Bible Study Hebrew Names Connected to Jehovah

There is much profit in studying the Hebrew names connected to Jehovah, what they mean, and how they applied to the individuals bearing those names. Please search them out and add them to this thread. They all end in "-iah" (KJV) or "Yah".

We could begin with Isaiah (Strong's 3470). The Hebrew name is Yeshayah (yesh-ah-yow), and literally means "Jah has saved" hence "salvation of Jehovah". When you study the prophecy of Isaiah, that is precisely what you find. It is primarily about Christ -- Yeshua -- God is [our] Salvation, even though there are several prophecies pertaining to judgment. The Ethiopian eunuch was reading the Isaiah scroll and was saved through the ministry of Philip the evangelist (Acts 8:26-40). The Isaiah scroll dating from around 200 BC was found among the Dead Sea Scrolls and was almost identical to that of the Masoretic Text from 900 AD. No coincidence.

I guess the first thing a person would profit by in studying the name of Jehovah, is realizing this name does not exist in Hebrew, and that the Jews consider this a perverted name, or the Name of the Lord which is YHWH.

There are no J's in the Hebrew language.

Webster's Collegiate Dictionary:

“Jehovah — False reading of the Hebrew YAHWEH.”
(“Jehovah,” Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, 1973 ed.)

Encyclopedia Americana:

“Jehovah — erroneous form of the name of the G-d of Israel.”
(Encyclopedia Americana, vol. 16., 1972 ed.)

Encyclopedia Britannica:

“The Masoretes who from the 6th to the 10th century worked to reproduce the original text of the Hebrew Bible replaced the vowels of the name YHWH with the vowel signs of Adonai or Elohim. Thus the artificial name Jehovah came into being.”
(“Yahweh,” The New Encyclopedia Britannica, vol. 12, 1993 ed.)

The Jewish Encyclopedia:

“Jehovah — a mispronunciation of the Hebrew YHWH the name of G-d. This pronunciation is grammatically impossible.”
(“Jehovah,” The Jewish Encyclopedia, vol. 7, 1904 ed.)

The New Jewish Encyclopedia:

“It is clear that the word Jehovah is an artificial composite.”
(“Jehovah,” The New Jewish Encyclopedia, 1962 ed.)

The Jewish Encyclopedia states that YHWH is "the distinctive personal name of the God of Israel", and describes the form "Jehovah" as "a philological impossibility".

Jehovah is a compound word

A compound word is two words together to form one word.

Example: halleluyah – to praise the lord in song

Strong’s # 3470 - Isaiah - Yĕsha`yah - from (03467) and (03050)

(03467) - yasha`- to save, be saved, be delivered

(03050) = yah - lord

Yĕsha`yah - the compound word means: the lord is deliverer [savior]

Let’s look at the other part of the compound word “Jehovah”.

Yah - strong’s number 3050

The other part of this compound word is:

Hovah Strong’s number 1943
  1. ruin, disaster
Another form for 1943 is:

havvah Strong’s number 1942

  1. desire
    1. desire (in bad sense)
  2. chasm (fig. of destruction)
    1. engulfing ruin, destruction, calamity
KJV (15) - calamity, 4; iniquity, 1; mischief, 1; mischievous, 1; naughtiness, 1; naughty, 1; noisome, 1; perverse thing, 1; substance, 1; wickedness, 3;

# 1942 is from the word - hava'

  1. to fall

Hoveh on the other hand means: 1st person, male, present tense - to be i.e. I AM - though written with a double vav

In modern Hebrew grammar this matter is so serious and important, that the verb ‘to be’ (‘I am’) is not used in the present tense at all!

Usage of the Hebrew verb ‘HOVEH’ (I am) would imply referring to oneself as being the Almighty!

Jehovah is as valid as Yehovah or Yahweh or YHWH or LORD. No need to try and derail this thread by disputing what is already an established usage. It is certainly not a "perverted name" as you have alleged. That is totally unacceptable and disrespectful.

Established by who?

No one that actually understands Hebrew.

What is disrespectful is calling the Lord, by a name that isn't Valid.

Jesus is the name is the Lord.

YHWH is the name of the Lord.

Jesus is YHWH.

