No. I do not think that.

That's a start.

So if a person who is under grace, does at some point, choose to present themselves as a slave to obey sin, and becomes a slave again to sin, and continues in this lifestyle without ever coming back [see prodigal son], will they receive eternal life or death?

What exactly do you believe about this condition?

JLB

No. I do not think that.

Why did you ask me a question then turn right around and answer it for me, incorrectly?

And more importantly, to my point, why did you say Christians can become "slaves to sin" when Paul says that sin will not be master over you?

Romans 6:14 (LEB) For sin will not be master over you, because you are not under law, but under grace.

[edit, staff]

12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. Romans 6:12-19

Paul is teaching them how to keep sin from from becoming their master again, by presenting themselves as a slave to God, and His righteousness, rather than presenting themselves as a slave to sin.

For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

Here is what the Lord warned Cain.

6 So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”
Genesis 4:6-7

Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?
For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

...so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness... Why?

Because, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?

It's up to each Christian to choose, whether to become a slave to sin leading to death, or of obedience unto righteousness.
It's understandable why this is a common understanding of Romans 6:16, but I believe Scripture never teaches the concept, for to be in sin (slave to sin leading to death) would mean not to be in Christ because those in Christ (born again) "shall not" be dominated by the sin nature (Rom 6:14), which answers to being "dead to sin" (Rom 6:2) and "dead in Christ" (Col 2:20), which all occurs at rebirth, and the lifestyle of the saint will manifest this more all the time during the progression of our maturity in "the image of Christ" (Rom 8:19; 2Cor 3:18).

I believe the exhortation to "let not sin reign in your mortal body" (Rom 6:14) is not in the sense of admonishing or warning one to avoid doing something but describing an example of something that one born again would not do, otherwise this would conflict and frustrate (contradict) the truth that God "works" (Phl 2:13) in all who are born again. Thus to me this exhortation (as all seemingly admonishment are to me) is another means of identification (Mat 7:16, 20) concerning those who are not in Christ, who are continuing to allow sin's rule.

So if a person who is under grace, does at some point, choose to present themselves as a slave to obey sin, and becomes a slave again to sin ...
What exactly do you believe about this condition?
I believe your 'condition' stated above is a made-up, hypothetical 'condition' that is in fact clearly contrary to what Paul taught about a person who is under grace.

Speaking to and about a person who is under grace, Paul says:
Rom 6:14 (LEB) For sin will not be master over you, because you are not under law, but under grace.
I believe Paul meant what he said, and said what he meant. Sin will NOT be master over you who are under grace. Straightforward and Biblical. Yet your idea about a person who is under grace becoming 'a slave again to sin' is directly contradictory to Paul's teaching in verse 6:14. All context in/around verse 14 included in my analysis.

I haven't ignored the surrounding context. That's how I know that none of it says that a person who is under grace becomes a slave to sin again.

I have noticed that you only quote and talk about Romans 6:14, which is how I have come to the conclusion that you ignore the surrounding context.

God did not create mankind with the idea of sin being in dominion, or ruling as a master over man.

6 So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Genesis 4:6-7

This is the principle Paul is teaching the Roman Christians, many of whom were slaves or freedmen [former slaves], appealing to their "slave" mind set in a way they could understand.

16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? Romans 6:12-16

Paul plainly tells the Christians to "not let sin reign in your mortal body".

That is a choice they had to make.

Paul plainly teaches them "so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness".

This is a choice they had to make, if they didn't want to live in bondage as a slave to sin.

19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. Romans 6:19

Paul teaches us we have authority, to crucify the flesh, to put to death the deeds of the flesh, but that we have to willing make the choice to do these things.

We have the choice to walk according the Spirit, or walk according to the flesh.

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1

and again

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16

Paul warned us that those who walk according to the flesh, and practice the works of the flesh, will not inherit the kingdom of God.

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:19-21

Do you believe that Christians are free to live sinful lives, and to practice the works of the flesh, with no consequences?

Here are some scriptures for you to consider:

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:19-21

Paul's admonition to the Corinthians:

9 I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. 10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person. 12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? 13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person.” 1 Corinthians 5:9-13

9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

To the Romans:

5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds”:7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, Romans 2:5-8

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Romans 8:12-13

James says it this way:

12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. James 1:12-15

Peter:

20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,” and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.” 2 Peter 2:20-22

Upon hearing the word of Jesus Christ and believing the one who sent Him.

John 5:24 (LEB) Truly, truly I say to you that the one who hears my word and who believes the one who sent me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

John 6:47 (LEB) Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes has eternal life.

Those who profess to be born again and live in sin have not been born again!
That eliminates everybody from salvation then. Ignorance is no excuse, it is still sin.

If I am wrong about eternal security and am misrepresenting His word............I am living in sin.

If people are wrong about loss of salvation and misrepresenting His word......they are living in sin.

Everybody is fruit inspecting a persons lifestyle and overt actions........When it is the mental attitude that we habitually sin in. Worry is a sin. How many people live a life of worry? the majority. Guilt is a sin. How many live a life of guilt? The majority.

While the world has the majority of believers scrutinizing overt actions and lifestyle.......God scrutinizes what we are THINKING and our MOTIVES. I will at least be honest with myself, I live in sin. I still get angry, frustrated, mull over things I KNOW I should not, I worry, I feel guilty.........And I KNOW I am saved.

And your statement above is all subjective. To "live in sin" is going to be a different opinion and how many times a day ,week or year does it take to be a "lifestyle of sin?"

The living in sin I'm referring to is willful sin, e.g. sinning intentionally. If one is sharing what they believe to be true but is not true, this is not presumptuous sin (i.e. Num 15:30).

