hello wondering, dirtfarmer here

What scripture states that we have the ability to abandon God? I find that the "saint", that still sins from time to time, can leave the fellowship of God, but never have I found where we have the power to break or abandon, revert back, to the "old man" that was crucified with Christ.
Hi Dirtfarmer,
Nathan replied well in post no. 2103.

I'd have to say that when someone asks what scripture states that we have the ability to abandon God, it makes me wonder if they pay attention to detail when reading.

For instance, could you read ...
Colossians 1:21-23
Colossians 1:23

and

Hebrews 3:12-14
Hebrews 3:14

Do you see the word IF in both readings?
What does this word IF refer to, or what does it mean to YOU?

It seems to me to be a very important little word.
It puts a condition on what came before.
What do you think?

OK no bread, maybe, but No desert could be considered a pasquinade.
You sent me running to my dictionary.

I was hoping that you didn't really mean there would be no dessert. I don't think you would "KID AROUND" about dessert, especially about "tiramisu".

LOL
I LOVE tiramisu'.
And I make the best I've ever tasted.
Confirmed by all who taste it.

Do you know what tiramisu' means?

Colossians 1:23, " If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel"
This is a union of the branch to the vine. Supported and nourished by the vine, and not like a union of ivy, where the ivy has it own roots and merely clings to a tree and climbs upon it. Salvation is not dependent on the perseverance, but the perseverance on the salvation. Kept by the power of God.

Hebrews 3:14, "For we are made partakers of Christ , if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end."
Where at first there is great ardor, zeal, and confidence, but it soon dies, then it is clear they had no real attachment to Christ. Not some one
who is deceived and lost their faith in Christ.

The true believer is calm, but can sometimes can suffer from nervousness and be shy. Similar to a child that hides behind his mother when strangers are around. He is never noisy in his profession, nor does he clamor in zeal, blaming others for their lukewarmness. The believer endures even if there is evidence turbulence, but bears up under trials, persecution, and opposition from others.

It seems like you talk about everything but what the verse actually says.

To what does the IF refer?:

Colossiand 1:19 God Father willed that all goodness dwell in Jesus; that He might be the One to hold together the universe and all that is in it.
verse 20: It is through Christ's blood that Father reconciles all things to Himself, both in the heavens and on earth. Nature itself is reconciled to God as much as possible, as is man, till the coming of the new earth.

verse 21. We were alienated from God before the cross. We were hostile and mad at Him or considered Him not, and we engaged in evil deeds.

verse 22: Now Jesus, having died bodily, a physical death, has reconciled us to God Father, so that we may appear holy in the sight of God.

verse 23:
IF indeed we CONTINUE IN THE FAITH, firmly established and STEADFAST, and NOT MOVED.

If Paul says that we need to continue in the faith, it means that it's possible that maybe we MAY NOT continue in the faith.

What vine? What branch? Paul is plainly saying that IF we do verse 23, we will have verses 19-22. Simple.

vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

Hebrews 3:14

verse 12: Paul (?) is speaking to the brethern, to believers. He's warning them about not having an unbelieving heart. This will make them fall away from the living God. IOW, it's possible to believe, but then NOT believe, and to guard against this.

verse 13: We are to encourage each other so that we may not become hardened by sin. IF we are eternally saved when belileving ONE TIME, why would Paul exhort us in this way? Because if our heart becomes hard through sin, it means we may lose our salvation. Only for such an important reason would Jesus, Paul, Peter, James, all all the writers, beg us to HOLD FIRM TILL THE END.

verse 14: We are PARTAKERS, sharing IN CHRIST and His finished work, IF WE HOLD FAST what we FIRST BELIEVED until the end. We are told to CONTINUE believing.

This sounds simple and clear and understandable to anyone.

YOUR last paragraph does not even make too much sense to me. I don't even grasp what you're trying to say.
The bible CANNOT BE THIS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND.

It must be taken at face value. Nothing added to what we read.
Simple to understand even for an uneducated person.

1 John 2:15-24 [NASB]
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
18 Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that [fn]it would be shown that they all are not of us. 20 [fn]But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and [fn]because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the [fn]Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.

"They" vs "Us" vs "You" seems like a big deal that is often overlooked in these discussions of the warnings.

I have exhausted my little "pea brain" in trying to explain more clearly how I see those verses, but it is to no avail. As I have stated to others that our views can't be reconciled. we will have to agree to disagree.

What is important is that we both can agree that Christ died to pay our sin debt. We will converse on many more subjects, some we will agree and some we will disagree.

As to tiramisu, I eat it for dessert every time I go to an Italian restaurant. Just because I go "barefooted" most of the time, I do wear sandals when I get "all fancied up". I have learned to study about different cultures. I used to be a real "country bumpkin". When I was about 16, I tried pizza pie for dessert. That was a long time ago and taught me "to look before I leaped".

It is NOT overlooked.
We weren't discussing 1 John 2:15-24.

It's very important to know who is being discussed, who is making the statement, what happened just before and after, and why the statement is being made.

You picked to post what suited you.
The posts dirtfarmer and I were discussing is about believers.

WHO CONTINUES in the faith? NON-believers?
Colossians 1:19-23

WHO can fall away? NON-believers?
Hebrews 3:14

Hi Dirtfarmer,

We both exhausted our pea brains.
I just like to read a few verses and take them at face value. This seems to me to be the best way of understanding scripture.
When we have to start explaining it, things get complicated and do not remain "pure".

I mostly post for those reading along.

It's nice to hear that you wear sandals every now and then. It's good to keep in practice. I believe Jesus wore sandals too.
Remember when you eat tiramisu' that the only ingredients in there should be:
Pavesini cookies
Espresso coffee
Mascarpone cheese
Whipped heavy cream
Egg yolks
Sugar
Chocolate powder

Anything added to the above, such as liquor, dry fruit, etc. is both illegal and immoral.
Please report the name of the restaurant that breaks this law.

hello wondering, dirtfarmer here

I only eat tiramisu, I have never tried to make it, but if I do I will use only those ingredients. I have never liked looking through bars.

That was my question and my only point.

Is there a difference between those who read it and obey and those who read it and do not obey?
Was he speaking to one group or two? (We, You or They)
Verse 24 is talking about "you". The ones who abide. Saying if what they heard abides in them, then they will abide in the Son and Father.

Simple reasoning states if they don't abide in what they heard, then they won't abide in the Son and Father.

Is it more complicated than that?

I deliberately quoted verses 15-24 and underlined verse 19.
I think there are questions avoided in the "everyone chooses to be saved and can choose to be unsaved" focus on the warnings in scripture, vs. the "no one chooses to be saved or can choose to be unsaved" focus on the assurances in scripture.

So, the short answer is "Yes."
I believe the matter is more complicated than 'that', but have no desire to argue shadows and play scripture pong.
I quoted a paragraph for a reason.
I have no desire to debate single verses out of context (or in context) to retread a 2100+ post well worn path.
You will either see the point, or you will not.
You will either care about the point, or you will not.
That is the beauty of Calvinism ... I am not your mother.
