'From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days. On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us. '

Paul and Silas were looking for a place to pray, but instead they found a group of women gathered there who were ready to hear the message that God had given Paul. Some of our divine appointments will come packaged as interruptions or inconveniences. It is important to be flexible and to yield to the Lord’s will and schedule, because the Lord has some divine appointments in store. These surprise appointments can serve to keep us dependent on Him and yielded to the Holy Spirit rather than ourselves and our own plans.

Another benefit to being open to this divine interruption is that God had a blessing in store for them. Lydia offered them a place to stay. Sometimes these “interruptions” end up being blessings. That is an encouraging and exciting way to look at these perceived interruptions! If we look at them as blessings, we will be more willing to yield to them.

The divine interruptions that the Lord allows can also serve to keep us from trusting so much in our “routine” and religious practices that we find ourselves depending on that more than on God and can get us to the point of going through the motions and losing our passion. His divine interruptions are a good way to spice up our relationships with Him, if we allow them to. They are blessings in disguise because they keep us focused on Him.

Lord, I pray that You help us to be flexible and yielded to Your plans and desires each day so that we can be sure that Your will is being done and that we are not missing divine appointments. I pray that we will look at every “interruption” You allow as a blessing in disguise and as an opportunity to be a blessing and to allow You to fulfill Your desires. I pray that we will live each day to hear the beautiful words, “Well done good and faithful servant.” Be glorified in Your people, God. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.”
