I read somewhere that violence against women is a result of: (relatively) low status of women and men trying to assert their dominance. The feminists, of course, focus on the patriarchy and such, and there is something to that. I mean, in a Christian marriage, Christ is the real head of the unit and then the husband is the leader. No big deal, certainly doesn't (I think) lead to violence, but...
...even now, the secular culture wants men to be smarter, make more money, be in control, etc. Factor in personal stuff, like mental issues, drug and alcohol abuse, personal insecurities, relationship issues, jealousy, plus secular cultural stuff, and you have...Trouble (note the capital T). Low status of women works on a number of levels. It makes "gettin' uppity" dangerous and effectively silences them, since low status people really don't matter. Lack of financial resouraces helps keep abusive marriages together because, where do you go? Where do the kids go?
So...yeah. "The personal is political." I don't think you can look at violence against women and condemn it (which we should, obviously) without putting things into proper context. Of course, from a Christian perspective, this is one more way Satan ruins peoples' lives, one more way sin has marred humanity.
