit to dwell in. If you are in the heavenly dimension, your spirit body is the type body that manifests in the heavenly dimension with your soul (person). It is actually that simple.
Summary:
The idea that our soul is of fleshy matter is from the old Jewish traditions that did not have understanding in The New Testament Scriptures. That is what the false 'dead in the ground' theory is based upon. They believe that our soul actually dies when our flesh dies, and our soul with the flesh has to be raised from the dead together. Their superstitious idea opposes what Lord Jesus taught about the soul in Matthew 10:28.
When our flesh body dies, our soul with attached spirit body, leaves the flesh, and goes back to God in the heavenly dimension. There are 2 dimensions of existence written of in God's Word, this earthly one we live in, and the heavenly one where God and the angels live, and where the spirits of those who died are. Our loved ones that have died are there with Jesus, as Apostle Paul also showed in that 2 Corinthians 5 chapter, for to be absent from the body is to be present with The Lord, Paul says.