Those who profess to be born again and live in sin have not been born again!

Please provide the scriptures that teach us those who profess to be born again, and live in sin, have not been born again.

Just because a person is born again, doesn't mean they automatically know how to walk in the Spirit, or crucify the flesh, or put to death the deeds of the flesh so that they may live.

Those who have been born again, and filled with God's Spirit, then later fall into sexual immorality and live in an adulterous relationship for years, and never repent and are never caught, then get killed in a car accident...

Brother this kind of thing happens all the time in the Church.

The ugly truth is this happens among Church leadership, as well.

In all these scriptures I presented to you, to examine, can you point out the language in any of them that indicate Paul taught these people were not born again, that these warnings were to people of the world?

9 I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. 10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person. 12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Paul plainly says that he does not judge those who are outside the Church... For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside?

In all these passages, Paul is warning Christians, that if the live an unrighteous immoral lifestyle, they will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Will not inherit the kingdom of God!!!

Do you understand what this phrase, "will not inherit the kingdom of God", means?

9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. I have noticed that you only quote and talk about Romans 6:14, which is how I have come to the conclusion that you ignore the surrounding context.
Well no wonder you have come to a wrong conclusion about me ignoring the surrounding context then. It's demonstrably untrue that I've only quoted and talked about Romans 6:14. I quoted/talked about other Scripture in posts 2,5,8,20,26,29,30 and 36 in this thread. Including the one where you first accused me of 'ignoring the surrounding context' around verse 14.

why did you say Christians can become "slaves to sin" when Paul says that sin will not be master over you?

Romans 6:14 (LEB) For sin will not be master over you, because you are not under law, but under grace.
I have noticed that you avoid answering the tough questions (re-posted above) that I and others ask you about your view(s) that seem to differ from Scripture(s) like you did in replying to my post #26 by simply accusing people of 'ignoring the surrounding context' as if that's an answer to the original question. It's not an answer. I have come to the conclusion that you are ignoring answering these tough questions about your view(s) by simply accusing people of 'ignoring the context' when you make those erroneous claims.

Paul plainly tells the Christians to "not let sin reign in your mortal body".
Yes he does. I have NOT ignored this fact, nor does it answer the question I asked you.

And you know what else he told them, he told them to; "present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead" then said "For sin will not be master over you because you are ... under grace".

Paul teaches us we have authority, to crucify the flesh, to put to death the deeds of the flesh,
Where? I'd say Paul teaches us that it is precisely God (through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit) who has that authority to crucify the flesh and to put to death the deeds of the flesh. We are simply under God's Grace if we have presented ourselves to God as being alive from the dead. That's substantially different than us having the authority to crucify the flesh. Some people just like taking credit for things they really aren't doing.

Romans 13:1 (LEB) Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except by God,

Romans 13:1 (LEB) Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except by God,

We have been given the power and authority over the devil, and sin, to crucify the flesh, and to keep ourselves from sin.

We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. 1 John 5:18

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Romans 8:12-13

It is through the active choice of the believer, who has been given all things that pertain to life and godliness, to either live according to the flesh, by gratifying it's sinful desires, or live according to the Spirit in obedience by crucifying the flesh.

2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 2 Peter 1:2-4

And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:24

16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16

  • It's the active choice of the believer to crucify the flesh, and to walk in the Spirit, rather than walk after the desires of the flesh, by practicing it's works, which are as follows:

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

That's the inherent problem with bolding and coloring a portion of a verse as if it's more important than what's left un-highlighted.

Why not highlight "whoever is born of God" in 1 John 5:18??? To me, John is giving the credit to God for keeping the wicked one from touching that person. Not the person himself. If we could do it without God, there'd be no need for Christ and the Holy Spirit.

Same for Romans 8:12-13. Why not highlight in red "we are debtors" and "by the spirit"??? Paul is giving credit and authority to God, not the person.

God did not create mankind with the idea of sin being in dominion, or ruling as a master over man.
God created mankind with the idea of glorifying The Son (the Redeemer of man) in mind.

Job 19:25-26 (LEB) But I myself know that my redeemer is alive, and at the last he will stand up upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, but from my flesh I will see God,

Isaiah 43:25 (LEB) I, I am the one who blots out your transgressions for my sake, and I will not remember your sins.

Galatians 3:13-14 (LEB) Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, because it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,” in order that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Romans 3:22-26 (LEB) that is, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. For there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by his grace, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, whom God made publicly available as the mercy seat through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness, because of the passing over of previously committed sins, in the forbearance of God, for the demonstration of his righteousness in the present time, so that he should be just and the one who justifies the person by faith in Jesus.

It's the righteousness of God to all who believe, not the righteousness of the believer to God that matters. Even a believer's righteousness falls short of the glory of God.
It's the gift of God's Grace, not the sinlessness of the believer that matters.
It's His blood, not our lack of sin (as if we could have a lack of sin) that matters.
God is the one who is just and who justifies the person of faith, not the person of faith who justifies himself by sinning only a little versus a lot.

God created mankind with the idea of glorifying The Son (the Redeemer of man) in mind.

The way mankind glorify's God is to display the righteousness of God through their lives.

6 So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Genesis 4:6-7

We were made to rule over sin, not sin ruling as a master over us.

Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? Romans 6:16

Jesus Christ came to restore this position of God given dominion to mankind, that was lost in the garden.

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion... Genesis 1:26

Christians who live immoral lives, do not glorify God.

Here is what Paul commanded concerning, Christians who live immoral lives.

1 Corinthians 5:9-11

Here is the warning for Christians who live immoral lives.
