Our Phillies were beating the Giants 8-2 when the Giants pitcher deliberately hit the Phillies batter with the ball. Both benches jumped into the ensuing fight, but they didn't fight each other. Everybody was trying to separate the pitcher and batter, who were on the ground pounding away at each other.
The Phillies went on to win 9-2.

Pur Phillies are 7 1/2 games in phirst place, but the BIG news is:
Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano allowed five home runs last night before deliberately throwing the ball at the batter. Ejected from the game, he cleaned out his locker and announced that he is retiring. An hour after the game was over, the Cubs announced: "We will respect his wishes."
With he Cubs in next-to-last place, I don't think anybody will miss him. Will you?

My last thread dealt with Carlos Zambrano, the Chicago Cubs pitcher who quit the team in a rage after being ejected from a game. He wanted to return the next day, but the Cubs suspended him for thirty days. They announced this week that after he returns, he will sit on the bench for the rest of the season.

The Fillies are a good team and might continue to win until they run into Tim Wakefield and the Boston Red Sox.

Stepping over to football for a moment, I'd like to present Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith and Falcons player Dunta Robinson with the "Sports Jerks of the Week" award.
It's hard to believe that anyone could be a bigger jerk than Dunta Robinson, who deliberately rammed a Philadelphia Eagles player with his helmet and got a fine. But Falcons coach Mike Smith has what it takes, telling reporters "That's the way we teach it."
