But just how much did He say? And, most importantly, was it in the context of winning souls to the kingdom.

It seems to me that if one knows how much God truly loves them that they will naturally turn to Him in times of trials and tribulation. Isn't that a natural instinct in all people to turn to someone we trust?
Even a tiny toddler displays this propensity in human nature. Who do they go to and cry for when they are hurt or in trouble, the mother that they know loves them.
If we don't naturally turn to God for help then we don't really know how much He cares for us.

Depending on the person, they could be very distrustful. So if they are fed the idea that when you become a Christian everything will be sunshine and roses, and suddenly they start going through trials they will be come disillusioned at the very least. They will wonder why God is angry at them.

This happens all the time with new Christians, which is why there are people who say they were a Christian then become agnostic or atheist.
 
The question was not Does Jesus speak more to heaven or hell? the question was down the lines of where does the fear come from...it comes from the Word...
I believe simply both have a place... depending on the hearer...

Jesus loves you Yes He sure does... end of story? no. unless one believes in universalism .

Are all these comments since then all pointed at Joel Osteen?
You are all making him sound like the devil himself.

I agree.There are other reasons why people turn away from God but that is a very common one.
 
I'm not as practiced at chasing rabbits as some here seem to be. All I have been trying to drive home is that Jesus did NOT try to convert with the preaching of the fear of hell. None, nada, nunca, never, nein.

And the article was nothing more than an answer to Kathi's final comment in post # 100.

But that's not what Joel teaches at all. Read the quotes that I posted of what he says about trials I think too many of us may have just believed what we heard. And some it's that they don't like the prosperity that he also teaches but that's far from teaching ALL bad things. This thread as made me take a closer look at what he does teach and much of it is right from the Bible. He doesn't quote the scripture that the teaching is from and personally I think that's a mistake because people need to know where it is in God's Word and read it themselves. The scripture itself should be displayed at least on the big screen imo.

Not the devil, mind you, but as he is a pastor of a, reportedly, Christian church, we must be on guard to be sure he is preaching the full counsel of God, not just the nice and happy parts.
 
You guys do know, don't you, that Hell was not a part of the OT Jewish religion, in any way? They understood sin and judgment, but they knew nothing of this place we call Hell. That's why Jesus never mentioned Hell when trying to teach them of the kingdom of God.... it just didn't exist anywhere in their religion.

I don't know and neither do you if Jesus spoke about hell when he had his ministry.But hell is very plain in His word in the Bible.Hell is spoken of many,many times in the Bible so it was very important to God to get His word out and to warn us.

And we also have to be aware of what Gamaliel warned the Sanhedrin of...... They, too, were convinced the disciples were false teachers. (Acts 5:34)

The disciples were not false teachers and believe me I would not compare Osteen to one of the disciples. :neutral

That's how I think about it. Also do we really need to look at how many times the Bible mentions hell to know how severe it is?

And yet, the absolute BEST of the learned Scripture teachers and Religious Leaders who all also KNEW they were right, compared Jesus with the devil.

Just sayin'....... We may not know all we think we know.

I believe that everything Jesus preached that we need to know about living life for God is in the Bible that we have been given by God.