Jesus is the name above every name.

sheesh. I don't even like the use of that Name but its a Germanic attempt of saying the YHWH with vowels. if you said YHWH with the vowels of ADONAI you would get JEHOVAH. silly me. YAHWEH is also good. carry on

Since all we have at present is more derailing of the thread here's something that should suffice. It is interesting that no one could provide another Hebrew name connected to Jehovah.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is about the word Jehovah. For the deity, see God in Abrahamic religions. For other uses, see Jehovah (disambiguation).

"Jehovah" at Exodus 6:3
(1611 King James Version)

Jehovah (/dʒɨˈhoʊvə/ jə-HOH-və) is a Latinization of the Hebrew יְהֹוָה, one vocalization of the Tetragrammaton יהוה (YHWH), the proper name of the God of Israel in the Hebrew Bible. This vocalization has been transliterated as "Yehowah",[1] while YHWH itself has been transliterated as "Yahweh".[2]
יְהֹוָה appears 6,518 times in the traditional Masoretic Text, in addition to 305 instances of יֱהֹוִה (Jehovih).[3] The earliest available Latin text to use a vocalization similar to Jehovah dates from the 13th century.[4]
Most scholars believe "Jehovah" to be a late (c. 1100 CE) hybrid form derived by combining the Latin letters JHVH with the vowels of Adonai, but there is some evidence that it may already have been in use in Late Antiquity (5th century).[5][6] The consensus among scholars is that the historical vocalization of the Tetragrammaton at the time of the redaction of the Torah (6th century BCE) is most likely Yahweh, however there is disagreement. The historical vocalization was lost because in Second Temple Judaism, during the 3rd to 2nd centuries BCE, the pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton came to be avoided, being substituted with Adonai ("my Lord").
"Jehovah" was popularized in the English-speaking world by William Tyndale and other pioneer English Protestant translators,[7] but is no longer used in mainstream English translations, with Lord or LORD used instead, generally indicating that the corresponding Hebrew is Yahweh or YHWH.[8][9]:5

Sorry Malachi, for being a part of the derailing, you are quite right. Here's another name...

YAHWEH-RAPHA: "The Lord Who Heals" (Exodus 15:26) – “I am Jehovah who heals you” both in body and soul. In body, by preserving from and curing diseases, and in soul, by pardoning iniquities.

Who decided to add letters to YHWH.

Joshua = Yĕhowshuwa`- Strong’s Number: 3091

“YHWH is salvation” = the Lord is salvation

If you need to add some letters to YHWH add these-

YHWH = YeHoWsHuwa = Jesus

In post #2 you wrote: "There are no J's in the Hebrew language."

Therefore, "Jesus" is not the name of the Lord. It is Yeshua.

Jesus is the English name for the Hebrew Yeshua.

Yahweh Yireh - Yahweh has seen; Yahweh will see; Yahweh will provide.

This name was used by Abraham which suggests the translation of Exodus 6:3 is either incorrect or should be understood differently.

Exo 6:3 And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them. KJV

The following translation harmonizes with Scripture:

Exo 6:3 And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name YHWH was I not known to them?
Or, the phrase "was I not known to them" can be understood to mean they did not fully understand all that the name YHWH meant.

Jesus is the English name for the Hebrew Yeshua.

Is "Jehovah" then the English name for YHWH?

You quoted several references coming against the name "Jehovah".

What if we just tweak them a little?

“Jehovah — False reading of the Hebrew YAHWEH.”
"Jesus - False reading of the Hebrew Yeshua."

“Jehovah — erroneous form of the name of the G-d of Israel.”
"Jesus - erroneous form of the name of the Son of the G-d of Israel."

The Hebrew name for the Lord is YHWH.

Jesus is the name above every name.

If you choose to Blaspheme the name of the Son of God, then that's between you and Him.

Greetings Malachi,
You probably already know this but I will write it for those who do not know. The OT Scriptures reveal God by nine different names. Three of them are Primary and six are compound. His names are progressive in showing personality, character, and His attributes.. The first use of LORD is when He begins to deal with man.(Gen. 2:4)

If you are referring to YHWH, Elohim, and Adonai as the three primary names, Elohim and Adonai are titles. YHWH (Yahweh) is His primary name.
